This year I have decided to put the airshow information guide on a separate website because I found it to be the quickest and most effective way of getting information out. It also gave me the tools to add more features to the guide. You can visit the site at http://www.nyasinfo.com . http://www.nyasinfo.com will probably be the primary source of information but I'll update the forums also.I would also like to thank Nycaviation for letting me put the airshow guide on these forums last year and continuing to let me post this guide!

This year being the Centenial of NAVAIR I would love to see the AAM/Organizers put together a Grumman Cat Flight in celebration of. Wildcat, Hellcat, Bearcat, and Tigercat are available. Sadly the days of a Tomcat or Panther are gone, but I'd be happy with the aforementioned!

The other thing would be to have the Horesemen back this year and fly the routine in Bearcat's!

I would love to see a Tomcat at the show, but I think it would cost too much $, even to keep a flying shell of it going.

I know a few years back we were supposed to have a B-2, but it got pulled, and when we had the F-22 there was such a huge buzz about it. We really need a high profile plane to put this year over the top.

I would love to see this year's show push the Navy theme.

Here's my wishlist:
Since we got the 'Birds a Super Hornet Demo is hopefully in the cards along with legacy flight.
Legacy Hornet Demo
Harrier Demo
Above mentioned Cat Demo, or as many Navy warbirds as possible (F4U, TBM, PBY, S-2 Tracker etc...)
E-2 Hawkeye fly-by
EA-6B Prowler flyby
Horsemen Demo in Bearcat's or they have also done it in Corsair's

Anything I'm missing????

All those would be nice.

I expect AAM to have all their warbirds primed and ready and it would be nice if we got the F-18 legacy demo and maybe even a E-2 demo (yes they do have one). We'll get more information next month.

puckstopper55
2010-11-24, 03:10 PM
I still dont understand why they have never had the E-2 demo here! It makes no sense. I actually just got to meet 2 of the test pilots and they both said they love showing the E-2 to its hometown people. I think it would be a great oppertunity to show long island what long islanders can do.

On the same token, get an EA-18, EA-6B and of course the A-10, which is awesome!

Nothing official yet, but there are widespread reports that they will be doing a European tour during June/July 2011, which will cause them to miss a number of their traditional domestic shows...

Fighting_falcon_51
2010-11-26, 03:36 PM
Well I have done my research and I have stated on the main site that the Thunderbirds are tentative. I'm sorry I didn't make it clear in this thread.

Also there is a zero percent chance of the Snowbirds coming because all of their North American dates are scheduled before Memorial Day.

That being said it is fair to make the assumption that it will most likely be the T-birds starring the show because the Blues are booked for 2011, the Snowbirds North American deployment is before Memorial Day, and it seems unlikely that the Red Arrows would headline or Jones Beach not having a major jet team at all.

As I said, it looks like the Thunderbirds can not make it, the Blues have other arrangements and they are trying for the Snowbirds. I would not go saying 0% as this is inside info and they have done it before when we did have a headliner. Red Arrows would be nice and if the AAM is trying a few neat ideas. ;)

It wouldn't be the end of the world if we didn't have a team. It might even keep down the crowds somewhat. I think it would open up the show to more acts and change it up a bit from past years. More individual military demo's, more warbirds, etc....

There are some civilian flight teams I'd love to see as well. The Patriot Jet Team, or the new Heavy Metal Jet Team which is Snort Snodgrass new gig. I love there 'arctic' camo on their T33 and L39's. Then there is always the Starfighters!!

I just hope that someone at the top of the planning chain doesn't get the foolhardy idea in their head "No jet team...no show". That has happened to some other shows in the past and caused it's demise in some cases.

OK....so it's now official.....no team for Jones Beach this year. ASB.TV has the official 2011 scheds posted for all 3 NA jet teams. As stated here the 'Birds are headed to Europe after the USAFA on the 25th.

Now we get to be surprised.......

