Get in on this guys, this is not just some boring set up a tripod and fire type of thing. This is in event where the field is almost completely dead quiet and the warbirds almost seem to whisper their history to you. Anyone who doesn't submit is truly missing out. HUTS is a can't miss.

Billbo1970

I would love to submit, but photography is just a hobby for me & I am not published... I also have no experience with night shots, so don't have any to submit :(

You can always take 3 night shots tonight and see what happens... you have to enter to be in it, aviation shots are good but if you shoot only daytime shots, any night shot may get you in this year. -Fred

Does anybody know the event that goes on at the museum prior to the HUTS shoot on Sat night. Is that event open to the Public? I recall seeing an ad for it but can not seem to find it now. Museum site does not have it listed. If any one can post a link or any info it would be great. Thanks

Hey Everyone,
I'm just trying to field some more opinions on this:
Do you guys think the Nikon 18-200 & Tokina 12-24 are ok to use for an event like this?
Or do you guys think I should rent something a like the Nikon 24-70 F2.8 to replace the 18-200 for a night shoot (less flare and better sharpness but I'd still be shooting at F8)?
Last time I had a Tamron 24-70, but I have since sold it :-(

Tokina 12-24 is an awesome lens. For the statics, it can't be beat. If you want some reach or extra close up, get the longer zoom.

I suggest a wide lens (14-24mm) and a zoom (70-300mm or 70-200mm) lens. Don't forget your tripod, flash and a shutter release cable or remote.

Also worth knowing is your sensor's diffraction limits and stick with the sweet spot apertures. We must always make decisions based on creativity which puts us in bad quality land... but you should always try and stay within the sensor's limits for maximum sharpness. Long exposures are the truest test of a quality system and best technique. Here is a very technical and educational article on the subject :)

That was an excellent read, thanks Manny. Interesting to see that my crop body has a different limit than my full frame. My only question is that, I don't seem to recall discussions about diffraction when shooting film. Was there a film version of this phenomenon?

Fortunately or unfortunately film was a chemical process, not a mathematical/mechanical one. There was no Bayer array, no demosaicing algorithms, no Photo Cells, no microlenses, etc. Film was much more chaotic in nature and each site could handle each color and they were micron sized "pixels" per se so it behaved a lot differently. Nevertheless, there was a limit, but probably extremely high given that the resolution of film was surpassed by 12MP sensors in my opinion.

I believe either Berger Bros. or Cameta, both in Amityville rent lenses. One of them does, the one further away from the tracks. They advertise it on their site, or at least they used to. I have rented from Lens Rentals in the past before purchasing my 100 - 400, they had decent rates, much better than the local guys.

Re: Cameta and Berger Bros. They will rent you equipment, but they immediately put a hold on your charge card for the cost of the lens. They remove it when you return the lens. The on line sites do not do that.

Fred, you are always a tireless advocate and representative for the Museum, the Night Event and all things AAM/Photography related. During the Jones BEach Airshow Weekend you literally pour your whole life into it for at least two solid weeks end to end (not to mention all the other work that builds up to it)

I can't imagine doing half of it myself for no other compensation than satisfaction. So, don't ever apologize and really, THANK YOU, even though it will never be enough to just say that. All I hope I can do is show appreciation at least through my photography at the event.

Cheers!

I can't imagine doing half of it myself for no other compensation than satisfaction. So, don't ever apologize and really, THANK YOU, even though it will never be enough to just say that. All I hope I can do is show appreciation at least through my photography at the event.

Cheers!
Could not have said it better Manny. Fred, without your endless dedication, I'm sure the AAM wouldn't get the draw they do, and the spotter community would most certainly suffer. I can honestly say that even though I've never really picked your brain per se, I've learned a lot from you by just watching and I wouldn't be half the photographer I am now had I not met you.

Well stated Manny! Fred ... we don't know how you do it, but you always seem to get it done. Juggling so many things before, during and after the events. We all are grateful to you and the passion you have for aviation and photography. I am always blown aways with the images you post. I too have learned from you as well, by watching and listening. Thanks Fred for all you do!

Although one good way to get Fred frazzled during his cool-as-ice HUTS juggling, is to just bring in a Sherpa!! Fred's GONE!!!
