A change of plans

As most of you may or may not know, I was scheduled to leave for navy basic training today. As it turns out, I won't be. I have this medical condition that requires surgery, and I wouldn't be able to get through boot camp if I don't get this surgery done. The plan at this point is to get this thing taken care of asap. The deal with the navy is, if I'm all healed up by late August and given the doc's thumbs up, (which I may be), I can still ship to boot no problem. The real problem is that there's a good likelihood that I won't be. If that's the case, then the government would null my contract, and when I'm all healed up, I'd be able to re-enlist one year after I get the surgery done (which would be around this time next year). At that point, I'd have to wait around another few months like I've been doing these last couple of months to go to boot camp. So if that's the case (which it likely will be), I'm looking at leaving around September/October of 2010. The reason for such long waits is that the navy is currently 140% overmanned. If you're wondering why they're actually still taking recruits, your guess is as good as mine.

Anyway, the plan now is to find some work that offers medical insurance, as I'm not covered by my parent's insurance, being that I'm over 18 and not enrolled as a full-time student.

If you get a federal job (nothing big, lets say TSA Screener, ok don't laugh) you can use the time toward your military time. When you come out of the Navy and get another federal job all that time goes toward retirement.

Stay positive! When I was in the hospital, I was released early as my recovery went past, & then back to work about a month earlier than estimated, hopefully, the same will be for you.

As far a recruitment, percentages are for reference only as they have jobs to fill, the Navy can be 140% overmanned, but, certain fields can be understaffed.
