Came back to my apartment in Jersey City and saw a Virgin 747 coming from the direction of the Freedom tower, putting gear down and then turning final to 22L at EWR. I have never, in all my time here, seen that before. A BA777 did the same thing a few minutes later.
Here's the Flightaware track for the 747: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/VIR1
Is this necessary when storms are coming from the west? What were LGA and JFK doing at the same time??

I saw the same two planes from Astoria. Thought it was a little odd. One of my teammates even mentioned it too me.

I was on the west side of Manhattan and saw the same 2 planes as well. The tenant of apt on W 54 St also said he rarely sees that happen.

There were so many planes in holding patterns over Jersey it isn't even funny. Bet that had something to do with it.

Certainly abnormal. But with teh weather coming through, a lot of the standard approaches can go out the window and they'll vector planes in as they can.
There were certainly some odd approaches last night. This FDX came out of a holding pattern over my house, then proceeded to mimic the western border of NJ :)

when the storms are brewing it gets crazy, we once held 3 times on the way into JFK on a bad day(Tstorms) in the 727 back in '03, the only joy was the sight of the Concorde 1k beneath us at 10,000 during our last hold at CAMRN,such a beautiful, beautiful, ship.
