Hi everyone!

I'm new to the site :borat: and was thinking about coming to New York to go spotting during the UN General Assembly week, and was wondering what would be the best days to go?

Also, am I in the right forum? I did a search and didn't see any threads on this topic for 2009

Thanks in advance!

-Wendy :)

Welcome aboard, Wendy! Based on the UN calendar, and past history, I would expect the bulk of VIP arrivals on the weekend of Sept 19-20. The session itself opens on Tuesday, Sept. 15, but the high level meetings and general debate begin on Tuesday, Sept. 22. In the past, those are the sessions the various heads of state attend. I'm sure we will have a big crowd out that weekend for some spotting.

Welcome, Wendy! I am looking forward to a good UN season!

UN Week does work well in this forum, as it pertains to aircraft visitors, though it euqally might fit into spotting Planning. We'll keep it here since this is where it's at.

Thanks for the replies guys!! :borat:

So it seems that the bulk of the arrivals will be coming on a Saturday and Sunday (19th and 20th). I was planning on staying up there for 2 nights, so do you think it would be better to be there for Friday or Monday (in addition to the weekend). Like which day would everyone think would have more international VIP traffic arriving?

Any recommendations for cheap places to stay the night around JFK?

Wendy

Cheapest I have found when I've been up there is the Days Inn JFK ran about $115/night.

IIRC, 22R is to be closed again in September? If so, this should mean even more 13L action.

We can count on 5A-ONE visiting again this year. Gadaffi will be addressing the General Assembly.

If you dont need a particular hotel at the airport I would priceline a hotel and name my own price

maestra80

Thanks for the hotel suggestions! Out of curiosity, are there any hotels at JFK that are comparable to the Renaissance hotel that overlooks ATL??

Also, what is 5A-ONE?? I looked up 5A and it said Alpine Air Express (??) but that Gadaffi dude is from Libya??

5A-ONE is the registration of Col. Kadaffi's ride, an A340:

Wow if 5A-ONE is coming I'm definitely going! ..to JFK that is. Somehow, someway even if I have to take the subway (like I did years ago) haha. No matter if I have to sleep near the approach to 31R or 13L? Over $100 a night.. I'm cheap so priceline is a better idea I'd say

What do you all think is the chance any other of these African "dudes" will show up in a 707 this year?

If Gadaffi is staying in NJ, it's possible 5A-ONE will go to Newark.

maestra80
2009-08-25, 04:11 PM
Oops, hehehe:) I didn't realize 5A-ONE was the plane's registration. That is one sweet-looking plane though. Hopefully it doesn't end up going to EWR...

Would be cool to get a heads up beforehand. I'm sure many of you already have it but for me it'd be a really exotic one. The smaller bizjets or A320 types not in airline paintscheme that will come in, I do not really care about.

any information on which heads of states or governments will be visiting?

My theory is with Obama as POTUS all these African/ME heads of states will be coming being it's his first year in office. Does my idea make any sense, yes no maybe? :borat:

Most heads of state come to the UN for the GA week, I believe.

By the way, It'd be great to join up with others for some spotting -- I also don't have a car, and would love to be able to bum a ride from someone. Thanks in advance.

Gadaffi is not staying in NJ. The snobs of Englewood complained too loudly!

Ahmedinijad is here 9/21 to 9/25 according to http://raheazadi.com/1388/06/18/call-in ... -phonemap/ (http://raheazadi.com/1388/06/18/call-intercontinental-barclay-hotel-in-ny-hosting-ahmadinejad-coup-gang-for-un-meeting-to-complain-phonemap/)

I'll be out at JFK on the Saturday and Sunday 9/19-9/20. Hope to catch up with the usual crowd then! If anyone needs a ride from the Jersey Shore PM me and I'll be glad to assist!

The only two new types for me this VIP week thus far.
I felt like I was in a winnebago open house today.
Arrivals have been going on for several days now and I only have gotten this corporate Garbage as new catches for me. At the rate things are going I won't even bother with a UNGA recap summary. Things are getting worse and worse every year.
The Gainjet 757-200 was flying for Ivory Coast and the Comlux A318 Jordan.

It is confusing where these visitors will be staying. I see the flag of Libya flying in front of the Plaza Hotel this week yet the president of Libya is not staying there. I used to think that a flag in front of a hotel indicated that the head of government is a guest there but evidently this is untrue.

..was so hoping Afriqiyah, Iran, and MEA would come in YESTERDAY while I was still there! That's it I'm pulling my hairs out!!! ;)

I just had the feeling they would show up at JFK Tuesday, oh well. Standing around in one spot for hours is unbearable to me but catching the only 3 planes I cared about from yesterday: Ethiopian, Turkmenistan and especially Ukrania IL-62 -a dream catch- made it all worthwhile!

