I have to say the Blue's and the other performers put on a great show despite some of the weather and technical difficulties.

That fog kept us from flying the shoreline on our way in. Plus we had to circle for about 30 minutes prior to landing. Looking forward to better weather this year!

Don't you guys fly into much worse weather than that on purpose?

Anyway, I usually work hard to keep http://www.longislandaviation.info up to date with blog-style posts on air show updates. I started doing that because nobody else was - for the first few airshows, information was scattered all over the 'net, so I just gathered it all in one convenient location. However, things have changed since then, and the official website, this forum, and Air Show Buzz are now excellent sources of information. As long as the first post in this thread stays up to date, I'm thinking I might as well just post a link straight to here. The effort I put in seems redundant, and I may not even have the time to keep up with everything (you know, the whole finding-a-job-after-graduation thing ain't easy these days).

What are your thoughts - will keeping my website active be a help or hinderance to the general populace? Please respond in a PM, I'd rather not hijack this thread.

from what i heard from the golden knights after it was all over, sean tucker did the same when he made like a helicopter and cleared a LZ for the knights to jump into.

Sean Tucker is a riot and his daughters, or at least what I beleive to be his daughters were total smoke shows. Pizza and wine on Sean's dime last year. Right before the tag of "Viper East" was branded. LOL Unfortuneately, it appaears I will not be present for this event as there is a strong chance I will be moving back to SRQ 3/4 time.

At first I panicked. I thought Memorial Day was the weekend before! Phew. Anyway, lets hope they can bring another awesome Demo team along. I would loved to see the B-1 of F-22 again.

As a huge Grumman fan, having an E-2 would be amazing as well.

Since the Blues will be there, I wouldn't count on a Super Hornet demo. Hope ACC provides two demos, but I don't think that'll happen... wouldn't mind seeing Zeke...

Oh and Ryan... I'm sure you're thinking of Sean's wife. His daughter was not at Jones Beach (she used to travel to a lot of shows but because of school she only does west coast shows). Great guy, though!

Man I wish it was show time already

I thought I was the only one who thought this way! I said something like "guess what is in 4 months?" to my wife, and when I told her "the air show" she shook her head and said I had issues.

Its a shame that this is the only air show in the area without having to drive 8 hours.

Derf

If you really want to talk about issues.... I usually only go home for a showers between Thursday and Sunday... by Sunday morning I am usually screaming at birds on an empty tarmac!! It is quite pathetic!

Here is one of those little bastards last year building a nest in the A-10
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/Aviation/2009-Jones-Beach-Airshow/IMG2678/548716161_GRfBD-L.jpg

the problem is that it gets too late to go home and you shot everything over and over and over and over and over...so you start trying crap that you know will not work like this
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/Aviation/2009-Jones-Beach-Airshow/IMG7672/548695209_RDR3k-L.jpg

Then the first people start showing up and you are tired as hell.

Requests for ACC demonstration teams, flyovers, aerial reviews, or F-22 static should be sent to ACC Aerial Events by December 31st of the previous year.

ACC Aerial Events will notify you if your event will be supported by ACC NLT:

-- January 15th for events planned from January through February.
-- January 31st for events planned in March.
-- February 15th for events planned from April through June.
-- April 30th for events planned from July through November

All other requests should be sent to individual units and/or MAJCOMs.

So the peeps at ACC already notified Jones Beach about who is going to make it or not. Now we just have to wait for the formal announcement.

While I enjoy the CF-18's, now we have 2 sets of F-18's. I would like to get some other aircraft other then F-18.

Well, with the Blues at Jones Beach, I suppose they want to spread out the demo teams.

Yeah, that makes sense...

Thanks

Usually there's no Navy TACDEMO at the same show site the Blue Angels are supposed to perform. There are exceptions to that rule, and this year there's quite a few Blue Angels shows that have Legacy or Super Hornet demos.

Can't wait to see what this year's CF-18 demo jet will look like... and in case you're wondering what the heck I'm talking about, I'll explain. The squadron who does the demos (since 2004, 3 Wing Bagotville does even years and 4 Wing Cold Lake does odd years) paints up one jet to do all of the demos. Before 2004, both wings did demos and painted up the entire jet, to some extent, reflecting some sort of anniversary (20 years of Hornets, anniversary of the respective province, TMOTA, etc.). From 2004 onwards, only the tails of the CF-18s were painted. In 2009, the demo Hornet was painted up in a special blue and gold paint paint scheme reflecting 100 years of powered flight in Canada. I've included a bunch of pictures of past demo jets:

Can't say who told me, since I believe the schedule isn't official (there are some dates that show "either xxx or xxx" for the location).

