With its move across Kennedy Airport this morning, Space Shuttle Enterprise has begun the final leg of its journey from the Smithsonian in Washington DC to the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum in New York, a leg which will take a few days.

Here's a full schedule:

On Saturday, June 2, beginning no earlier than 4 pm, Enterprise will be lifted by crane and placed onto the barge. Craning takes approximately three hours.

On Sunday, June 3, at 7:45 a.m., the barge carrying Enterprise will depart JFK, towed by a Weeks Marine tugboat, and will travel along the shore of Queens and Brooklyn, passing the Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge at 3:30 p.m.; Coney Island at 4:19 p.m.; and under the Verrazano Bridge at 5:34 p.m. before docking at Weeks Marine in Port Elizabeth, NJ at 6:00 p.m.

On Monday, June 4, the barge and shuttle will remain at Weeks Marine in Port Elizabeth, NJ.

On Tuesday, June 5, at 9:15 a.m., the barge and shuttle will leave Weeks Marine, passing the Statue of Liberty at 9:50 a.m.; the World Trade Center at 10:40 a.m.; and travel up the Hudson River, completing its journey at the Intrepid Museum at 11:30 a.m. where it will be lifted by crane onto the flight deck and put into position facing the Hudson River. Craning operation takes three hours.

Enterprise will be open to the public beginning July 19th.

Note: All times and dates are dependent on weather and tide conditions.

Message posted today by the Intrepid museum:

''All fans of space shuttle Enterprise will be happy to know that the NASA’s first space shuttle orbiter is bound for Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

After her ferry flight from Dulles to John F. Kennedy airport on April 27, 2012, space shuttle Enterprise will now employ yet another mode of transportation—barge—to complete her journey home and arrive safely in Manhattan.

The journey begins today when Enterprise, atop the trailer she was placed on after being de-mated from the NASA Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) 747, is rolled from her current location under the protective Radiant Aviation Hangar to a near-water location at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport. Tonight, preparations will be made to lift Enterprise by crane and place her on to the barge in the early afternoon on Saturday, June 2.

Enterprise fans from Coney Island to Clinton are invited to watch this modern marvel float from Jamaica Bay to New York Harbor. On Sunday, June 3rd the space shuttle is scheduled to depart John F. Kennedy airport at 7:45am and make its way around Brooklyn. Projected look out points include the Rockaways, Coney Island, Bay Ridge. The barge is set pass under the Verrazano Bridge around 5:30pm before it docks overnight in Bayonne, New Jersey. Here, crews will prepare space shuttle Enterprise for the second leg of her journey.

It is not until Tuesday, June 5th that Enterprise will continue up the Hudson River. She is scheduled to depart Bayonne at approximately 9:15am and sail past the Statue of Liberty and Freedom Tower before she reaches her final destination at Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.''

Which location would be better for photos, the west side waterfront or across the river in Jersey ?

On Monday, the Shuttle will be transferred to a different barge at the Bayonne Dry Dock. The problem is what time will this transfer take place ? Naturally, the weather looks unsettled this weekend and that could shake-up all the schedules.

They forgot to add "It'll cost you $50 per person to see that and the Concorde when you come to Intrepid."I'm done with my love affair with that museum. They used to give a charity I was associated with a good rate for a huge fundraiser for young professionals that used to raise over $200k every year. After the refit, the rate to use the ship suddenly more than doubled. Pathetic. They invested so much in getting the refit down its now being run purely from the bottom line point of view. They should lose their 501(c)(3) status as far as I'm concerned.

The Museum also got rid of the Iwo Jima flag-raising replica however they were the only NYC institution that wanted a Concorde to display. I attended a free Memorial Day service last week and even got seated and free bottles of water.

You should have a decent view from the pier next to Ikea in Red Hook. Lots of parking there.

Speedbird1

It will cost over $50 if you want to go aboard Concorde, tour the ship plus visit the Shuttle Pavilion. The Concorde Tour is a separate fee and so will the fee to see the Enterprise. Incidentally, I received an invitation several years ago to attend the Welcoming Ceremony for Concorde. When I tried to enter, I was told that I needed to pay the General Admission in order to see the ceremony. I managed to see it anyway but was humiliated for believing that I got a special invite. I realize that the Museum needs a large sum of contributions as they wish to build a permanent home for the Enterprise across 12th Ave. but why take advantage of loyal supporters?