Update:Update: There are conflicting reports the the Snowbirds are actually going to be at Jones Beach. The Snowbirds schedule shows them to be at St Hubert, QC on the 28-29, but ICAS shows them to be at Jones Beach. I wouldn't get my hopes up high though because it is probably an error because the Snowbirds will actually be attending the 2012 Jones Beach Airshow.

Update: ICAS corrected the above error. No Snowbirds this year.

I'm hoping the ACC steps up and gives us some acts. It's a shame we don't have a jet team this year for such a large Airshow.

If we get a few burner acts I'll be happy though.

Super Hornet
Viper West
F-22
CF-18!

Realistic? Probably not, but hopeful!

FYI- I just read over on the Fencecheck "2011 Military Performers" forums that an
MV-22 Osprey is tentatively scheduled to be on static display at the Jones Beach Air show.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this static display turns into an actual "demo" possibly
Here's the link:

I'm also hoping that since they weren't able to get the USAF Thunderbirds this year,
that they'll be able to book the NEW Civilian 5-ship "Heavy Metal Jet Team" for 2011 !!
Here's a link for their brand new website incase you'd like to see their cool teaser video:

It's not really anybodies fault for not having a demo team. The T-birds are being deployed to Europe, the Blues had their schedule set since 2009, the Snowbirds are doing all out of Canada shows before Memorial day, and teams such as the Red Arrows or Brazilian Smoke Squadron are hard to get. That's just how things fell into place this year.

There have been major airshows without a demo team for the same reason and it has still been successful.

Also as of now we have have an MV-22 static display, US Army Golden Knights, and the AAM. It's getting better by the day if you ask me.

Wow! Over five months to the show and we are already on page three.

Not to be a pessimist but the list for the V-22 is tentative. Also I know there is room at the beach to land but after what happened last year in Staten Island I would guess they are going to be more careful with there landings.

I missed Eisenhower Park last year but heard it was quite the rotor wash. Picture that in the sand.

Besides I am sure the 106th wants to keep their spot at the west end.

They also list the static for Atlantic City. Where would they put it there?

Don't get me wrong I would love to see them, let alone catch them flying in or taking off. Or staging out of Republic. Last year I rode in to Fleet Week just to catch the Thunderchickens in the air.

I am just not getting my hopes up.

I missed Eisenhower Park last year but heard it was quite the rotor wash. Picture that in the sand.

Actually it wasnt that bad even with four copters. The LZ was a large grassy field and the crowds were kept at a relatively safe distance when they both arrived and departed. I think
the problems in SI and Flushing Meadow was that they used baseball fields with lots of dry dirt. That is wonderful for rotorwash.
When the copters departed they returned for low and fast fly-bys. The Cobras and Sea Knight came in together then about almost a minute later the Osprey roared in over the field,
then after clearing the e LZ did a quick turn and climb and was gone. Quite impressive.
Hopefully they do it again.

Chris S
2010-12-11, 10:46 PM

Yes! Now I am excited as I have not seen the Raptor since '07. Add the Super Bug and it will shape up to be a great show as usual.

I'm hoping that with a jet team not occupying the main terminal ramp, that the Raptor will stage out of FRG. This will let them be parked right under the nose of airport ops all the time. I know the Navy and A-10 usualy park at Sheltair.

Today's Newsday (online...) has a story about the air show, saying that for the first time since it began in 2004, neither the Thunderbirds nor Blue Angels will be performing, due to the T-Birds overseas trip. The piece ends with this...

To help fill the empty spot, the East Farmingdale-based American Airpower Museum is putting together a flight of historic bombers, a B-29, B-17 and B-25. The B-29, nicknamed Fifi, is the only B-29 in flying condition in the world.I've been hearing rumors about Fifi, but this is the first I've seen it in print!

ETA - I've had this confirmed by a source...

Nick, it would probably be a lot easier for us to evaluate samples of your work if you point to where you have them posted (Flikr, etc) rather than relying on us to find your photos scattered around the forums.

