Does anybody remember Rwy 14/32 at JFK? I recall seeing landings there when I used to perch on Rockaway Blvd. in the 80's. It was sort of parallel to Rockaway Blvd. Suddenly, the runway was closed and it was turned into a taxiway. Does anybody remember in which year the runway closed and the reason for its closing? Maybe it was too close to arrivals on 31R.

It was used for commuter turboprops and GA aircraft. I remember Pan Am DHC-7's using it and maybe even the Pilgrim Twin Otters (Remember them???)

Actually I remember them when they had the green color scheme with the black Pilgrim hat on the tail.
When I was in High School (35 yrs ago), an early AM Pilgrim flight used to come directly over my house (on the north shore of Nassau) at 7:15 AM. It was heading directly south for JFK at about 1500 ft, I knew then it was time to walk out the door to be at school in time for classes.
I think this was the first fight of the day from New Haven.

I remember those too. I grew up in Elmont, and often saw them fly over en route to JFK.

Yes, I think I recall seeing Pilgrim too. I was standing on a hill by 22L off Rockaway Blvd back then. I was into only jumbos then so I paid no attention. You guys have good memories!

There was Pilgrim (I remember the green scheme as well), and Command and Suburban. Those were the commuter airlines serving JFK I can remember - the short time that New York Airways used fixed wing aircraft I seem to recall they used that runway as well, but I can't be sure.

It was still a runway when I worked at JFK ( '87-'92 )

There was also a runway for similar reasons at LGA 14-32 , It's now taxiway Echo. I would see Twin Otter's and smaller GA aircraft use it.

I never knew that LGA also had an additional runway, 14/32, too. This forum is great, as we are always learning by sharing our aviation knowledge.