There is confusion about where the Shuttle will be on Mon. June 4. The Intrepid site says it will be at Bayonne, NJ but other articles say she will be towed all the way over to Port Elizabeth. If true, she must be towed through the narrow Kill Van Kull and under the Bayonne Bridge west towards Port Elizabeth. If so, Staten Island would offer great viewing spots on Mon. Does anybody know where she will actually stay on Monday? Each spot is quite different. Bayonne or Pt. Elizabeth, that is the question? I'll take the ferry on Monday, weather permitting.

There is a huge parking lot near the pier where the Queen Mary 2 docks. However, it might only be opened when a cruise ship is in the dock. Go to the Port Authority website and search under ports facilities. They can help you I hope. I have no car so I must ride the bus.

We do know it is going to Weeks Marine. For some reason, Intrepid's schedule said Weeks is in Port Elizabeth, when it is actually on the Jersey City/Bayonne border. Some people probably consider it Bayonne, which is why some articles note it as such, but it is technically in Jersey City.

Is that the same place they brought US 1549 after they pulled it from the Hudson?

Pretty sure it is. I know it's the same company, can't say for sure that it's the same spot but most likely yes. Maybe some of the same boats will be used. Tom Turner probably knows.

So I'm guessing on Tuesday morning Battery park would be the best place to catch her passing by the statue of liberty on her way to Intrepid ?

Not sure if it's accessible since I haven't been there in a while, but there are some nice views from Fort Wades Worth in Staten Island at the foot of the Verrazano bridge as well as a nice view of lower Manhattan. I'll will try to get to the Cross Bay Bridge. Note: High tide is at 7:43am and Low tide is about 2:17pm tomorrow (Sunday, June 3rd).

Below is some additional information

Water cannons and fireboats will be part of the Enterprise's pass by the Statue of Liberty (this should be a great shot from Governors Island!).

SUNDAY
Pulled by a tugboat, the barge will travel along the shore of Queens and Brooklyn, passing the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge about 3:30 p.m. and Coney Island about 4:20. It should pass the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge about 5:35.
MONDAY
Enterprise will be parked at Weeks Marine Terminal in Jersey City, N.J., through the day, as final preparations are made.
TUESDAY
At 9:15 a.m., the shuttle will begin its journey through New York Harbor and up the Hudson River. It should pass the Statue of Liberty at 9:50 a.m. and the World Trade Center site at 10:40 a.m. It will complete its journey at the Intrepid museum at 11:30 a.m. A crane will lift the Enterprise onto the flight deck of the Intrepid at Pier 86 on 46th Street and 12th Avenue.

Matt I plan to get shots of it under the Hodges bridge, but, where the heck does one park around the Rockaway-side? Just on the road? If it's sunny that would be the side to shoot from at that time of the day

Weeks Marine cannot be located at Port Elizabeth as it's near Cape May,NJ. They must mean Elizabethport which is near the Dry Dock where the Intrepid was repaired. I'll ride the SI ferry on Monday and try to see where the barge is. Hopefully, the weather will hold.

Battery Park City esplanade is even better as I got a great view of the tall ships from SI and up the Hudson to Canal St. I can't see the barge at the other sites as I have no car so the Cross Bay Bridge/ Marine Pky Bridge would be difficult for me.

There's a Duane reade at the corner of beach116th st and beach channel drive in rockaway. The rockaway 911 memorial park is right next to it. You should be able to get some shots of it headed through the bay and headed towards the marine park bridge from there. There's also a parking lot for the federal park and the ferry from the Rockaways into the city on the Rockaways side of the marine park bridge, just west of the bridge itself. It should allow for some good photos, too. Sadly, while that's right by my apartment, I'm inmwestchester today. Would have been nice to meet some of you guys. Good luck!

I wish I was able to make it to the bridge and meet up with the rest of the gang, but unfortunately, I had another late afternoon family function. Here are a few from earlier this afternoon as the barge waited before it made its trek to the Cross Bay Memorial bridge. As always sir Manny it was a great pleasure shooting with you. By the way, who was that other guy next to us (oh yeah..........Jason!).