If we are able to do the event again this year there will be a formal release with instructions on how to enter. It would include you sending in 3 photos to be judged on quality. It is not how many megapixels but rather composition, proper exposure, and artistic quality. For your best chances I would start posts asking "how can I improve my night shots" and put examples.... Many examples. The resources on this forum are incredible and not to use it would be a crime. If your at JFK every night you stand an excellent shot of getting some outstanding captures. Enter your 3 best (if the event is allowed) and cross your fingers. This is how you stand the best chance of finding out if your that good, or improving so you are that good very quickly. I wish you luck but can not play favorites....

Well at least the show is getting better with the A-10 & the F-22.

I still wish that somehow they could get a fly by or two of the still flying Grumman birds or an E-2 demo. When you think of the contributions LI has made to Naval Aviation it would be great to see these planes over Jones Beach.

I can't wait to see the B-29 that should be awesome.

Speaking to someone today, it was mentioned "Fifi doesn't usually travel alone..." Could the CAF bring their B-24 along for the air show? They don't have a 2011 schedule for either aircraft posted yet on their web site. Stay tuned, this might get interesting.

I found that information in the press release. (http://www.prlog.org/11298737-8th-annual-bethpage-federal-credit-union-2011-air-show-at-jones-beach.html)

You sure? According to this (http://www.hrana.org/documents/HeritagePaintProject.pdf) no Super Hornets are scheduled to receive heritage colors. In fact, except for that fugly digital scheme that one SH got, no two-seat Hornets are listed as getting special colors (save one Growler) I haven't seen any photos to show otherwise. VFA-122, which performs the demo, is getting a three-toned Hornet, but it is a single-seat F/A-18C (http://community.warplanes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/11_22D1.jpg).

Has anyone checked out the official web page, and viewed this page "http://www.jonesbeachairshow.com/aircraft_performers.html" ? Is this new, or has it been this way for a while (in anticipation of them getting the T-Birds) and have not updated since?

At first I thought it was last years page, but last year we had the Blues .. I looked at the Snowbirds schedule, and they have nothing scheduled for the last half of May.

I know we have said that the T-Birds will be in Europe for Memorial Day, but their schedule has no shows for that weekend ..

moose135
2011-03-01, 11:43 AM
I don't know what the deal is with that page - looks like it has the list from 2009, with the Thunderbirds, Snowbirds, and Horsemen, none of which are scheduled to be here this year. This page: http://www.jonesbeachairshow.com/aircraft.html looks to be more accurate, listing the F-22 and A-10 demo performances.

The Thunderbirds have Memorial Day weekend as open on their schedule as that is when they will be traveling to Europe. They perform their standard flyover of the USAFA graduation on Wednesday, May 25, then their next show is the weekend after Memorial Day, June 4 & 5 in Turkey. That's a 10 day block of time to pack up, move everything across the pond, and get set up to perform over there. Not that I'm happy about it, but that's life...

On their FaceBook Page Bethpage Airshow has the following,

This year, the Bethpage Federal Credit Union Air Show at Jones Beach will help commemorate America’s Centennial of Naval Aviation – a true milestone for our country! With this, we are pleased to officially announce this year’s lineup for the Air Show, taking place Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 28, 2011 and Sunday, May 29, 2011, from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

To date, the following world-class military performers scheduled to perform include:
U.S. Airforce F22 Raptor, U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, A-10 East Demo Team, United States Air Force Heritage Flight, 106th New York Air National Guard Air Flight Rescue Demo HC-130/HH-60, World War II B17 Flying Fortress, World War II B25 Mitchell Bomber, World War II B29 Superfortress.

The leading civilian performers to date include:Sean D. Tucker – Team Oracle, John Klatt – National Guard Reserve, GEICO Skytypers, David Windmiller, American Air Power Museum Warbirds, and Mike Goulian.

