The Concorde begins is scheduled service for both British Airways and Air France simultaneously, crashes of Galaxy Airlines 203, Pan Am 1104 and an Iranian 727. NASA's MER-A ceases communication form Mars for two days and the first triplane gets off the ground....only for a moment.

I am definitely partial toward the Concorde today, as that was the day I took my first breath in this world.

In addition:

1970 - The Boeing 747 made its first commercial flight from New York to London for Pan American.
