I have been trying to be in NY for UN for many years but I am committed this time around. How do the VIPs arrive usually? Meaning all at once on the weekend for Tuesday opening or gradually around the day they speak. I am going to camp at JFK Mon, Tue and Wed so I hope to see folks I haven't seen for some time. Let me know who can come out and any info on the arrivals.

It's kind of difficult to determine exactly when VIPs will arrive. They are scattered throughout the days (and even at night). You should have at most four opportunities to catch the aircraft. Once the VIP is dropped off the aircraft turn around quickly and head up to Stewart (upstate NY since JFK can't accomodate all the aircraft), and remain there until they need to return back to JFK. Hopefully, you will see some of us out spotting during UN Week. I plan on being out the 14th at JFK and the 15th at LGA (Kids Day). Unfortunately, I'll miss the bulk of arrivals since I'll be away the week of the 16-22 for business, but upon my return back I'll be out spotting from the 23rd on! I hope to catch some rare visitors. Bring a chair, for the mounds or Bayswater, standing all day will wear you out.

On another thread on the forum it states President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be attending the UN General Assembly. He may come in and leave quickly. One time he came in, it was on a 707.

Well, KU 744 has been around twice already and the Amiri A330 White/Silver Band was behind Triple Hangars last Tuesday so I wouldn't doubt some traffic on Sunday. But, I expect the bulk of the big guys next weekend, just prior to the main event on Tuesday.

My impression is that the "busier" weekend will be September 22-23, right? I plan to be at JFK on the Saturday for sure, and maybe the Sunday (my girlfriend has already consented to let me drag her out there, so I'm a go).

I was already planning on being out there that Sunday before I realized it was going to be just prior to UN week. Now I'm definitely planning on spending the full day. I might head over to SWF on Saturday to see if anything good comes in.

POTUS coming in Tuesday for a fundraiser with Jay Z. He also will speak on Sept 25 on the final day of Bill Clintons Global Initiative as will Romney. The 25th also is the day POTUS to speak at the UN. Not sure of arrival/departure days but he sometimes stays a few days here.

The purpose of this memorandum is to notify all tenants of a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) that will be in effect for the New York Area from Tuesday, September 18th through Friday,
September 28th, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. It is strongly recommended that pilot visit the FAA website and review the entire TFR and applicable NOTAMs before conducting flight operations during this period, as they are subject to change.
As a result of this TFR, special security procedures will be in effect at Republic Airport from Monday, September 24th through Tuesday, September 25th, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. Please note that the Main Terminal Ramp will be closed during this period to all unauthorized aircraft, vehicles and personnel.

I don't know who or what is coming in next Monday/Tuesday, but sounds like it might be a good day to not wander around FRG with a long lens? :wink:

In the past, they have used FRG - the main terminal ramp in particular - to pre-clear aircraft and helicopters entering the TFR around NYC. You'll see a variety of private aircraft/helicopters park on the ramp, and SCPD (and probably a few others from the security alphabet soup) will verify the crew/pax and inspect the aircraft. I doubt anyone would bother you - you might get a few looks if you are in the terminal parking lot, but not much else.

In anticipation of this coming weekend's potentially busy schedule, I have planned to come out both Saturday and Sunday. I talked to Nick, who said he'd be out as much as possible, and I presume the "usual" band of miscreants will show up as well.

Here's hoping for 31s or 22s, as I think it's a blast when there's a whole slew of us at Panera or the Mounds.

Just curious who has definitely alotted time to this weekend. I'll be dragging my girlfriend along (I haven't taken her spotting yet this year so she's willing to humor me all weekend).

Both A310's normally come for UN Week so I'm sure the second will be coming in the next day or two. The 707 is still in active service and I happened to I see it parked at MAD the other day. However I believe she is only being used for troop transport flights.

I'm pretty sore about how this last one turned out. He got off as early as a CRJ on a ferry flight and began his left bank almost immediately. I had walked as far east as I could on the HoBe sands to get it in what should have been great light. As it turned out, they of course went directly over my head. So this will have to do.

Great shots. Thanks for sharing guys. On Sunday, I spotted the South African Air Force and the Czech Republic Air Force at JFK near 31L just taxying. I believe they departed from 31L after 1400. I know that the Iranian president spoke at the UN yesterday saying gibberish. Does anybody know if he used the B747SP? I believe in the 70's, Iran had a daily SP flight to JFK at 1500 but by the time I started spotting, it no longer came.

