When Teresa Olaya of Brooklyn died of cancer this past March, her husband Miguel made arrangements to transport the body back to her native Ecuador for burial. Unfortunately, it seems someone at American Airlines shipped it to GUA (Guatemala City) rather than GYE for Guayaquil, Ecuador, and no one could figure it out until four days had past. By then, Mrs. Olaya had decomposed too badly for an open casket funeral. AA even had the cojones to demand $321 to ship the body to the correct place.

American Airline's typo lost wife, body's sent to wrong country (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2008/09/08/2008-09-08_american_airlines_typo_lost_wife_bodys_s-3.html) [Daily News]

I hate IATA codes.
One of these days people are going to learn the value of using 4 letter codes instead of 3 letter codes for airports and 3 letter codes instead of 2 for airlines.
I'll be dead and gone before this will happen sheesh.
SEGY / GYE
MGGT / GUA
