I forgot to post here something I read recently. It claims that Floyd Bennett Field has underground tunnels leading to the runways. Has anybody ever heard of these? What would be their purpose? I believe that tours of the tunnels were being given to the public. Incidentally, a volunteer took me up to the old control tower a few months ago and gave me a tour. Unfortunately, the visibility was low that day so I couldn't see much. He said that money has been allotted to restore the old tower to her former glory.

From Forgetten NY (http://www.forgotten-ny.com/YOU%27D%20NEVER%20BELIEVE/floydbennett/floyd.html)

The terminal building was topped by an air traffic control tower and featured modern innovations such as underground tunnels extending from the basement to the ramp area. This allowed passengers to comfortably walk from the terminal to their aircraft in any weather.

The tunnels FBF were filled in years ago. Does anyone remember the blue hangar there? As for the Janet flights, Last time I was in Vegas the pax all left the Janet terminal and boarded the A/C via uncovered airstairs.

I think I read somewhere that they were giving public tours of the tunnels at FBF. I think it was during Open House NY weekend. I never attended because I didn't want to see the Concorde without her radome. I visited Governor's Island instead which for the first time, allowed the public to view the southern portion of the Island before demolition.

Yep, they were giving tours of the tunnels, the hangars and the control tower two Saturdays ago. Unfortunately I didn't read about it until the day after! We definitely have to keep an eye out for it next year. Open House NY takes place over one weekend every year where various interesting places around the city give free tours to the public, generally they require reservations. http://www.ohny.org

I knew about the tunnel tours but couldn't make-it. They were also having a display of old MTA buses that weekend in Brooklyn. If those tunnels were filled-in, how could they give tours?

I went out to Floyd Bennett for OHNY -- got a tour of the tower and the tunnels. They're not filled in, but they're dark, damp, and musty -- apparently they flood every time it rains.

Went out to Hangar B afterwards to see a modern dance performance that was part of the OHNY weekend, where dancers were performing in and around the historic aircraft that HARP is working on restoring.

I have a bunch of Flickr pictures up, and my set for the entire OHNY weekend is here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidiot/sets/72157607740290484/detail/). I have some shots of the tunnels here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidiot/2913823382/in/set-72157607740290484/), here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidiot/2913830296/in/set-72157607740290484/), here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidiot/2912986697/in/set-72157607740290484/), and here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidiot/2912988515/in/set-72157607740290484/), and pretty much the first three pages of that set were taken at Floyd Bennett.