Hopefully something really good in airline colors shows up like Royal Brunei, Vietnam or Cameroon. The Russian State transport Illushins would've been great too. Darn G20...

Beautiful shots, keep 'em coming :borat:

The French and Czech AF took off around 8pm on 31L almost after each other and passed by us while we taxied out on a DL MD80 back to Orlando. Czech had the cabin lights on, but looked empty.

ps: I agree with Senga the Turkmenistan new scheme couldn't be more boring, IMO green color saves it from being total crap. 707 N88ZL used to be trackable, now its blocked from flightaware. But i thought that one was not rare at JFK

I took my annual VIPweek trip up to SWF to see what is there that I need. I had all of but for this time. This I got 4 new countries I don't have registrations for.
Totally awsome was the Tchad/Chad Government MD-87 (TT-ABC) yes its spelled with a T.
Other new planes:
Swedish Air Force Gulfstream 024
Government Monaco Government* 3A-MGA
Croatia Government Challenger 9A-CRO

So far the Thad Government MD-87 is the highlight for me.
This is stuff is a lot better than the Garbage I have been shooting at JFK over the last few days.
The Tchad MD-87 was going to be leaving soon.

Motorcade Madness on the Upper east side especially today. We were on the patio of our job watching one motorcade come down
Lex Avenue in traffic, sirens wailing and Suburbans cutting off cars and agents hanging out windows. You can tell how important the

Wendy,
For me its about 1 hour. I always enjoy it especially during the fall months, I take Route 9 all the way up to I-84 and then go west to SWF. It takes me into the mountains unlike I-87.

Gerard,
Yea I had a few close calls myself over the years. I have a habit of shooting VIP planes and SOMEHOW getting stuck smack dab it the middle of the convoys. I hate it when that happens.

Been in about an hour now from a fantastic day out spotting UN jets! Thanks to Garry who did the logging, while I took the left seat and drove..
Our first stop was Wappinger Falls/Dutchess County. Gee - since we have driven by the exit off the highway many times, and as we were running earlier than previous years we took the detour. Nice to put 50 or so tin in the book.. Every little helps!

From there it was a quick drive to SWF..

Well what a bumper haul there was today! Stewart certainly didnt disappoint with the following:

http://photosbygeoff.fotopic.net/p61155512.html

OD-MEB A330 MEA
9K-ALD A310 Kuwait
9K- Gulfstream Kuwait
3A-MGA Da900 Monaco
http://photosbygeoff.fotopic.net/p61155510.html
9A-CRO Challenger Croatia
http://photosbygeoff.fotopic.net/p61155509.html
7T-VJX A330 Air Algerie
7T- Gulfstream
024 Gufstream Swedish Govt plus a second!
102 Tu154 Poland
EZ-A700 767 Turkmenistan
Chilean Govt 767
5A-ONE A340 Libyan Govt
5A-IAY A300 Libyan Govt
Z-..F B767 Air Zimbabwe
http://photosbygeoff.fotopic.net/p61155511.html
29000 VC25 USAF
plus a host of others - but my notebook is still in the car! Lets not forget the C130 and C5s over the military side of the base. Should be some new ones in that lot too!

After Stewart, me and Garry drove to TEB, to see if anything was there.. Actually plenty of foreigners in the mix, including G- C- PT- XA- EC- OY- VP- and HB- plus of course the usual cast of characters and residents.

Lunch, fuel (at 2.39/gall it would be rude not too!) and a drive by was all we had time for today, because we wanted to see what delights were down at Newark.. A couple of VP- on the biz ramp, along with normal N traffic wasnt too disappointing, but as there was nothing else spectacular and we were pushing towards rush hour it was time to cut bait and head east to JFK!

Any evidence of UN traffic was lacking (when we were there), but we still did a ride around the terminals on the airtrain with VT-ALH the newer of Air India's 777s being one of the more interesting frames!

After a quick break in the old Pan Am terminal, (the one that had the car park on top where you could spot from) gosh it looks so tatty in there, Garry and I left JFK for our last port of call, Republic (FRG) in the hopes of scoring the Czech airbus which I understood was there. After battling the rush hour traffic we arrived at FRG with about 50 mins daylight left. Sadly the Czech bus wasn't around, but a big surprise was TC-ANA. Very smart scheme, making up the for the loss of the OK-. The other pleasant moment was seeing the IL62 overhead on finals to JFK at approx 630pm.. Reg anyone?