Took my family to "To the Struggle Against World Terrorism" Monument (also known as the Tear of Grief and the Tear Drop Memorial) at Bayonne to watch Space Shuttle Enterprise.
There was a storm just before Enterprise get into the Upper New York Bay. People had to get back into their cars for the heavy rain. We had a rainbow after the storm and I had my Galen Rowell moment by putting Enterprise and the rainbow in the same frame.

WOW... man those are terrific. I just got home (12:15am actually) and am just starting to download my cards. No way I will get to them properly this evening as I am dead tired.

Started at 5:45am this morning... met with Mark "Zee71" around 8:00 or 9:00am I guess and spotted for a bit from HoBe and ended up staying there for quite some time as Enterprise sat for the tides for a couple of hours ... Jason joined us and then we split up as Mark had a prior engagement.

Jason and I then met with Eric and his Brother at the Cross Bay Bridge and we stayed there until she passed under us. We all left the bridge in a hurry, got in our cars and drove south to Breezy Point / Fort Tilden to the Ferry Terminal next to Gil Hodges Bridge... there we met up with Moose.

From here Jason and Eric dropped out while Moose and I headed to Ft Hamilton in SI where we met up with Cary. After this we headed to NJ to the Weeks Marine termianl and finished the evening there an hour or so ago.

The people turned out in much higher numbers that I expected. Perhaps larger crowds than the arrival via the SCA.

As Manny said, we headed to Fort Wadsworth, and met up with Cary. Here is the shuttle coming under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. About 15 seconds after this shot, an outbound cruise ship passed in front of the shuttle, blocking our view for a short time.

http://www.moose135photography.com/Airplanes/Space-Shuttle-Enterprise/i-HdKCfTD/0/XL/JM20120603Enterprise003-XL.jpg

After leaving Fort Wadsworth, the three of us headed to the Weeks Marine facility in Bayonne. Ultimately, they docked the shuttle in the same spot that US 1549 was after being pulled from the Hudson.

Are the roads across from the Weeks Marina public streets?

Also, here are my pics from yesterday: http://www.flickr.com/photos/grink/sets/72157630035185266/

Yes they are. It's part of the marine terminal, but the street is open to the public, with parking directly across from the shuttle. From Rt 440, look for Pulaski Street which takes you to Port Jersey Blvd. Google Maps shows the location as 202 Port Jersey Blvd, Jersey City, NJ 07305 but your GPS may vary.

Use these coordinates in Google Maps to view the location and check directions.

Tuesday's move to the Intrepid has been postponed due to weather...

http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/LatestNews/june-2012/JUNE-5-JOURNEY-OF-SPACE-SHUTTLE-ENTERPRISE-TO-INTR.aspx

The planned final leg of the journey of Space Shuttle Enterprise to its new home at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum has been postponed due to inclement weather which is delaying the prep work necessary to ferry and crane the shuttle to its final destination.

A new moving date has been tentatively set for Wednesday, June 6. As with all the phases of transport for the Enterprise, all moves are based on weather and tidal conditions and will be adjusted if conditions warrant. Intrepid will continue to monitor the forecast.

Enterprise will remain at Weeks Marine in New Jersey until it is brought up the Hudson River and craned onto the Intrepid.

Please note that all dates and times are subject to change, as this journey is weather and tide dependent. For up to the minute information, be sure to follow us on Twitter @IntrepidMuseum (http://twitter.com/#!/IntrepidMuseum) and Like us on Facebook (http://twitter.com/#!/IntrepidMuseum).

Ok so I just ran into this story that says the shuttle hit the train bridge and caused some damage. http://jalopnik.com/5915618/a-new-york-barge-pilot-smashed-the-shuttles-wing

Although I didn't notice it at the time my pictures show it hitting the bridge.

From MSNBC:

"The railroad bridge and the Cross Bay Bridge, each presented challenges," said Dennis Jenkins [a member of the United Space Alliance shuttle support team], who was on board the barge with Enterprise. "The passage through the railroad bridge was narrow with only a few feet of clearance on each wingtip, while the Cross Bay was only a few feet higher than the vertical stabilizer," he wrote in an e-mail that was shared with collectSpace.

"Mother Nature did not smile on us. Just as the barge entered the railroad bridge, the wind caught it and pushed the right wing into the bridge abutment. Fortunately, the damage seems to be cosmetic, limited to the foam that covered the wingtip. No structure or mechanisms appear to have been damaged," Jenkins wrote.