Stay tuned for more exciting details about this year’s performers and show lineup!

and

Did you know that on January 18, 1911, a civilian pilot named Eugene Ely became the first person to ever land an aircraft on board a ship, flying a Curtiss pusher onto a makeshift wooden platform constructed on the armored cruiser Pennsylvania in San Fransisco? Then, on May 8, 1911, Pre-World War I, Capt. Washington Irving Chambers, United States Navy, officer in charge of aviation, prepared contract specifications for the U.S. Navy's first aircraft to be purchased from aviator and inventor Glenn H. Curtiss, making this day the official birthday of U.S. Naval Aviation. Now, 100 years later, Naval Aviation has scored an impressive list of achievements in both peace and war and the Centennial of Naval Aviation, kicked off this past January, includes a year-long celebration of events and commemorations including airshows, art exhibits, flyovers and tactical demonstrations. The Bethpage Federal Credit Union Air Show at Jones Beach is proud to be included as one of the U.S. Navy's official 2011 Centennial Events, one of only a few East Coast air show stops for the Centennial Flight!

For more information on the Centennial of Naval Aviation, go to www.facebook.com/navalaviation100 (http://www.facebook.com/navalaviation100) or www.navalaviationcentennial.org (http://www.navalaviationcentennial.org/) .

Does the term Tacdemo imply something different other then a what we have seen at Jones Beach before or is this the usual 10-15 minute air show routine?

Chris S

The Navy TAC Demos are just the usual 10 - 15 minute demos flown by
the F-18 Legacy Hornet & Super Hornets from VA-106 and VFA-122.
The Navy usually posts the TAC DEMO schedule for the entire year at once,
but now it seems they're only going to post it from month to month this year
FYI- I emailed the PAO of VFA-106, so I'm hoping he'll get back to me and explain why they had a change their policy this year as to when the schedule is released.

It was a ride of a lifetime.... to get to see Sean in the air so close to the chase plane was amazing. He is an incredible
pilot that words can not properly explain. When you see him fly off the wing of your airplane and during 10 minutes you
do not see him get more than 3 feet closer or three feet further from his position, it is just amazing to see such skill.

To flip an aircraft inverted and not get 3 feet closer or 3 feet further from his original position off the chase plane...
Amazing is not close to the feeling. I had never seen anything like it. The closest I can come to explaining is to drive
a car at 100mph and keep the tire 2 inches from the curb and go around a corner.... To say he is the man is an
understatement. I was always a huge fan but had no idea how good his skill truly was up until that flight.

He does not do anything on a whim and his preflight for the 3 aircraft photo flight was professional, well choreographed
and did not leave much to "Winging it". The pilots knew what they were going to do in advance and were all on the same
page.

I had never felt more safe in ANY aircraft as when I was flying with Brian Norris with Sean just off my wing. It truly was
a flight of a lifetime and an experience that will keep me smiling for years to come. I am forever in debt to Team Oracle
for the experience that can not be put into words. It was for lack of a better word.....a Religious Experience... and that
too is an understatement!

RE: Runway 14/32 Closure-Thursday, April 7th

The purpose of this memorandum is to notify all tenants of the temporary closure of Runway 14/32 on Thursday, April 7, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This closure is necessary in order to conduct a survey for the installation of temporary arresting gear on Runway 14/32. The installation of this equipment is required to accommodate military aircraft participating in the 2011 Memorial Day Air Show. Please note that Runway 1/19 will be open and fully available during this time.

Please review all NOTAMs for updates or changes to this notification. If you should have any questions or concerns regarding this notification, please contact John Arancio, Assistant Airport Manager at 631.386.6107.

We appreciate your cooperation and apologize for any inconvenience.

Maybe they'll reconsider basing the F-22 at FRG?
No they won't. From a trusted source (who I won't name publicly) the gear is required so FRG can act as an emergency divert field for the F-22. It will be raised when the F-22 is flying at the beach, but the aircraft is not planning to fly out of FRG. There may be other assets that will be able to use FRG because the gear is in place, but nothing definite (and no, nothing earth-shattering).

puckstopper55
2011-04-04, 02:15 PM
isnt this the same gear they use when the T-Birds are in town? I am surprised they would need a full day to conduct a survey for something they have done many times.

