I was relaxing yesterday at Brighton Beach in Brooklyn when suddenly I spotted a US Navy airship passing overhead. I had noticed it earlier flying over the Jersey Shore but it was now headed east towards Jones Beach. I wonder where it was landing. I've never spotted a US airship over the Brooklyn shore before. How rare is this?

Probably not since before 1930 when Rockaway NAS was in business before being turned into Jacob Riis park?

They should land in the huge parking lot for old times sake. That was about where the hangars were.

US Navy blimps were active until approx. 1961/1962, and were locally flown out of Lakehurst New Jersey, although Floyd Bennett I've heard maintained a mast. The current blimp employed by the Navy is basically off-the-shelf technology American Blimp corp A170, and its actually been here once before for Fleet Week in 2007, but at that time it did not have titles. Now it does!

The Army and Air Force both have major LTA (or hybrid really in the case of the Army) projects in development The Blue Devil and LEMV respectively. But don't think we'll be seeing those anyplace close to nyc...