The Intrepid confirmed the damage in a statement released late Sunday. "A sudden microburst of wind, measured at 35 knots, caused the rub panel foam protective layer of the wingtip of Enterprise to graze the protective wood piling bumpers in the water designed to bumper vessels," the museum said.

So does this mean that the wing will be repaired before it opens to the public on July 19 ? Could that delay the opening ?

So the grand finale is still on for Wednesday morning right ?

I was planning to watch from Battery Park as she cruises up past the Statue. I might go instead to the pier on 44 St but my fear is it might be very crowded especially with school classes watching. If places by the Hudson are crowded, the view would be blocked. My plan is Battery Park then follow her to the pier. By the time I arrive, she will probably still be in the process of getting hoisted. I did the same procedure with the Concorde and had success. Any thoughts? There's also a chance that for safety reasons, the 42 St. Pier might be completely closed-off to the public. If so, everybody will be disappointed.

According to both the Intrepid's website and Facebook page Wednesdays trip up the Hudson will be about 25 hours later, all the times for Wednesday seem about an hour later than the originals on Tuesday.

Space Shuttle Enterprise is still set to make her journey to the Intrepid Museum, tomorrow, Wednesday, June 6. She is scheduled to depart her current port in Bayonne, NJ at 10:15am and make her way North passing the Statue of Liberty at approximately 10:52am, Ground Zero at about 11:30am. She will reach the Museum at around 12:30pm.

Bummer for me as because of my work schedule may have to catch it at one location and not two.

Cheers

Glad I was keeping an eye on the NBC video to notice it was running early. I hoofed it from work over to Pier 84 with a couple of minutes to spare before Enterprise got there. I stuck around to get shots until it started maneuvering close to the Intrepid, when it was too crowded to find a good spot (and I needed to get back to work anyway). I would have loved to stick around to see it being lifted. I'll try to get a couple of photos up this afternoon.

Yeah but then it would have been a Mad House in Manhattan... I could see from my shots across the river the crowds were insane... In NJ side, the worst crowd I experienced was at Liberty State Park, and EVERYONE had a front row seat... much unlike the Ft Wadsworth experience with 5 people deep at the wall.

All in all, it was much fun following her up river to Weekhawken and Hamilton Park

Had such a memorable time on Wed. Started at the Battery and saw the white shape of Enterprise emerge whenever the sun shone. Met lots of tourists. Several never heard of a Space Shuttle? Then, I took a chance and raced to Pier 84 just south of the Intrepid to see the hoisting. Got there just in time using the #1 train and the M42 bus. I was surprised that the entire pier was opened to the public except for the far end which was delegated to the news media; others were escorted out. Seeing the meticulous work of Weeks Marine was amazing. They had to lift the Orbiter in a precise way. Each time she started to rise, she had to get re-aligned. This process took well-over 3 hours and my feet hurt from standing in 1 place. It was worth the pain although several people left. The view was amazing; the only obstruction was when the huge crane swung in front of us for a short while. I was amazed that the Intrepid allowed people on the pier to see the Enterprise for free; I guess the pier is city property so they had no control. Now for the sad part, I returned on Thursday. I found most of the aft section already covered in scaffolding. Some brave guys climbed to the top of the tail fin and placed a huge US Flag. I fear, on my next visit, the entire fuselage will be scaffolded. I spoke to some workers who said it would be covered in canvas in a day or two. I have a question. Why was it turned to face New Jersey? There must be a reason. Since this tent is only temporary, we will have another chance to see her for free when she gets moved to her permanent home across 12th Ave. Of course, millions must be paid for that. So visitors will have to probably shell-out an additional $24 to enter the Space Pavilion. I congratulate the meticulous work done by Bay Crane and Weeks Marine. The damage to her wing tip was due to a wind gust.

No, the crowds were large but I got there about 12:30 from the Battery and managed to get a good spot by yhe Hudson.. The crowds were worse for the Tall Ship Parade and the Shuttle fly-over. The crowd on Pier 84 got crowded when they started the hoisting procedure. I was right next to the Weeks Crane; which was still there all day on Thursday as well. Maybe they're helping with the scaffolding and construction. One guy hoisted a large US Flag adjoining the tail fin.