Although it didn't land at JFK, I'm sure it has something to do with UN week.
At 18:00, Planefinder and Flight Radar 24 show an aircraft, call sign GOTO FMS approaching JFK from thw SE at 25,000, then turning SW as it reached just south of JFK. Plug in the reg 164386 at Airliners.net and you can see the aircraft. I also saw it with a pair of binoculars.

No mystery ..this is a NAVY electronic warfare aircraft and could have been overhead :-) We spotted an F-22 and an KC-10 way way up overhead... typical for UN Week in NY

The TACAMOs are in the air most days all up and down the East Coast. They're based out of Pax, and do lots of circling over Virginia, Maryland, the Mid-Atlantic, and so on.

With the exception of Argentina and Brazil, has anyone seen any of the South Americans? The Venezuela 319, Colombia BBJ, Ecuador 727, Chile 767, Peru 735, and even a Suriname 733 are all pretty regular visitors, but I haven't seen any of them reported so far.

You typed them out? I doubt it LOL. Anyway, the forum is designed to INTERPRET Hyperlinks. You should use the little toggle switch to view RAW text vs formatted to make sure. Or use the IMG widget... regardless, it was an easy fix... select the entire block of image text and hit the REMOVE HYPERLINK button! Voila!

The IMG tag worked is just that the forum interpreted the IMG url as a hyperlink and then you had (actually)

Excellent work. I am curious about the C&T Charter, N916SK. I tried to track the aircraft but it shows zero flights into JFK; interesting though it is from Havana. Maybe the Cuban delegation were aboard. Some of these aircraft are a mystery and we have nobody to ask to get confirmation. The JAL B744 with the old livery; what is its tail #? Haven't seen a JAL B744 for quite awhile. I've yet to see the aircraft of the Chinese or even the Taiwanese delegation.

It is indeed, recently re-registered to White Airways of Portugal to allow better access to the world. I was fortunate enough to photograph her in Lisbon when she was being re-registered. Apparently IAD ops has no ETD but they seem to think she won't be around much longer.

The Iranian 747 SP relocated to Andrews AFB for the duration of the Iranian stay here in the states. It may reposition back to NYC to depart for Home, I would keep my eyes open.

Just as I was making my way to HoBe from home, I have gotten two blocks away from home and I see the Yemenia 747 SP departing off RWY 31L. I darted out of my car to get this shot. There was a second Thai A340 there but unshootable to due to the way it was parked. Same story for a few uninteresting BBJ's and a tan ERJ-190. The 777 was also there but surrounded by ground equipment. I went up to SWF hoping to catch a VC-25A or some of the Saudi, UAE or Brunei stuff, but no luck.

I didn't get the Spanish A310--there was a gate guard at the fence and I didn't want to press my luck after already shooting the 727 and Senegal. Although I don't think he realized I was there...

Wish I had a camera with a telephoto lens but those days are over for me. I could never take the great photos posted here as I have no car but as a retiree; I got plenty of free time!

As usual, excellent shots. This is what makes spotting such a thrill; seeing these aircraft, some mysterious, arrive and depart un-scheduled. Thanks again for sharing with those who are unable. Seeing Iran Air B747SP must be like finding a rare coin in your change for a numismatist. Still awaiting word on the Australian aircraft and how can I get the tail #s on all these aircraft? They are impossible to see on most of the photos. Somebody please post the tail #s so we can search for the flights. Thanks so much!

Yup same here Speedbird. Used to have this great Pentax with an 85-210 Zoom back in the 80/90s. Loved that bad boy. Now I use a Canon PowerShot with a 4X zoom lens. Little
bugger fits right into my pocket and I'm good to go. Oh it doesnt take the beautiful, crystal clear in your face pictures the guys here take but thats fine by me. Love those pics but I love the
shots I take and I'm not looking to put them up on A.net, J.net or WTF.net!!! :tongue: You write about using a point and shoot do you have one of those or just a disposable? There are plenty on the market and are reasonably priced.

SWF provides a huge, cheap safe parking lot. Has a military RWY with beautiful scenery nearby :tongue: Across the river, you have some of the world's best food (The C.I.A. for one)