I do believe that Jones Beach will only get one ACC demo and a 50/50 chance of a Heritage Flight. Keep in mind ACC was subject to a massive budget cut and judging from the March schedule, some show sites who usually get two ACC demos at their shows only got one... and half of those shows got Heritage Flights! ACC, between 2004 and 2009, used to pay for the Heritage Flight pilot's appearance but is not doing that for 2010 - it's up to the show site to pay the HF pilot.

A few of the shows I usually attend (Andrews, Atlantic City, Oceana) usually are fair game for at least two ACC demos, and this year they may only get one. We'll see...

The ACC Demo is a single ship flight demonstration conducted by one of several aircraft - F-15, F-16, F-22, A-10. Heritage Flight is a formation of one or more current aircraft joined by one or more warbirds making a series of flybys.

There are NO Tomcats flying (outside of Iran) and no plans to sell any of those in AMARC to civilian operators to put on the airshow circuit. Laws governing the ownership of former military aircraft don't make it easy either - most of the more recent vintage military jets you see in civilian hands came from foreign sources, not the USAF or USN. Even if you jump through all the hoops and get one, operating costs will be astronomical. I wouldn't expect to see any of the aircraft on your list operated as "warbirds".

Derf
2010-03-01, 08:55 AM
I think the F-16 can down the road and possibly an F-18 but no others for all the same reason the Moose stated. The operational cost would be very high but there is a private F-4...that is the only reason I say the F-16 and F-18 are possible, but not probable. The others I would classify as NOT A CHANCE IN HELL.

F-14 would need an overthrow of the goverment of IRAN....aww, who the hell am I kidding...NOT A CHANCE IN HELL...BUT I CAN DREAM!

In 2004 (the first show) we had the S-3 Viking Demo (2 aircraft) which was great, especially since these have all now been retired. I for one would love to see Northrup-Grumman bring in a E-2 Hawkeye and EA-6B to due some fly-by's as part of the pre-show activities. I'm sure with their contacts they could make that happen?

There was a letter from AMARC that was posted on WIX (And I think was linked to here?) about an inquiry into the remaining F-14's. The letter stated that only ONE F-14 remains at AMARC (for the planned USS JFK museum), and all other F-14's have been scrapped. So I guess that means the VF-213 and VF-31 D's that flew there in 2006 are gone? That is very depressing!

Doesn't it make you wonder if anybody outside the NAVY really knows how good the F-14 really was or what it was really capable of with all the effort that has been made to keep even the smallest of parts from somehow reaching the Iranian Airforce?

I am so glad I got to see them fly a few times and the final time. Two days before Felix 101 flew for the last time, on her return to Long Island I fell out of a tree and could hardly walk. My wife was like "What are you doing? And where are you going?" No way was I mising that last flight. What a plane.

And I agree I wish Grumman would put a little push to get some of their flying hardware to come to the show. Even a flyby would be great. The E2C Hawkeye at Atlantic City was great. So was the one that came into Republic a while back.

Less than three months to go.............................

I am only speaking from past experience from other shows and the schedule the Blue Angels and their team normally follow for most air shows.

The Tuesday before the air show, in this case, 5/25, the number 7 plane, usually comes in to set things in motion for the teams arrival.

Generally the Team and Fat Albert transit to the air show site the Thursday morning before the air show, in this case 5/27. They then do some media flights and have practice Thursday afternoon.

They will do media flights and photo flights generally Friday morning, in this case 5/28 and then fly another practice Friday afternoon.

Also I don't know when it falls this year but usually during Jones Beach Air Show week is the Naval Academy graduation in Annapolis Maryland and the Blue Angels have in the past flown down to do a fly over from Republic on Friday morning.

As far as the military arrivals and civilian acts their arrival is unknown but generally by Thursday everyone has flown into Republic.

Hope this helps.

They start arriving the week before the airshow, like Fred said. Take it from those of us who live/work at the airport for the last few years. These aircraft are coming from other airshows around the country, so they cant come any sooner. The civilian performers usually come in the week before, they get a lot of exposure that way.

Got some clarification on some earlier rumors. There will not be a Spitfire on Memorial Day weekend - it will be at the museum on Labor Day weekend, part of activities marking the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

There will, however, be two Corsairs on hand. In addition to "Skyboss", the AAM's Corsair, Tom Duffy will bring his Corsair, "Marine's Dream" to the air show. Both will be doing double duty that weekend - there will be a "Corsairs Over Connecticut" air show in Stratford, CT over the holiday weekend as well. Both Corsairs will be based out of FRG - they will fly over the beach Saturday morning, then fly to Stratford for the afternoon, returning to FRG Saturday evening. On Sunday, they will repeat the same schedule.

