View Full Version : If You Were Rich...

I've always said that if I were to become rich, I would not develop any rich tastes. My "dream" car is currently valued at under $30,000, and I may upgrade some camera equipment or so. Nothing too crazy beyond making sure that my family was well provided for.

However, Aero L-39 Albatros, a small fighter jet, has become very available for purchase by regular private pilots, and they are becoming very popular and common in the US, at a cost that is not too bad for an airplane at about $250,000.

Learning that, I came across some of these photos of how other American pilots have painted their Albatros'. Keep in mind that it is legal for a regular person to paint their private plane this way if they desire...

I would paint mine in ATA colors, and bring back my favorite reg, N301TZ. Easy decision!

So, as if my mother was not frightened enough about my exceeding 50 miles per hour on the Cross Island Parkway, if I ever strike it rich, I'll one day be tearing @$$ in a fighter jet above my parents’ house at a screaming 450mph (by the way, the speed limit in the air below 10,000 feet is 250mph, but there are no cops up there. So eff it!).

What would you do if money was not too much of an issue? I’d like to hear both “reasonable” and super-fantasy answers!

$250K is cheap Phil, barely the price of a mortgage on a house! :P

Love the idea of ATA colors on a bird like that - would you do new or classic? I would do the same thing, only with TWA classic colors.

Phil, let me tell you that an L-39 is a pretty sweet ride - and this is coming from someone who has flown in the back seat of one!

Should I come into a bit of money, I, too, would not develop any rich tastes - except for having my dream hangar full of airplanes: Stearman, Pitts, Cirrus SR22, T-6, L-39, and a King Air. I won't drive a Lexus or Acura or Cadillac... just a nice car that's reliable - though I may renew it every five years or so.

I'd have a normal sized house... no McMansion or something with 43 bedrooms. Just your typical four bedroom, two story house w/ basement, two car garage, and basically everything I'd need and nothing more.

Oh, and my L-39... I'd leave it in the markings of an air force from Europe...

i'd own a couple land rovers, expecially older collectable ones. i'd want a place here in the city and probably get a house in either AZ or CA. in terms of airplanes i'd only buy two:

Pilatus PC-9 and a PC-12.

and i'd paint them like this:
1710165

best part is that i've already spoken to the FSDO and there is no reason why i couldn't have my airplanes painted that way. the rule says i just can't have any foreign military markings but nobody really cares about the scheme.

I'd purchase N88ZL and put it in Pan Am colors one side and TWA on the other...

Reasonable? An open cockpit biplane or one of these

I'd love to envision the A10 become an Warbird one day. That would be one of #1.

I would want to get my own private 787 and be able to go any where in the world. Start a small airline (with the 787) that has 1 plane and a few flights a day out of BFI. On Monday the plane would go to HNL and back then Tuesday through Friday 2 daily round trips to LAS. Friday it would do LAS and then head for HNL from there. Then Sat and Sun LAS and back once and then LAX and back.

An A-10 is dreaming but now your talking about one of only 2 aircraft ever built with the 2 Seater A-10...You are just talking crazy now. Nobody has that much money. You are better off making one from scrach....I think it would be cheaper!

Fine fine, I'll just solve murders and let my friend do the flying.

I'd love to have one of these:

http://velocityaircraft.com/airplane-models-txl.html

Two Hundred Fifty Knots in that thing! And it looks vastly different than most other aircraft. The only downside is you gotta build it yourself, but if I'm rich, I can just buy one that someone already finished.

Check out the Turbo their currently developing. It reminds me a bit of the Beech Starship or Piaggio Avanti.

If I were rich, I'd hire a bunch of lawyers and bury the TSA in motions and injunctions past their eyeballs.

Then I'd go see if Don Scherer wants to sell me his Beech Starship.

I took my father out to FRG yesterday and got to show him an Albatros up close. I'm shocked that he thought it was cool and that if I ever getmy hands on one, that he wants a ride! haha

I like all of your ideas, but my dream purchase would be a 757 -- as well as fuel and a place to keep it.

However, more realistically, I would settle (is that the right word? hehe) for a DeHavilland Dash 8-102. They're small, don't need much space to take off (I had a 4-second t/o roll when doing LGA-ROC last year), and don't use as much fuel as a jet. Plus, then I'd have room for all of my friends :)
