US Airways (NYSE: LCC) announced today that Capt. Chesley "Sully” Sullenberger, who piloted Flight 1549 during its emergency water landing on the Hudson River in January, is returning to work in a new role as a management pilot. In addition to his flying duties, Capt. Sullenberger will join the US Airways flight operations safety management team.

"We welcome Capt. Sullenberger back to work and are proud to have him flying with us again as a member of the US Airways safety management organization,” said Chairman and CEO, Doug Parker. "US Airways is an industry leader when it comes to safety and Sully is an excellent addition to the team.”

"The months since January 15 have been very full, and my family and I have had some unforgettable experiences,” said Capt. Sullenberger. "However, I have missed working with my colleagues at US Airways and I am eager to get back in the cockpit with my fellow pilots in the months ahead. In my new role, I will continue to be the same kind of advocate for aviation safety that I have been for several decades.”

There will be a separate media advisory once the details of Capt. Sullenberger’s return to flight are confirmed. A pre-announcement of his return will be posted on Twitter @usairwaysnews. Further information about his return, or details about media access, are not available at this time.

Any idea why it takes so long for him to return to the flying duty? What has he done at the meantime -- press interviews and writing his book?

Sculley & Skiles will fly US 1427 LGA-CLT 01OCT according to Yahoo Finance.

As previously said Sully's first flight will be US 1427/01 OCT LGA-CLT departing LGA at 1259PM and Jeff Skiles will be the FO. The original plan was to fly 1437, the 1445 CLT departure as Sully wanted to complete the last flight he flew that never reached its destination, but scheduling conflicts caused the changed to the 1259 departure. Their will be press events in both LGA and CLT, if anyone wants to attend at 1100 Thursday at LGA it will be accessible, lower level baggage claim area to the right of carrosel 3. I cant make any promises about meeting Sully their but it might be possible. Im sure you will be able to view it and all the network news on Thursday nite.

Regards

The real reason it's been so long until his return to the cockpit - he was making a movie!

They did not get that right. As of when I left work tonight(We.) the flight was booked at capacity F12 Y114. NOT overbooked. But you can bet it will be full.

I just saw Ron on TV! Fox news is there live and when Rick walked in on camera Ron was right there! Awesome! Ron tell Sully he has my respect on one of the greatest examples of airmanship!

Turns out Scully was actually in the captain's seat on flight 1050, he wasn't just a passenger. 1549 first officer Jeff Skiles was his co-pilot.

Warning: kooks on board.

"I feel like I'm flying with angels," said Linda Culbertson, 68, of Leicester, N.C...."What a great omen. I mentioned him in my prayers last night. I told God I hoped I would get a pilot as good as Sully. This is an answer to my prayers," she said. "He can handle anything. I'm afraid of water, but if we go in the water, he'll rescue me."

Wonder if anyone took odds on the same thing happening again today?

1549 happened five days before Obama's inauguration, in the euphoric days when much of the nation believed he was a savior riding in on a unicorn to save the country (including airliners in distress) and would soon have his visage chiseled into Mount Rushmore. The painting is poking fun at those people. Or something. :)

The artist has a whole collection of Obama on a Unicorn paintings, as well as various people with pancakes on their heads. A lot of them are pretty funny. http://www.faithmouse.com/obama_unicorns.html

wow, 5 days to Obama's Inauguration? I guess I never realized they were so close!

But makes sense, I recall Sully went down on Thursday, Obama went up on Tuesday.

Didn't US Airways retire AWE1549 after the incident? Were they going to bring the flight number back for the day?

Great shots, emshighway. This morning was quite a thrill for me and it was great seeing Sully and Jeff again. For those interested in this story I would expect a lot of coverage on this evening local and national news. The amount of press their this morning was really impressive to say the least, most I have ever seen at LGA.

Cheers

Thanks, I was assigned as escort for the crew. The shot I fought to get was Sully back in the left seat and I was able to get it. I tried to get Sully and Jeff but it just became too crazy and with the CEO aboard they had to push back on time.

It was a great experience. Both Sully and Jeff and true gentlemen.

Well, his new role has "manager" in the title, maybe he wanted to clarify that he's still in the union and not actually joining the enemies in management. (Or maybe all tags have that thing on them, I dunno).

All the pilots I saw today there had the same ID holders. May be just the way the holders.

The few minutes I got to talk to him I definitely got the sense that principles are of great importance to him.

A few things I wanted to mention was some where dissapointed when they found out he actually flew two flights on Sept 11th and today was not his actual first trips. Because of the amount of time he did not fly after the completetion of his retraining/recertification he flew a CLT-ATL roundtrip in the left seat with a check airman in the right seat making sure he was ready for the line. So today was his first trip on his own without being evaluated and observed. Prior to today I was not aware of this and also I was under the impression they would deadhead in on 1050 this morning and only actually fly 1427, they ended up flying both.

Also today I met Barry Leonard, one of the more frequently interviewed 1549 passengers when the crew and some passengers where making the TV rounds. Mr Leonard was and is still is a Chairmans Preferred Customer, the highest elite level at US. His companies ( he is the CEO) main two offices are in CLT and NYC and he said he has made 69 flights since Jan 15th. Some may remember him as the one who jumped from the L1 door into the water prior to the slide inflating and was one of the most injured of the passengers from his contact with the bulkhead during the landing. This gentleman is one very cool and down to earth CEO, and has been a very vocal pro US supporter which is I wanted to and did say Thank You to him. He changed his plans to fly today on 1427 as he wanted to fly with Sully and Jeff and the gate agents where even able to do a little rearranging and got him the same seat he had on 1549, 1C as he thought that would be fitting.

Thanks for your interest and support folks !

I don't know if 1050 was planned. I thought I heard something about the 1050 crew stepping a side to let Sully and Jeff take the controls but I didn't hear the old conversation so they could have been about something else.

I believe this was more about completing the flight from LGA-CLT than his first flight.

I spoke to Mr. Leonard and was trying to get a shot for him with Sully and Jeff but it didn't work out.

it's a union thing, and started right around the USA/AWE merger. it's actually a separate piece of plastic.

Those were great photos. Thank you so much for sharing these. This must have been an awsome day for you folks there. I heard the flight went out with one open seat(maybe lga777 can cfm or deny) & darn it I almost came up there to give it try but figured I didn't have a chance.

Some one asked about the union pilot badge, I see a lot of our pilots wearing them so I'm guessing it's up to the crew member.

Re: The ID holders, they are not mandatory, just a union thing some guys like to wear. If you look around, some (ex) America West pilots have similar ones, except they say 'Cactus Pilot' on them, sort of a sign of support type of thing I guess.