AKA .. common folk with decent cameras are not welcome. This really annoys me.
What do you consider a "decent camera"?

History Under the Stars is a special event, something the museum and its volunteers go out of their way to make happen. As much as we would like to invite everyone, safety, logistics, and operational considerations force us to limit participants. There are a few different ways we could have done that - we could take the first 12 who respond, we could pull names out of a hat or Fred and I could select all our friends - of course that would still leave us another 10 spots to fill

Instead, to make this fair and equitable, and to keep with the special nature of the evening, we are asking potential participants to show a sample of their work, and to provide a list of where that work is displayed (in print, on a personal website, on JP.net or A.net, etc.) There are a few reasons for this. With a limited number of spots available, we want to offer them to photographers who have some level of experience, especially with night photography. As much as I like to talk about photography and help new photographers, this can't be a night to learn about your camera or how to take night photos - with the limited schedule we just don't have time for that. Also, the museum is gracious enough to allow us out on their ramp after hours, with volunteers who have been working 10 to 12 hours at that point - and at no charge. In exchange, they ask that we use the event to help promote the museum, hence the request for information about where your photos appear.

You may be put off by Fred's note of "no point and shoot cameras", and maybe that isn't the best way to phrase it, but too often "P&S" means "snapshots". If you have high quality work from a point and shoot, especially night photos, by all means send us a link to your work and let us see it. You will be evaluated on the quality of your work and your level of visibility.

And so you don't think I'm all talk, here are my galleries from the past three years...

Puckstopper has opened a can of worms here but maybe something positive can come of this. I can't help but notice that some of the participants of the last 3 years or so could step aside so other deserving photogs could get a crack at this very special once in a lifetime thing. I made a half hearted attempt last year to do this but was chosen and attended. This year I am not entering my name for consideration and I would think that a few others that have been chosen every year and enjoyed a lot of great shots of those same warbirds would do the same. In fact I am going to have a dialogue with Fred and hope he will allow me to make some suggestions for other photogs that more than deserve this special evening. If I am free and in NY I would love to attend the dinner and catch up with some of you but I won't be brining my camera. The spotting Gods have been more than generous to me and many of others here. It's time to give back to the hobby. I hope some of you step up.

Moose said it better than I ever could,

If you take great artsy night shots with a point and shoot you could be
accepted. It is more the quality of work. If you think your work is that
good there is nothing stopping you from entering with some night shots,
The one thing I learned very quick is there is always an exception to
every rule. But with point and shoot cameras there generally not enough
light for this type of equipment as I understand because I have used
point and shoot and cameras limited with 16 seconds of exposure.

For this event we will only invite 6 previously accepted entries and 6
new in order to keep it going. If I wanted, I could just call 10 of my
friends and take them out on the ramp as I could be the escort. With
this event we are trying to make it available to those who do not have
access I do, We are trying..... This is the best we can do

I had the exact same thoughts. For you who have not yet attended and want to submit, History Under the Stars is to me, the most serene and one of the most awesome aviation photography experience I've ever had. The airfield is so quiet, and you're so close to these old ships, you can feel the history in them. For that evening, you almost become one with them, and I encourage everyone to try to attend at least once. Fred, and the good folks at the AAM put a real boatload of work into this event and it shows. You won't regret one second of it. So, on that note, count me in for dinner too and hopefully, I'll see you for the nighttime shootout next year!

Way to go Kenny! I know what you mean. When Sentimental Journey was at IFP I was able to go in her and around her anytime I wanted. Sometimes it was with people around and one night myself and Dave Budd did a sunset night shoot with her. We were the only two people on the whole airfield. Even though she didn't see combat you got the feeling while standing inside her where the waist gunners did of that these planes mean to us and our freedom. I also felt how blessed I was to be able to be in the media flight and to hear her and watch those engines start. Not many spotters get these chances to do this and if my staying out means a new spotter can get near Yankee Lady I felt I have given a little back. Who else is going to make this sacrifice?

There are going to be lots of warbirds at the show - the Airpower Museum has a whole hangar full that will be in the show - P-40, P-47, Corsair, TBM Avenger, C-47, B-25, L-39. There is also going to be a B-17, a second Corsair, a few T-6s, a Mustang or two...is that enough warbirds for you?

Out of everything, something about the A-10 landing at FRG just gives me chills. So much has changed, and yet the plane back on the same runway it made its first flight from is really cool. Heck, the company who built it is no longer around.

while I love the old War Birds, nothing is as cool as the roar from a jet, or the delayed roar if its going fast enough! For me the highlight of my plane spotting career was the F-14 at FRG a few years back.

