You just have to want it enough. Of course, I should have listened to myself and gone out earlier in the afternoon when there would have been light on it...

I was down there today and it's still there. I was speaking with a couple of guys I know who work there and they said they heard he's going out tomorrow (Tues). Keep in mind, it's he said/she said info so I don't know how reliable it is.

I was also in my usual paperwork spot today catching up on my phone calls and a suffolk cop tossed me for the first time ever! I knew the rep of the PD's that work the airport but I had a good spot where my truck blended in and I got a great view of the runway. The cop was pretty cool about it but I didn't give him any crap, I started packing my stuff up as soon as I saw him turn around and start driving back. Lots of security floating around there this week so if you go to snap shots, make sure you have your ID readily available and be nice! :D

He might be able to afford to fly and maintain a 707 but I imagine even for him it might qualify as an indulgent luxury. He purchased it some time ago and maintained it in a TWA double globes cheat line (cheat line only and in blue actually) before that he bought a "connie" which he later passed on to another owner (if there was ever any question JT was not an aviation geek). I had read JT was fetching 20 million a picture at one point, but of course not nearly all of that would go into his pocket. I agree, the Qantas deal is probably saving some relevant $$$$.

The Lockheed in question is now located in Lakeland Florida. It is owned by someone I have had the pleasure to get to know quite well as a Florida resident and member of the aviation business. Mr. Kermit Weeks. The airplane is painted in Lufthansa colors. Or at least it was. I have not been to the area in recent times. Mr. Travolta also has a Jetcommander or one that at least once was his located at Vaughn in that lot next to Marriot across from LGA. It is clearly visible from the street. At one point he also owned a lear23 which was untill recently in posession (mostly parted out) of one of my former employers in Florida.
Intresting note about his Gulfstream. He visited SRQ once with it and the ramper who was towing it to parking (previously fired from ASA for leaving an engine cowling unhinged causing it to seperate in flight) pushed the Gulfstream so far up the lip of the ramp it rolled over into the mud and it took two Peterbuilt wreckers to unstick it from there. Mr. Travolta was not physically present when it occured (thankfully) but his other pilot was. Lucky for us, no damage past a few chinks and scuff marks in the main landing gears clear coat protection that is painted over it for corrosion protection from the straps tied around them to get her out.

Tom since you brought it up.
I guess I should post a shot of the older colors of N707JT. There are not many shots of the plan when it was painted like this so my shot is very special to me. I love the TWA-ish look a few classic livery. Too bad he paints the plane gray instead of leaving it with bare metal.

Travolta is worth about 1.4 bil, Hanks is worth 1.9. Either way more then enough to support his flying hobby. Who know's what Trump is worth since it's been disputed a number of times.

Thanks Ryan, yes that's right. "Planes of Fame" right? A bit pricey, but arguably the best aviation museum I have been to. Kermit Week's aircraft are in pristine condition, some or many of them airworthy (last i knew) or theoretically so at least. A examples are nothing short of excellent, and with the addition of the Connie, only more so. I was driving past one night going to Fort Myers, and you can't help but see that DC-3, all lit up diving into the ground. :D

I believe it was probably Mr. Weeks who attempted to get Comet Canopus over to Florida back around 1999, but sadly, if understandably, the powers that be in that instance in the UK would not give her up to leave the country.

<< Mr. Travolta also has a Jetcommander or one that at least once was his located at Vaughn in that lot next to Marriot across from LGA.>> Haven't noticed it lately Ryan, but I suppose its still there. The aircraft seem to have been moved around from time to time.

My guess are the odds would be relatively high considering that you are shooting with a fairly basic point and shoot and likely have limited editing ability. So do not beat yourself up. I actually much enjoy your photographic perspective on the departure. The appearnce of your photos lend to the appearnce of having been captured "in era" with early color film camera. And it also has the effect of accentuating the smoke contrails being emitted from the engines.

NLovis,
Don't feel too bad. N707JT hits the NY, NJ area countless times throughout the year. I can almost garantee you will see it within a year just work on getting a better set up before the next arrival. You might have to hit EWR or SWF maybe even JFK.

I just peeked into this thread now but WOW that thing smokes BEAUTIFULLY! I assume she's hushkitted but the smoke trail is still there!

NLovis, those are cool shots and yes they do look old school nostalgic and to be honest I'm personally not a fan of 100% grain free images myself, they're boring to me. Anyone would be extremely lucky to see a 707 in action and even more with the smoky old engines!

Be happy you're able to catch a 707 in 2010. So, give yourself an applause, Congratulations! :D

[quote="NLovis"]Yea i'm happy about catching it but I also wanted some good shots. Yea I was using an ancient film camera and those shots arent edited. Thats how they came out. Camera is from the 80's and the film was fujifilm. I think it was the crappy film that got me.

Stop beating yourself up over the pictures. They are fine. Unlike some aviation photo sites the guys and girls on here
are not judgemental and if they do give any criticism its only in the helpful sense. That is why this is the BEST aviation
website on the Net. :D :D

Thanks kid. Just keep practicing the shooting, and really learn how to edit and you'll get there. Don't be afraid to ask questions about shooting or editing. I'm sure you'll get some real helpful answers from quite a few people here.We were all beginners once and, at least for me, without the help of some of the great folks here and on some other sites, I wouldn't be half the photographer I am today. Never stop learning. If you need anything, shoot me a pm bro.