After logging the spam parked on the ramp outside the restaurant Garry and I did the perimeter tour logging what could be seen. Republic is an airport we need to visit when we aren't rushing around the tri state area!

So all in all an excellent day, although the car did block its copy book when it refused to start at FRG. Despite a jump start from a man in a van the Saturn seemed like it wasn't going to fire up! Fifteen minutes and a little coercion, we were back in action and ready for the 200 mile trip home!

Today has been one of the best spotting days I have had in a while! :D

great summary Pinkstristar. Most planes at SWF are too cluttered to be shootable no?

IL-76 very nice :borat:

There are only a few where a reasonable picture can be taken, as seen by the Zimbabwe and A6- 737 that I posted last night. The other aircraft were either parked behind buildings - such as the Polish Tu154 :-( or too far away.. The Algerian, and Libyan buses were parked near the fuel farm and I would seriously suggest not pulling out a camera to try for a photo in that area!!!! (I do have a photo of 5A-ONE at Logan so I wasnt overly bothered I couldnt get one yesterday!).

The Swedish Biz, like the Monaco and Croation were against the chainlink, so werent in the best positions either..

Since I also take the tailnumbers, being unable to photograph too many of the airliners wasnt the huge disappointment it may be for someone who's priority IS the photo!

Regards, and thanks for the kind words folks!

Hi pinktristar, I would've jumped the fence and "streaked naked on the ramp" to get a picture of 5A-ONE

just kidding

As far as regs go, those can found later. The Zimbabwe 767 was Z-WPF as seen from the underside of the wings when it took off from JFK

* INTERESTING VIP ALERT *

Someone posted hearing a transmission of TZ-TAC, Mali govt. 707, possibly arriving this afternoon or early evening to ...JFK? Unfortunately no titles and a rather boring BBJ-style livery with N88ZL-like nacelles. But still a 707. Possibly something that can make Senga happier after another "depressing" UNGA session LOL

NO TZ-TAC on my watch.. It would be shameful for me to even HOPE I could get something by chance or just by showing up like others do.
The only thing I managed to pull off today was a "Modified" livery on the Russian IL-76. I shot it 2 times in years back but this time the Aeroflot titles are removed and they placed a small Decal on the tail.
The only new thing for me today was a Small Roundel on the tail of a Russian IL-76.
The Second shot is the IL-76 at JFK a few years back in full Aeroflot colors. I still LOVE IL-76s and never get used to hearing those screaming engines.
Oh well maybe better luck tomorrow.

A spectacular day with Moose, Eric and Sebastian.

Began at 0930. I put my son in the car and look to the sky over Huntington, seeing a 4 engined jet.....odd stripes, too bulky to be a 340. I think the II 96 just cruised over my house!

My curse when it comes to UN week is that

a) I rarely go. (You actually have to go to see planes ;) )

b) Russian jets are always seen at 7000 feet, no closer for me.

But my son is a lucky charm. Finally I saw the Il- 96 and Il-62 but a bonus Il-76 that I never thought I would see in a lifetime. And got some sweet shots!

More importantly, I chased my boy around, a good day, boys day out!

Sorry to hear the hunt for the 707 didn't pay off Senga. I know you work hard to catch the rare planes (well worth it IMO) and your efforts usually pay off. It's possible that it went to another airport first for whatever reason and could show up at JFK later, hopefully.

Did the Algerian Air Force A340-500 ever show up and was shootable? I thought that could be new for you guys

Was told the Ruskie IL-76 was originally in last Friday after dark so didn't even get to see it, maybe next year...

No only the A330 showed up along with the Gulfstream for Algeria.
Both went to SWF.
As you know I already have this very frame in 2 other operators colors so it would have been a minor catch. I didn't go to DC when it was there as already have the frames 2 times woudl have had a minimal pay off after driving that far.
C/N 21049
The first time I shot it was before it was re-engined as P4-TBN. Later it flew for Togo as 5V-TGE and now for Mali as the TZ-TAC.

At 1409, 3 choppers suddenly flew over my head yesterday. One chopper had tandem rotors like a Chinook. They flew low but sadly I had no camera. I was at Battery Park by the promenade. The 3 choppers quickly headed west towards JFK. Then at 1413, another 2 choppers passed overhead. These headed-out over the East River then turned north towards LGA. I am pretty sure that 1 of the choppers was Marine One while the others were decoys. I wonder what the other choppers were hauling.

Those are the most Beautiful shots of AF1 I've ever seen! The blue on the plane looks even better next to the dark blue water, wow. Instead of the official fly-by photo which cost thousands and scared the crap out of everyone who has no clue about airplanes, they could've just used Moose's air-to-air banking photo!