No, the crowds were not large. They were worse for the Tall Ship Parade and the Shuttle fly-over. The crowd on Pier 84 only a few yards from the hoisting procedure was not crowded at all. I came late and still get a great spot along the fence right next to the Weeks Crane; which was still there all day on Thursday as well. Maybe they're helping with the scaffolding and construction.

I thought the crowd was very reasonable. A nice little turnout for the middle of the day considering most people were at work, but never oppressive really at all. The city does I believe own the pier just south of the Intrepid (part of Hudson River Park I think), so in spite of the Museum's now insanely bottom-line only focused attitude, they have absolutely no right to close that pier. I enjoyed the moment of history of her arrival, and now never have to pony up the additional $20 for the "privilege" of seeing this significant piece of history. Actually my biggest concern/ annoyance or whatever about the whole Enterprise to Intrepid situation is that it means no 4th of July on the flight deck this year. My wildly better and better looking half surprised me last year with tickets to the flight deck viewing. It was one of the absolute best nights of my life, getting to show her around the museum, take a ton of photos of the aircraft in the collection (although they had the $ tent for food and beverages blocking my beloved Tomcat until after the show), then getting to see the fireworks without dealing with the insanity of 12th avenue. It was perfect, and it's a bummer that the back of the deck will be otherwise occupied for the forseeable future. I'm sure given how they run the place now, they'll probably double the VIP tickets to watch from the hangar deck areas, at least until the shuttle's off the deck. (end of mini-rant)

Anyway, it was a great day, and a fun bit of history to be able to pop in on and memorialize.

It's great that so many of us were able to capture this once in a lifetime moment in New York's history. I couldn't believe I got to see it with my own eyes. I soaked it up as much as I could, because I knew that would be the last time I would see Shuttle Enterprise. Because I will NEVER pay the outrageous amount of money they will be asking for admission.

Speedbird1

I researched the cost of bringing the Enterprise here. Intrepid had to pay NASA $28.8 million to cover the cost of transporting the Orbiter and transporting here to NYC. I think all the other museums were charged the same. Those museums unable to pay up-front lost-out on getting a Shuttle so things went on behind the scenes that were kept quiet. The Shuttles didn't really go to the most worthy but to the wealthiest cities and institutions. Not surprised. This is the norm especially at election time. Now, Intrepid must pay for a permanent protective pavilion which is to be built across 12th Ave. in the future; thus the high cost of visiting her inside her temporary canvas home. Thus, Intrepid really has no choice but to charge outrageous costs to visitors. They are still re-paying for thr repairs to her hull a few years ago. Contributions by entrepreneurs has dropped drastically as has city contributions. They are a well-meaning institutuion with deep financial problems. Remember the corrupt Bill White? The contract forced them to place a tent around the Orbiter so only paying guests could see her. I am still waiting to learn why she faces New Jersey. Any ideas?

You might not have to. Check with your local public library to see if they offer museum passes to the Intrepid. That's how my wife and I got to visit the Intrepid a few years back. It was the first time in my life I was able to say "I was on the Concorde!"

In an attempt to be fair to the folks at Intrepid, I took a gander at their membership info. While a bit high for a single person, it seems like it's not TOO bad a deal. If the shuttle ends up included for members (not exactly holding my breath), it's a decent offer. They also apparently have reciprocal deals with a number of other museums, including the USS Midway museum in CA, which is a nice little angle. Admittedly, the Smithsonian is FREE for just as many priceless aviation treasures, but I did want to TRY to be fair about all the criticisms (including my own) involving Intrepid. It was the first aviation museum I ever went to, so it will always be a special place for me.

No, it really isn't. It is owned and operated by the federal government, so you pay for it through your taxes, whether you visit or not.

If Intrepid needs high ticket costs to offset the price of the shuttle, I'm completely fine with that. Just be honest. But most museums, even the best ones in NYC, offer a free day of the week, or have the admission as a "suggested donation" for those that simply can't afford $50.

Another beef is that when I last went to the museum....I breezed through it in 30 minutes. It feels so empty to me, without a lot of things to truly look at and enjoy, with just a bunch of photos and snoozy history lessons that can't maintain interest. It was very disappointing. Why did they get rid of the giant Iwo Jima statue? They had the space for it.

They also this piece of AA11 that I felt was important...but now is gone and I don't understand why...