BTW, my comments about the photo op were simply a combination of me being jealous and my sheer amazement. I do not have 1/100th of the photo taking skill that you all do, but the opportunity to just be with, around, in, these planes in such a calm quiet environment is amazing.

Keep in mind that if you take all of the jets the team has, I believe the Blues have something like twelve jets. Having five go down is not the end of the world for them... the maintainers strive to do everything they can to get the six needed to do each and every demonstration.

Back at the ranch...
The additional aircraft are kept back at their home base - they will be swapped in and out of the formation as needed for scheduled maintenance, unscheduled repairs, and the like. They travel to shows with the 6 primary jets (single seaters) as well as 2 spares (at least one being a two-seater that is used for media flights).

Doubt it. Steve Holtzinger would be more proper to answer that though. That kid can tell you what a flight lead from a Guard unit in Montana had for breakfast on Thursday. Normally though this close in you won't see too many more mil jet's added. I would love to see one more added though. Eagle or Viper preferrably

HAHA Ryan.

Seriously though, Moose hit it right on the nose. I've been to the last two Blue Angels Homecoming Airshows and have seen at least two spare Hornets in the team's hangar. I'm hoping this year I can get a tour of the hangar and all!

I honestly think the lineup is solidified. Yankee Lady will also be making an appearance, if it hasn't already been mentioned. Would be nice to see a C-17 demo but I don't think it'll happen.

Chris S

Yes, it looks like all the ACC military demos are set for Jones Beach,
especially since the Air Force will be celebrating "Air Force Week" in NYC
later on in August at the Coney Island Air show. Besides the Thunderbirds,
F-18, and Harrier Demos already on the schedule for Coney Island show,
I'm hearing you can also expect to see the A-10 Demo added to the line-up
along with a couple of other Air Force aircraft flybys including the F-22 !!

Here's the recent Air Force announcement about "Air Force Week" in NYC:

Hello everybody. Just found this site today when doing my annual look for any & all info on the Jones Beach airshow :D There is going to be a Coney Island show as well?! WooHoo!

I was REALLY hoping to see the F-22 again this year... that show was amazing when it was here in '08. To me, it's not the prettiest plane to look at, but man can it perform/maneuver! And its' LOUD!! I want to hear more 'Thunder' at this show :borat:

I live very near to AAM/Republic & pass by frequently. I volunteered one summer at AAM back in '05, it was a great experience. I often wonder what it would have been like 60 years ago to hear squadrons of freshly built planes flying overhead... sigh. I miss the F-14 as well, I lived out in Baiting Hollow briefly & was right in the flight-path of when they would test planes from the Grumman facility in Riverhead... I loved that :).

You guys have some amazing pictures posted here & in the links you've provided. It sound like some of you are the pilots on some of the warbirds hosted in the area? I want to learn to fly, and have taken a few lessons, but I never seem to have both the time & the money at the same time, lol. Someday I hope to have the extra $$ to get a B-17 flight, that would be awesome!

Anyway, nice to read all of your posts & hope to see you around!

That's a different Matt Chapman. The Matt Chapman you are thinking of is from Sydney Australia who is the Crew Chief for the ASB.TV Extra 330. The Matt Chapman (http://www.mattchapman.com/pilot.html) that is coming to the Jones Beach Airshow is a US aerobatic pilot who fly's on behalf of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

There is a mistake on JBAS official website... Ed Hamill - Air Force Reserve Biplane Show - its actually not AIR FORCE RESERVE any more... I don't know details but looks like AFR will not sponsor Ed Hamill anymore... its a huge surprise...

and one more mistake... Captain Johnnie Green from the A10 East Demo Team.. not Captain anymore... promoted 2 months ago... Major now :P

chrisparypa
2010-04-08, 06:31 PM
Looks like he will be in Andrews this year so he may do JBAS also cuz its not to far from Andrews and the show is 2 weeks later... fance check is not saying anything about it, but this year is little weird, lots of performers didn't post full schedules yet, which is weird cuz usually in the middle of march they all have everything ready for the season with maybe couple open dates.... Ed Hamill usually posting his schedule jan-feb, Matt Chapman also, now they all not sure where and when they will fly :) Hope to see some clear situation for the May and jun at least. I also noticed that Military Demos, fly bys and heritage flights schedule looks like "not finished yet", can u believe that we will not see demos of at least one: F16, F15 or A10 in Andrews AIR FORCE base ??? I don't know whats going on :) But don't take me wrong for me they can schedule Cessna Skyhawk demo and I will be very happy :P Air Show is Air Show and I can't wait for the first one this year for me... Andrews AFB :)