Fighting_falcon_51
2011-04-04, 04:27 PM
I would also imagine that gear may be for some possible fast movers that may come ( like the F-18 Tacdemo).

Also while this is not guaranteed it would be nice to see the F-22 do some passes like it did back in 08'.

forgive my ignorance on this but here goes .. are those arresting cables, similar to those on an aircraft carrier? I only ask because I know the Navy does not use F-16's, or F-22's and didn't think they had the necessary tail hooks like a normal Navy Jet. The blue Angels made sense because, well NAVY = tail hook.

Also, what is anchoring these things down? I would imagine the force put on these (even know its letting out cable as the jet takes it) it tremendous. Thanks for the info guys.

All airforce jets fighters have the hook for arrestor sytems...they are not like Navy and are like Rubber and extend very far to slow the jet down gently. If you trap an F-16 on a carrier it will decelerate so fast that it will probably break the hook and splash or twist the aircraft where it could not be used again.
If you look at the picture above there are very long metal pins that stick into the ground and anchor it down deep into the ground. (looks like metal zigzags in the picture and the little black dots go underground very deep as they are very long strong rods.

Not really, the arrestor system does not damage the aircraft, this system shown above has metal fiber straps that tears into the wings and everything it touches, it destroys the aircraft.

Hi, everybody.

Planning to attend, and I've read most of this thread. I presume (hope?) there will eventually be a specific breakdown of the show's schedule? I've checked out the various websites, but all I can find for the actual days of the show is "Airshow: 10AM - 3PM". Will something be posted that will indicate exactly when each event is scheduled?

Thanks!

That was the one I had seen that just had the two days listed:
Saturday May 28th

Airshow 10AM-3PM

I was hoping for something along the lines of:

10:30AM - F-22 team
12:15PM - B-25...
...etc...

Assuming it's not there because it's not been announced just yet, I'll keep checking for updates! You always seem to post stuff immediately, so I'm guessing we simply don't know yet. Thanks again!

Chris,

You are always the optomist! That would be great to get a B-1, but unfortunately I think this years show, despite being a "Tier I Naval Event" is going to be a bit disappointing. I really hope I am wrong but we are less than two months to go and ......................... Still keeping my hopes up.

What amazes me is with all the contributions that Long Island has made to Naval Aviation over the years that this isn't getting more "metal"

............For your best chances I would start posts asking "how can I improve my night shots" and put examples.... Wonder what the attendance will be at this years airshow without a headlining big star attraction? Sure all of us here on this board are aviation aficianados but what about the casual observer? I think the lack of the T-Birds or Angels will definitely keep people away especially if the weather isnt that great. To be honest I'm not exactly thrilled there isnt a demo team performing and might just spend my time at FRG. I already have my vacation time put in for August and will be heading down to AC for "Thunder Over The Boardwalk" August 17th.

If the Raptor doesn't close the show, then yes I'd wager there will be no problem leaving the lots at JB at 3:00 pm. Ironically, I am sure FRG and New Highway (which most people tell me that's where they go to avoid the 'crowds') will be a mad house!

I enjoy going to the show at the beach, and in the last 7 years I can't say that I've had a bad experience at all. This is the show to take the kids to, as if they get board they usually just play in the sand, or my wife takes them over to the Jumperoos at the west end. You can't beat the price, $8 bucks a car load, AND you can bring the cooler. Can't do that at other shows. I just make sure I'm on the Wantagh at 0900 at the toll booths. Once through the gate I bear right and go to field 3 to park. We enter at the West bath house and make are way to slightly right of show center. After the show, we kill some time and head to the car for 3:45 pm. With 3 parkways right there traffic dispenses relatively quickly.