NY-Mario, I'm pretty sure the IL-76 is normally banned at US civilian airports because it's not stage III compliant, except for special government, UN, disaster relief flights, and such (the ones being re-engined with PS-90s are ok).
There should be -STRICT- noise regulations for cars blasting crappy loud music on the streets, not aircraft. Aircraft have always made noise and smoked. Back in the 70s people were just happy they could fly on jets, someone please remind Nimbys and GreenPiss.

Senga, the colors on the Togo govt. you shot is way more interesting, and looks almost civilian instead of corporate. The current paintscheme on that 707 makes it look like stupid BBJ or Airbii corporate jet, and you know how much I hate them  :D

Sweet shots, especially the Gambian 727! NY airports might not be the easiest places to shoot at, but there are some good angles even when the action is kind of far. My local airports in Florida are "easy" but then you always get pretty much the same angles from the official photos spots and the traffic is blah. I miss NY

Gordon, terrific shots! If you are away at college next year, I'd be glad to go out on the ramp and shoot in your place! :D

As to the Turkish 319 at FRG - I've seen it there for at least 4 years now, and I've never seen any security around it - it's usually just buttoned up at the end of the Sheltair ramp. You may have seen Airport Ops driving by.

diegodangers,
I noticed they had more problems with that plane today. They had some problem with the they aircraft communications today and had problems trying to read back the clearance. And then the controllers complained about them not hearing transmissions directed at the pilot. I guess they never fixed this particular problem. Someone flew in a helicopter right next to the CRJ7 and then loaded up and left. I did shoot some Venezuelan Falconjets at JFK a few days ago. I wonder is he was on those.

Glad you feel that way Tom,
I suppose the Conviasa is a good one to get being that they don't even service the US.
You got that right...I am glad UNGA is over too this year. What a complete waste.

Since I've never posted pictures of mine in a public site before I will take the opportunity to spam this thread with some of them, but first I have to say it was great being there to catch special UN and regular JFK traffic such as Olympic Airways -RIP- and meeting so many fellow photographers. (A especial thanks to Moose and Bill for the ride to the photo locations)

Kenny: some of your 'creative thoughts' were hilarious. You should make a tape of your various thoughts for when the traffic is slow 8) Glad you were able to bag a 707... and the girl giving you a peace sign with dad smiling :borat:

Tom: I hope to see you at the Miami geek fest too. I'd love to see some of your NY slides from back in the day!

Not sure if it's the same one - there was more than one IL-62, but some of them were Russian, not Ukrainian - but I caught UR-86528 arriving on Monday afternoon.

Mario, if I may say so, you and Wendy went home with quite a collection! It was great meeting and hanging with the both of you for a few days. I hope we all get to do it again soon.

Hope to get together sometime soon and great to meet you after all these years Phil! The traffic at JFK was impressive, BUT we brought you guys the good weather :borat: (this Borat smiley rules)

Geoff, they were taken at different sites around JFK some of them from very far away with a so-so Canon 300 mm lens (for JFK a decent 400mm works much better). The reg is indeed UR-86528, built almost 30 years ago in 1981! Usually, the one (maybe the only one) of the two Ukraine Air Enterprise IL-62s that's showed up at JFK during the last few UN sessions (looking at SengaB's annual log)

When I saw that one I almost did the Macarena. I don't expect the president of Ukraine to be showing up in a 28-year old IL-62 for much longer.

[color=#0040FF]Thanks Mayi! Really appreciate the reg - it was the only Il62 we saw.. Another one in the log book!

Shot I-Fly A310 today at JFK as Spotted it a few days ago at JFK so I do assume it is a UNGA Straggler like N767KS. The Virgin APU Destroyed my pik.

For today I already see a Mideast 767 and a Comlux A318 scheduled into JFK.

The Mideast 767, N767KS, is due into JFK from GVA at 11:12pm, however its due into SWF at 6:12 pm. Let's see what happens there.

1579910

The Comlux A318 is operating for Jordan and is listed as Royal Jordanian 3 inbound from SNN around 3:21pm.

1499842

I saw the Mideast 767 land around 3:30pm today at JFK from the Broad Channel North parking area. For some reason it seemed like it kept going back and forth around the old Pan Am maintenance/Tower Air hangars. I also saw the N88ZL Boeing 707 take-off as well. They really hush-kitted that machine didn't they? It doesn't have that 707 "scream" I remember from back in the late '70s early '80s.

What would bother me is the cargo stuff blocking engines and nosegear. You got it in new Oman Air colors, too bad HiFly is too lazy to put titles.

Here's HiFly's other A310 I told you about in old Oman Air c/s: CS-TEX, Sept. 17th at JFK
