Saturday 6-7 could be an interesting day for fans of Runway 22 departures at LGA. First the Port plans on closing 13-31 from Midnight Friday to 0600 Sunday morning. Secondly with the forecasted SW winds LGA will likely be up and down 22 all day. Allthough clear skies are forecasted for much of the day their will be a lot of haze and your probably saying why stand in the 90 degree plus heat to shoot in the haze ? That brings up thirdly, with the forecasted heat their will be some very heavy, long takeoff roll departures and combine that with runway 22, could make for some very interesting shots, and video if you shoot it.

Enjoy

We have a Saturday only 733 to CLT at 1705, it holds 126, I will be surprised if we can take more than about 110, luckily it's not full.

Good Luck tommorow AA 777 !

Right now it looks like 8 seats are blocked already on the S80 DFW flights tomorrow leaving 132 available, but I wouldnt be really surprised if they left with around 100 people........

Good luck to you too LGA777!!

Today had a few surprises and I am not talking aircraft. Around 1445 they found what might be a buckle in the concrete on 22, caused by the heat, the Port sent out and engioneer to investigate and operations ground to halt, thankfully for only a few minutes. I had 5 Airbusses and an EMB-170 holding and all ready to divert so it got a little dicey up here for a few, luckily they all made it in but around 20-30 minutes later than orginally planned. I guess the Port got a little nervous and re-opened 13-31 shortly there after, the actual construction was on Taxiway Bravo and some of the high speed turn off's so it was not that big a deal as no actual equipment was on the runway. After about an hour of 13 departures we switched again to 31 departures, which even at NINETY SIX degrees, the current temperature my 737-300 to CLT was able to depart 100 pct full.

AA777 this probably helped your day as well and Delta777LR I enjoyed the visit at Planeview today, hope you got some great shots?

Cheers

Yup we had a few planes doing the "spingy thing" in the air when they were inspecting the runway for the buckle. A lot of the planes that came in right after the buckle issue were all asking for status of the runway.

Only one of our flights had an issue with the 22 deperatures. It was way overweight and they ended up loading with people and planned a landing in BNA for some Jet-A juice. After it taxied out they switched to 13 for deperatures so it probably could have taken more gas but it had blocked out already.....

What are the restrictions with rwy 22 departures that are different from other runways...since they all have the same length?

I'm sure Ron or others can confirm, but I suspect it has to do with climb gradient restrictions based on obstacles on departure.

Well I made out to LGA early this morning to catch plenty of take offs from plainview Park, and to Ron, it was a pleasure seeing you out there today and thanks again for the ride to the M60 bus stop..

Ahh, I was wondering what was up...

I know the airlines are having a hard time, but I wasn't expecting to see a Chevy Suburban doing a take off roll. :)

Didn't look like they examined it very closely, they couldn't have been out there more than 2 minutes, didn't even notice anyone get out of their car. All four vehicles pulled onto the north end of the runway around 2:50, then it looked like three of them pulled to the side and the fourth, seen coming at me above, sped down to the south end and off the very last taxiway. A couple minutes later a Midwest 717 departed, and they kept up until about 3:15.

Somehow I managed a few decent shots despite the magnificent heat haze:

Uhh, might be time to stow the reversers and not suck a bunch of dirt into the engines there, captain.

NIce stuff Gothamspotter, I must have just missed you there because I left there around 12:15PM but I did see Ron pop by while I was taking pictures and he gave me a ride to the M60 bus stop around the other side of the GCP.

Yeah, I got there around 2:15 I guess, which is late for ideal light at Planeview, but I experimented a bit and got a few decent liftoff shots. The heat haze didn't help my cause, but I stayed until they started departing 13 around 3:30 I guess.

I figured that, because I also got word that they reopened rwy 13-31 again

Nice shots gentlemen. To answer Phil D's earlier question the reason Runway 22 is so weight restricted is as follows. Runways 4, 13, and 31 all have water at the ends, and a fair amount of room for a very heavy aircraft making a slow climb after a departure using almost the entire runway to get airbourne and climb safetly away from the airport. Runway 22 has at the immediate end of the runway first a service road, then an uphill slope of grass followed by the Grand Central Parkway. Anotherwords if you are ready to become airbourne at the very end of the other 3 runways you "might" make it. The same scenerio on 22 would make what happened to Taca in Hondourous last week look like a walk on the beach by comparision. This is why many of the older more weight restricted prone aircraft like the 733,734,M80,DC9,727 are significantly restricted on 22, especially in 90 plus degree heat and humidity.

Hope this helps ?
