View Full Version : POST YOUR PHOTOS: Emirates A380 Arrives at JFK

Matt Molnar
2008-08-01, 03:14 PM
The momentous arrival of the first A380 in revenue service to JFK might not be a "hot photo" on any of the big picture sites, but here at NYCA it's going to be hotter than Jessica Alba sunbathing on the space shuttle launch pad. So post your photos HERE.

First one to post a photo of the whale bird on approach to JFK gets the undying admiration of your fellow NYCA'ers along with thousands of rubber necking anetters and jpnetters (who will have to look here since they'll be waiting a week for the pics to show up on their own sites  ) and a note under your username indicating your awesomeness to all.

Please don't post anything else here until some photos are up. Thanks!

We had a huge turnout today, with over 40 people coming. The Mounds were so packed that there were people standing on the soccer field.

It was a great time, and great to meet so many new faces!

We started off tailgating by Firestone, with more cars than I've ever seen in that usually-empty area of the parking lot.

http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/a390group3.jpg

Then we worked our way over to the Mounds when we got some heads-up (thanks, TPA!). We were unfortunately plagued with clouds at game-time, so I backed off and took group photos while it passed, then we did another organized shot.

I saw it fly past as I was meandering through Queens...   How much of that crowd actually fit on the Mound(s)?

I've been given permission to try again on Sunday...

This aircraft is starting to become one of my favorites of the modern aircraft. I didn't like it at all at first but that has changed alot, espescially after seeing it wear Emirates colors.

T-bird76, great shots! In the shot where you can see the gate it dwarfs every aircraft around, even the AI 77W! Also, is A6 only equipped with two jetways or can I only see the top level/first jetway?

There's three jetways there, you can't see the first one.

Great shots, everyone! It was good to see so many people out for the arrival today. Tommy, very nice work, glad you were in town to catch her this time. And thanks for the heads up on the runway use.

A three hour trip back to Pennsylvania, and dial-up access means I won't won't be posting any photos for a day or two.

Great shots everybody and I regret being unable to get the day off from work. But despite work the Beast was visible with the naked eye from our Ramp Tower at LGA, and biniculars gave us a pretty nice view.

The local TV news coverage had some interior shots that where simply amazing, much more plus than Singapore.

Cheers

Surprisingly, one of the local stations out of Wilkes-Barre, PA just showed a clip of the A380 landing at JFK on the local news. Just a short clip showing the touchdown and landing roll, looked like it was shot by one of the NY news helicopters, but still interesting to see it get covered out here in the sticks.

Excellent shots, all!

It was a pleasure meeting some of you folks today. Special thanks to Phil, who in all probability saved the day for me. Had I been flying solo, I'd probably have stayed camped out by 31R and would have missed the arrival.

With the Mounds view, it's tough to get a unique angle but here's my best shot of the day - pity about the clouds, but it could have been worse:

Dropping family off at Terminal 4 at 4:20pm (A HASSLE)

Getting lost on JFK's interior roadway system (A PAIN IN THE @&*)

Making it to the top of the Jetblue parking garage about 3 minutes before touchdown.
Exiting the parking garage and not being charged the fee (Wasn't there long enough)
Making it home in <20 minutes (before the Friday afternoon traffic)
(PRICELESS)

It seems this ship was visible from all parts of the 5 boroughs!! LOL
I'm glad I left work early. Its funny, the 22s come over Hicksville fairly low and as I was walking to my car I heard the dull roar of an approaching arrival but one look up told me that this was NOT your average jet. It had
this look of power and grace as it slowly cruised by. What a beauty.

Very nice pics! I hoped to see the plane flying over my home in cruising altitude (normally most of the EK-flights to JFK take this route), but it used a way 100 km east from here...... :(

Looking at the pictures I remember the first visit of the A380 at DUS/EDDL - the only difference that at DUS probably much more people were waiting (about 100.000)! This pic (not from me) shows a small part of the crowd: Klick (http://www.planepictures.net/netshow.php?id=553890)

PS: Do I understand it right, that the regular service to JFK will start at 01.10.2008?

I don't think this has been mentioned, but I think kudos are due to Jetphotos.net. I uploaded two different shots to Jetphotos.net and Airliners.net shortly after arriving home last night; based on the individual sites' rules I didn't think the A380 NYC visit merited being a "hot" item (despite my own personal views on the matter), and didn't mark the photos as hot on either site. This morning, I had an e-mail from Jetphotos, unfortunately a rejection for "contrast". I was first surprised that the photo was screened as priority even though I hadn't marked it as such, but obviously disappointed in the rejection. I then re-uploaded another image, the same one I submitted to Airliners, feeling sure this time it wouldn't be a hot item since quite a few others had their shots accepted by that time. A few hours later I checked back - and lo and behold, they made another pass through the upload queue and accepted my shot. I am impressed.

I'm normally an Airliners.net kind of guy, but situations like this infuriate me. All of our JFK A380 shots will sit in the A.net queue for the next two weeks while the rest of the world quietly forgets about the event. This costs both us and the site hits, in a big way. Meanwhile, Jetphotos reaps the rewards. I'm thinking more and more my loyalties are misplaced.

Yea thats why I didn't other to add any shots to JP cause I figured they would just reject them for "Invalid Hot". Not to mention the shots frmo the day were just bad because of the clouds.

Mister John J,

You haven't been a member of these boards all that long. Allow me to make you aware of the fact much of everything you've just said is wildly instigative. The manner by which you speak is likely to urge, provoke, and/or incite heated debate amongst the individuals comprising this community. As passionate members of the aviation community as a whole, it's most proper for us all to keep any thoughts of this sort we may have, for whatever reason, to ourselves or on an interpersonal level... not on one which is global. On behalf of the several hundred individuals here, I'd ask that you do the same.

This being said, welcome!

to everyone else...

Glad you all seemed to have such a fantastic time, despite the dodgy weather! I wish I could have been there to join in on the fun. I'm happy to see that many of you (recording breaking crowd! WOW!) were able to enjoy this memorable day in the history of aviation in the U.S. :D

Certainly not the greatest of days to be out shooting such an event, but we were there. Like all the times in the past when the weather wasn't stellar yet we were there to record the event. And such a big turnout too! Nice to see so many interested in the hobby. Here's a couple I took and the group shot Anne took.

I want to thank those of you who posted the awesome shots and I hope everyone had a great time spotting this beauty Friday afternoon. A job well done!

I drove over to the airport last friday afternoon to spot it at the gate. The best I could get was the tail view from 878-Rockaway Blvd west bound. Being that it was parked in the inside gates of T-4, I couldn't get a good shot of it inside of the airport. I am hoping to see it in all its glory coming in on a 31L/R final. (Better yet ... intercepting it on a 22L short final driving westbound on 878...)

They are great photos :)

But no offense to any A380 chasers on here but I won't make a special visit to Heathrow to see a Singapoor A380, as i am a Concorde chaser and will only go to Heathrow to see Concorde G-BOAB.

If an A380 happens to fly by then i'll take a photo or 3.

On Concorde I had to use a ASA/400 film + 80-400 mm zoom + 1/500th sec or more to get her on take off / landing.

What lenses and shutter speeds did you guys use to catch the A380 ?

Is it as slow as 747 or is it a bit faster ?
