Nooooooo!

I might not be as angry if they weren't seriously talking about cutting ALL W service from Astoria too.

$1.99. Cheaper than Metrocards for most people actually.

...and that the $2 base fare could be boosted by $1 to $3."
now that's just WRONG! i don't take the subway on a daily basis (only when i need to go into the city), but if i have to pay $10 just to get to and from the city i might as well drive in and feed a meter.

Mario that Exxon station across from you was always much higher then anyone else. I think the scumbag was trying to screw ppl. What amazed me though was people were getting gas from him when they simply could have made a quick U turn and saved a few bucks. Eh people deserve it then.

As for the Metrocards.....glad I live on Long Island ;)

No joke, which is why we are driving in.

Actually Tom, that Exxon shop is very reasonable compared to the guy next door, in terms of service. The day before my wedding, my Buick had an antifreeze issue. Tons of $$. Also, for a flat tire to be replaces, tons of $$ (so they make up for the cheaper gas I suppose)

So I gas up next door and any repairs are across the street.

I agree with that, espeacialy that I dont drive. $3 is just too much. For one thing. People are going to hate paying more money on Subways and buses knowing that service is disrupted on the weekends and we are paying $3 for long travel to Manhattan because of the same track work. Give me a break. I rather spend more money on a cab than on the trains if thats the case. Its very sad. And this might cut more of my time paying that much cash take a 2 hour trip to JFK because of this issue. Im gonna work on trying to get a drivers licence. Also Im getting word that express buses my boost from $5 to $7.50... Not fair.. :x

The problem is that there is no accountability at the MTA and it is mired with corruption. First they blame the need to increase fares on gas. Now that gas is at a 4 year low, they move on to some other excuse. I would love to take a look at their bookkeeping - or lack there of one. One year, there's billions of dollars in surpluses and the MTA is handing out free rides; the next it's in a billion dollar shortfall and says it needs to raise fares.

While I understand the system is ancient and in many ways outdated, and that there is a need for significant upgrades, ridership remains at an all time high, gas is at a low and the economy is in the toilet.

Who are the people who oversee the MTA? Who are the people who oversee those people? It always seems like it's the MTA chairman who comes out making all these statements, with little backing on why a fare increase is so desperately needed...
