i've had a Western Digital external hard drive for some time now, and the power supply just decided to all it quite the other day. i've gotten the drive itself hooked up via an adapter just need to find a way to get the data off of it. anyone have software for this? i'm pretty sure the info is still there, the drive itself if functioning perfectly but when i open it in windows i get a blank screen.

In the past, I've used Photorec to recover data from memory cards. I'm pretty sure you can also use it for recovering data from a hard drive. Just be warned that it will recover EVERYTHING, it just won't maintain the directory structure, so you'll have a lot of sorting to do once it's finished.

sorry, I thought you were talking about a camera memory card on Facebook. If you can not see the drive it does not sound good. If you hear clank clank clank when it starts with your ear to the drive, it means that it can not find track zero and it does not look like data recovery would be possible. I just lost a 1.5 terabite drive... I fell your pain. Sorry

At this point I'd weigh the value of the contents of the drive. Drive Savers Data Recovery (www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com (http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com)) actually takes the drive apart in a sterile environment, and takes the individual platters out, and they take the data off it manually.

How do you have it hooked up? Does the adapter also provide power?

I would try this program http://download.cnet.com/FireLion-Get-M ... 75473.html (http://download.cnet.com/FireLion-Get-My-Files-Back/3000-2094_4-10775473.html) you can see what it will recover before you buy it and its only $20.
