Gibraltar Airport (which is not part of Spain as a lot of readers pointed out) is a very unusual airport. To my knowledge, it is the only one where the runway actually intersects with a major highway. When a plane has to take off or land, traffic is shut down.

Oh yeah its legit alright...crazy as it is. Think of it this way....we have to stop for train crossings...they stop for planes taking off and landing. lol

Why don't they just make an underpass?

That's crazy... How many departure/arrivals do they have daily? They must have a shorter runway for smaller traffic or something... Do they check for FOD before every arrival and departure???

I've been as well, a pretty crazy site.

The airport is not very active so traffic is not shut down too many times a day.

Probably not enough flights nor cars to make that worthwhile.

They also have monkeys walking around the streets there, so planes crossing roads is par for the weirdness:

The 1st Remark in the Jepp 10-9 page
"Main road crosses rwy at midpoint. Civil use PPR. Overflights of rwy below 500' require 4 minutes notice
for the road to be closed. Rwy 09 right-hand circuit."

The runway shows 6000x150 with 5509 usable for takeoff (civil)

I've been to Gibraltar a few times. Crappy place. There is only one road in & out of Gibralter and there is hardly any traffic into the airport.