Yea i'm happy about catching it but I also wanted some good shots. Yea I was using an ancient film camera and those shots arent edited. Thats how they came out. Camera is from the 80's and the film was fujifilm. I think it was the crappy film that got me. Here are 2 more.

The shot without the fence in the way I like it a lot, find it nostalgic and interesting, so what if the plane isn't perfectly sideways? you got a very interesting background. That looks like it was taken in the 1970s! Don't let it go to your head but that's my favorite out of all the Travolta 707 shots on the thread, I'm not joking.

I'd like to know what film that is exactly?? Seems to be very good actually.

Really dig the result on a cloudy-bright day. If I get me another film camera body I'll like to try that film when the weather isn't so good and my digital will be collecting dust!

That film seems to have excellent color contrast and saturation in difficult light (visibly superior to digital) and could not have come out better given the conditions. The plane just pops out of the image. Same shot on digital would've come out ugly and needed heavy editing to look half as good. Just beware that camera has a light leak. Some pictures might not come out at all.

With a SLR film camera and zoom lens you will be able to zoom in and get good action shots.

I was zoomed in for those shots. If I use another camera I lose 140mm on my range and my range only goes up to 200mm max. The film wasnt all that great. Next time I buy i'm buying Kodak film.

ok the film sucks, the camera is great. I'm still curious so is it ok to say which type it was? (there are many kinds of fuji films)

example: Fuji Reala 100, Fuji blah blah 200, etc

Mario - you actually make me want to go out and shoot some prints - were it not for the time and cost involved (and then scanning). I do miss the Kodak Gold 100 and the Fuji 100/ Fuji Reala 100. They've got to be much harder to find now I suppose.

If I remember correctly it was Fuji 500

I have to agree with both of you. I thought I was alone in feeling that way too. Nlovis images had that nostalgic feel to them and give you a "authentic" feeling. They remind some of us of a time before everyone had to have big lenses and fancy cameras and just getting thew plane was ENOUGH. I guess in the age of cookie cutter pictures in aviation photography its sometimes nice to see something that doesn't like its just another shot.

I agree Senga. Not to take away from anyone elses shots because they are all pretty killer and if you can nail a 707 these days you do it. But........ You are spot on. I feel like I whipped out a picture album in my grandfathers old photo collections or somthing.

Yea man, a 707 docked at the terminal in 1974 or something like that. That shot could fool anybody.

This might seem like an exaggeration but I personally enjoyed the photos at airliners.net more in the early days when everything was taken on film and all 15 shots per page weren't all side-ons in perfect sun, cloud-less skies or with the same contrast/saturation. Each photo had a different look of its own.

ps: Tom I think Kodak doesn't even make Gold 100 anymore. Kodachrome is gone but there are some good newer 100 speed slide films that still exude classic photographic joy. For some FUN in cloudy and difficult light I'd like to try possibly Fuji NPS 160 or a faster film like the one NLovis is using, which sounds to me like some kind of Fuji 400 film (since there's no 500).

...btw, for anyone who might try shooting print film, beware that pictures taken with SLR cameras developed at drugstore-type photo labs almost always come out with awful colors, I guess they calibrate their printers for $10 point-and-shoot cameras (what most people shoot with).

I tried Kodak Ektar 100, developed it at Target and the blue sky came out dark gray   Best to have it scanned to experience how the film really performs.

800 speed film will give you too much grain. For such days with bad/low light or if you must shoot a plane that's back-lit (as in that last shot), 400 speed is about the highest you want to be shooting. Grain and lack of sharpness usually increases too much after that.

you know that graininess gives it a texture though, those shots echo the 707s the way they appear in my minds eye, spewing smoke, roaring like thunder, arcing majestically over Jamaica Bay,Pan AM,TWA,Lufthansa,Braniff,BOAC,etc.etc., those 1st generation jets had presence, and those somewhat grainy shots capture that essence.

Next time I buy i'll remember that. As for now though I have another 800 in the camera that I have to use or lose. Only problem is I need a zone where 200mm is more then enough. I dont have any lenses that go further.

Your camera has a light leak anyways, on a second thought for what you are doing 800 will be fine. And the new 400 and 800 films are much better now than 10 years ago. Beware Kodak 200 speed films are awful though. 400 is actually better.

If you used Fujifilm Superia 800, the reviews for it are actually pretty good http://www.photographyreview.com/mfr/fu ... 20crx.aspx (http://www.photographyreview.com/mfr/fujifilm/print-film/PRD_84431_3120crx.aspx)

727C47, I agree with you. The angles and the shots on this thread are awesome, but (in my opinion) N707JT simply doesn't look good (or right) on digital. Film grain texture gives the photo character and snap, make it look more real than digital, which despite grainless and neatness is flat/boring in comparison.

I saw 707Jt at LAX ,in January 08,I was at the old Imperial terminal, when she rotated right in front of us, and banked away streaming smoke, that JT3 scream/roar washing over us,man talk about presence ! An A320 has nothing on that !

You can say that again. The only other planes that have a presence are the DC-9's, Mad Dogs, and the 747 classics (100 and 200). Anyway where is the leak?
