I figured this would be a good time to finally join the site and this would be a good first thread. Today in Times Square, the Red Bull Air Race had a big promotion on Broadway between 43rd and 44th Streets that included a small tented exhibit and one of the Red Bull planes! Present today was N669RB, a Zivko Edge 540. I managed to take some photos during my lunch break and after work, and thought you'd all like to see them. You can click on the photo to see them in the full size (I have yet to figure out how to get a decent size to come up here -- the full size is too big!).

When I left work around 5pm, they began dismantling the plane:

The Red Bull Air Race World Championship will be in Liberty State Park in Jersey City on June 19 & 20. They gave out cards with some information about the race. The race will be in an area just off Ellis Island, according to a map on the card. The card also said:

For the first time, the Red Bull Air Race World Championship will take place over the Hudson River on June 19 & 20.
> The Red Bull Air Race features the world's best pilots in a motorsports competition that uses the fastest, most agile and lightweight racing planes.
> Pilots navigate one-at-a-time a low-level aerial track made up of air-filled pylons.
> Each race is a two-day competition with a Qualifying and Race Day.
Since the race will not be viewable from Lower Manhattan frequent ferry service and transportation will be available.
Per federal regulation, no planes will fly around or within 500 feet of any person, building or landmark

Before the Red Bull Air Race arrives, we want you to know that:
> We respect the safety and security concerns of the people in New York and New Jersey, especially in regard to aircraft. Flying will begin on Thursday, June 17.
> We are working closely with local officials to ensure safety not only for the pilots, but also for the spectators, residents and crew members.
> The Red Bull Air Race planes are high performance planes and they do generate an exciting roar as they pass by the spectators. The noise level runs about 80-90 decibels and that's about the level of noise that a lawnmower or a motorcycle at 25ft away makes.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

Did any of you guys see the plane today? I thought it was pretty cool. Working in Times Square is fun: last week a fake beach by Corona, today a Red Bull plane, what'll be next??

I was asked to help remove the wings yesterday but I was too busy doing an air to air photoshoot when they did it.
Here is a pic after the wings were off,

tomorrow I hope to get much cooler shots with the wings on it over the Atlantic Ocean at around 6:30

Great first post and welcome to the site! :borat:

As Fred implied, that plane is part of the Jones Beach Airshow and is flown by none other than Kirby Chambliss. Not only is he an exceptional air racer, but he is a PHENOMENAL aerobatic pilot, with an aerobatic routine that I believe is modeled off of the great aerobatic pilots you see everywhere else in the world (Skip Stewart and Sean Tucker's new routine are probably the most hardcore you'll find in the country, aside from Kirby).