That New Highway on Sat/Sun though scares me. It's wall to wall cars/people, the road is still open to thru traffic and it results in some flared tempers from non airplane interested drivers trying to get from one end to another who had no clue there was a show going on. Add people and kids crossing the road from behind parked cars trying to get up to the fence, and I worry that someone is going to get hit one day. IF that happens I can just see PD closing the road off from parking in the future.

This year I will want to capture the B-29 taking off and landing. I have ramp access as I fly out of the Echo Ramp. I imagine the 29 will use 14-32 so I'll have a front row seat on one of the days I don't head to the beach.

Unfortunately this has happened before.

Here is the cause
http://derf.smugmug.com/photos/880303599_ofuPK-XL.jpg

and the EFFECT
http://derf.smugmug.com/photos/880303882_pGB3Q-L.jpg

It is rare that a NEW HWY Accident is not serious.

Last year they filled the potholes, and filled in the sides of the roads WITHOUT closing the road for a day!

The above accident was on May 26, 2010 right before Blue Angel #7 was coming in. The accident put two spectators in the hospital.

I'm not trying to scare or make anyone nervous but I do have some advice.

Drivers: Don't drive like a moron.

Spectators: Be careful. Have situational awareness and don't bring your kids there.

Honestly since most of the planes are going to be at the AAM this year a year membership at the AAM ($55) is worth it!

Great point Ken, UNLIMITED ACCESS TO THE AAM $55 per year

Yes, Get a year membership and you get unlimited access during airshow weekend, Labor day weekend and all other times they are open! If I did not have an airport badge I would
have it as I would spend more than that airshow week alone to be there. New highway is great for takoffs using one runway, and the AAM is the best spot for the other runway. How many of you guys are considering this awesome deal? Good thinking Ken

New Highway is a no go for me during the Air Show. Last year I did the Practice Show on Friday then hung out in the lots by the movie theater and Dave & Busters and caught plenty of action. Went to the Terminal to see the jets up close and even down by Atlantic in the back by Runway 1. All pretty much stress free,
BTW, without starting a new thread and going a little off-topic here, are the USMC planning their demos around the area again? Thanks.

Def sounds interesting. Though I do believe the parking lot by the control tower would work well for me again this year. Though this year I have a new car that I dont want to dent by stepping on the roof.......

I'm already "enlisted" l. Not for nothing but $55 to me is a very small price to pay considering all they do for alot of us. Between opening their ramp to us all the time like memorial day weekend and labor day weekend and the History Under the Stars among others, it's the least we can do to support an organization that supports us so generously.

F-18 Demo. Buster from AAM Ops has already mentioned that on ASB. Funding for the demo teams was approved when Congress signed the CR the night of the pending shutdown. NAVAIR is still holding off on releasing the sched to month by month.

After the last info on the F-18 demo, that may be about it.... There is also going to be a pair of static aircraft (not saying) and possible one other thing(s) but it that looks iffy at best. The F-18 demo is what had me drooling but I will not go into any further info on that

Well, even if the Navy doesn't clear the F-18 Demo team to do their regular demo,
there's good chance they'll still come up to do a Legacy flight with the Corsair at least,
because that's exactly what VFA-106 did last week at the Beaufort show with their
special BLUE Centennial F-18 and a Corsair

Oh and BTW, The Beale show had a surprise appearance by the B1-B last week also:biggrin:

The U.S. Air Force has temporarily halted flights of the Lockheed Martin Corp. (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/quote?ticker=LMT:US) F-22 jet because of “recent reports of potential oxygen system malfunctions,” according to Air Combat Command (http://www.acc.af.mil/).

FYI- The potential malfunctions with the Onboard Oxygen Generating System (OBOGS) may have caused the F-22 crash in the Fall of 2010 up in Alaska, that was responsible for the loss of Capt. Jeffery Haney of the 525th Fighter Squadron, and may involve more aircraft than the Raptors.

Well in the recent press release by the BFCU they still listed the F-22 so I guess its safe to assume it hasn't been officially cancelled by ACC yet which hopefully means there is still hope for it . Then again, who knows.
