INDIANAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Republic Airways Holdings (NASDAQ: RJET - News), announced today that its Republic Airlines subsidiary has signed an agreement with Midwest Airlines to provide 12, 76–seat Embraer E170 jets operating as Midwest Connect with initial service beginning October 1, 2008.

Quite a shock to see. Rumors were going around they were close to shutting down schedule ops and reducing to charters like sun country.

Hope the deal with Republic works, but sadly this news will resort to more layoffs at YX.

This is a little surprising as rumors where Republic was going to used their unused 170's from the cancelled F9 flying to start flying for Alaska, guess it will be Midwest instead. The 170's should look sweet in YX's scheme.

There appears to be much more to this story. Midwest is going from 25 to only NINE 717's, Pilots are understandbly OUTRAGED as their jobs are being outsourced to Republic.

This just came in speednews daily

REPUBLIC AIRWAYS and TPG CAPITAL agreed to inject $60m into MIDWEST AIRLINES. As part of the deal, Republic will operate 12 E170s as Midwest Connect.

MIDWEST AIRLINES reached agreement with Boeing to return 16 of its 25 717s by end of 2008.

Midwest really should be ashamed of themselves. If they took the AirTran offer they would have saved 100s of jobs that are now going to be lost. Another case of blind upper management running the show.

Early reports indicate LGA-MKE as expected will stay all 717 but LGA-MCI will go from 3 717 (recently reduced from 4) to 1 717 and 2 E-170 but no word yet on when the 1st 170 would start in LGA.

On the bright side, I expect the 170 will look pretty sexy in Midwest colors.
