Just saw this on ASB and thought I'd post the info here also:

The Jersey City, Hoboken and Weehawken waterfronts will offer prime viewing for the Independence Airship Invitational. Three blimps will be in the race, which goes from the Statue of Liberty to midtown Manhattan, today's Jersey Journal reports. The event takes place July 3rd from 5 to 7 p.m. The Hangar 1 Vodka blimp, the Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey blimp, and the DirectTV blimp will participate.

With only 20 blimps in the world, seeing three (or 15 percent of them) in the same place is a rare opportunity.

Weather might be a factor in this race. Like delay/cancel. Rain/thunderstorms being forecast for this afternoon.

Due to the weather I heard it's been rescheduled for July 4th at 5PM.

Also, for anyone going into see the NYC fireworks tonight, keep an eye out for ( 4 ) - F-15 Eagles, from the 104th based up at Westfield, MA, doing a flyover around 8PM down the Hudson also

Does anyone know the cruise speed of an airship? I've just been browsing through some historical posts... and this one along with Chris S's link caught my eye.

FYI - the cruise speed of a typical Good Year Blimp is around 35 mph with a top speed of 53 mph,
and the cruise speed of the Farmers Airship (a Zeppelin NT ) is 35 to 40 mph with a top speed of 78 mph. In 2014 Good Year will be replacing their present fleet of Blimps with 3 new Zeppelins that are 246 ft. long, which is also about 50 ft. longer than their current Blimps.

Didn't they teach you the difference between air speed and ground speed in dispatcher school???