I was viewing at Battery Park but I noticed 2 sailing vessels blocking my view. One sailing vessel was advertising Yorkshire. The huge sail kept covering-up the view of the Enterprise. It was from www.welcometoyorkshire.com (http://www.welcometoyorkshire.com). The other sailing boat was from Mount Gay Rum, Barbados. Did these vessels pay to sail alongside the barge or did they just join-in? If they paid a fee, who got the proceeds? These ships ruined many of my photos. Did anybody else notice these ships? Why didn't the Coast Guard chase them away or are they sponsors? Curious matter nobody else brought-up.

Don't you remember Charles Schumer writing letters and making speeches on TV demanding that NYC get a Shuttle? Of course, it has to do with elections? Why did Texas senators make speeches demanding they get the Enterprise? They want VOTES! The background information I found on Wikipedia. Find-out why the Shuttle was forced to be positioned toward New Jersey. Like you, I was invited to an Intrepid event and got turned-away but it is still the best aerospace museum for guys like me who use public transportation and can't get to the Cradle of Aviation ( a museum which nobody hears about except on this site). And why does Jones Beach get the annual air show? They have sponsors willing to shell-out for it.

How is this "sad news"? The plan all along was to enclose the shuttle to protect it from the elements. They never intended to leave it out in the open on the carrier deck.

Speedbird1

If you read carefully, I said the covering-up of the Shuttle was sad news for those who never got a chance to see it. 99% of my friends never saw it gleaming in the sunshine and now never will. Sadly, compared to philatelists and numismatists, plane-spotters like us are in a minority. In fact, when I told my friends on Monday mornings that I had a great weekend back in the 80's and 90's, watching planes arrive at JFK, they laughed at me. There was no NYC Aviation back then, so I thought I was the only one. I am happy Enterprise is being protected from the elements unlike the Concorde where visitors sit under the Delta Wing using it as a shelter from the rain and sun. The Museum promised to cover-up the prototype and they kept their promise. You must admit it looks weird now under the canvas!

I have a feeling that unlike the Concorde which you can go into, the novelty factor of a shuttle that never even went to space will wear off relatively quickly, even among us aviation fans. They are probably relying heavily on merchandise sales and tourists to pay those extravagant admission prices. If I want to see some serious space hardware I'll go to the Cradle of aviation museum.....

. Sadly, compared to philatelists and numismatists, plane-spotters like us are in a minority.

Well, I have to tell you. You may not call them "spotters" but aviation enthusiasts are in the MILLIONS! Just go to St. Martin fro a picture of what regular people will do when they see a large 747 cross over them... When Air France A340 glides in, there were days where over 500 people were under the approach path alone.

Now, take any airshow: 100,000+ and there is one almost every weekend. Or go to any airport with a public viewing area... loaded with regular folks.

The Intrepid: ALWAY PACKED to the rafters, even in pouring rain.

The Smithsonian: So packed I literally said to my wife: "I have to get the eff out of here before I kill someone" ... I just couldn;t enjoy it with everyone cramped all over each other. They need to move into a larger space.

Udvar-Hazy: PACKED! Except they have more room :-)

Museum of Flight at KBFI: Pouring raining, dull Friday afternoon; PACKED!

And the above museums were mostly regular looking families and kids. All were not probably "spotters" like us, but, the enthusiasm is far from "minority"-like

Phil I can kind of commiserate with what Speedbird was saying, at least from a kid's point of view. Maybe it was because I didn't have a car and therefore was limited to spotting from my backyard, but I clearly remember being the ONLY kid in school that paid any kind of attention to what was flying around in the 1980's. Had I known a kid my age named Joe Pries was a couple towns over starting to do his thing I would have made some kind of effort to organize some spotting activities, but the thought that there were people out there that loved aviation like I did didn't cross my mind. Hell, I never saw anyone spotting from Bay Harbour Mall or TSS/Big Banana(now Costco) and we went there on a regular basis. I was definitely ridiculed for being into aviation instead of the things that kids followed back then like sports, Duran Duran, and Reebok sneakers. So once the internet and later this site and others took off yes I was surprised there was a crowd of us out there and that what I thought was a minority was actually a community.

In the 70's too. Before they finished Rockaway Blvd with curbs and the grass it was just sand and on a weekend there would be 100's of cars parked underthe 22's filled with families watching the planes land.

And the tow trucks loved the business they got from pulling the cars that got stuck in the sand out for a modest fee.
