Just had the urge to get out for about an hour to see if I could get the A380 from a different perspective. Here are only a few. By the way, is the TAM a new scheme? I don't recall seeing this one before.

It figures its old :-( We can never get lucky I guess LOL. I was out this morning trying to catch the new AA ribbon... boy what a HORRIBLE morning. Kennedy was wrapped in a thicket of high and low clouds, fog, all yuck. The ceiling must have been 200-500 feet at least on 31L.

It was a lousy day weather wise. The sun briefly popped out around 2-ish, and then got quickly obscured. They mostly used the 4s today, but briefly switched to 13s and then back to the 4s. I tuned into the tower, and an aircraft waiting to depart on 4L report to the tower that there was boat past the buoy. The tower confirmed the sighting and must of contacted NYPD. Within 10-15mins a NYPD helio was onsite between the 4s from what I heard. I guess the boater must have gotten the message and moved. It was interesting to say the least.

Some of the very few that I was able to salvage from the carnage...

This is what it REALLY looked like :-( About a second or two after this shot: in the clouds.

I looked at the tails and figured, two of the same LAN... I was surprised when I looked harder

http://manny.smugmug.com/Airplanes/Spotting/JFK-11152010/MAG6725/1092373390_ZbYHX-O.jpg

and this one which I can't seem to get "in the air"

Sun Country was a total surprise :-)

Yeah, I said the same thing. I could not believe that on the worst weather day, I get two surprises and well, the results were not what I would have wanted. Looks like Friday /Sat will be nice again.,.. next few days will suck!

How long can you stay in T5 to shoot? And where, exactly, do you sit? Nobody bothers you???

Did the Emirates A380 land on 31L as usual or on the 13's? or on 4R/L? curious because the taxiing looks like it did not come from the usual angle .. if she lands on 31L it rolls from that side right to the gate, it never taxies as in the shot I believe. There is no room to turn her around LOL.

A380 can land 22L/4R and 13's

gonzalu

OK, I know it can technically land on any RWY at Kennedy but they do prefer specific ones for the A380s. I have gotten various reasons and the most prevalent one seems to be obstructions on 31R prevent it from coming on there. I figured on the 4's or 22's it will favor the outer RWY (22L/4R) and for 13s that it would prefer 13R.

I just want to be ready for it if they ever change the pattern on me. I have always caught it on the 31L RWY whenever I have gone out to get it either the Air France or the Emirates

Thanks for the knowledge Eric :-)

The A380 usually comes in on 13L when the 13's are in use. its quite a sight.

I have shot it on 22L many times.

Ah, OK thanks... that;s good to know. I can;t wait to be there one day when 13s are in use. The only spot I have not been to so far is Woodmere park.

Woodmere Park, I grew up in that park. Best time to go there is for 31R early in the morning and 22's in mornings.

I figured that ... I have to do that next time. Panera sucks early in the morning in winter and Lowes Parking lot is just not great, not to mention the security there is all over the place constantly ready to throw you out :-) I will try that next time I am out catching an early bird!

Thanks

Althought Woodmere Park is a very nice place, I was not very fond of spotting from there (maybe because my lens at the time was too short .... 70-300mm). Maybe with my 80-400mm I may have better luck. Will try one of these days to make it there again.

I grew up in Lawrence so North Woodmere Park was visited frequently. That last comment about the 70-300 is tragically too true; only the biggest heavies fill the frame even if you've walked all the way to the edge of the park by the bathrooms. The other thing is that during the summer you have to have a Nassau Parks ID to get in there.

The Lowes comment is also too bad because I enjoyed AM shooting from there in summers when it was still Pergaments. They never bothered you then. My youtube Concorde clip was taken from that spot

Mark, Have you shot 31R arrivals there or just 22L, because for 31R you don't need much more then 200 for any aircraft type. Again for 31R you want to be there at sunrise and at most you have about an hour or so before the shadows start creeping in on the nose of the plane.

I was there for 22L arrivals. I'll have to check it out again. Thanks for the insight Eric it's greatly appreciated.
