NEW WINDSOR – Delta Air Lines has dropped another daily flight out of its schedule from Stewart International Airport, effective in September.

Delta will go to two daily flights to Atlanta, confirmed Susan Elliot, a spokeswoman for Delta, Tuesday.

It’s part of a broad capacity reduction strategy to compensate for rising costs, including “record high fuel prices,” Elliot said.

“We’ve had a reduction in domestic capacity of approximately 13 percent,” she said.

But for Stewart, it’s been almost a 50 percent cut for Delta, going from 27 departures a week in July to 14 in September.

The picture has changed rapidly. On July 2, Elliott confirmed that the four flights were to drop to three. Now it’s two.

The remaining flights out of Stewart are at 6:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.

Delta served Stewart in years past, but left, returning in May of 2007 with the Atlanta runs using 50-seat Canadair Regional Jets.

AirTran Airways earlier also said it’s ending service to Atlanta as well as to Florida cities it has served since early 2007.
