Continental plans to end Daytona service

DAYTONA BEACH -- Come September, Continental Airlines will no longer provide service out of Daytona Beach, the company has announced.

Financial performance and the high cost of fuel "made the losses too great to allow us to maintain the service (after Sept. 2)" were cited as the reasons in a written statement.

But airport officials will try to sway them to stay.

"There is a viable market between here and Newark (N.J.)," said Stephen Cooke, director of business development at Daytona Beach International Airport. "I think we have a very strong case to get them to stay."

The airline is contacting customers currently booked on flights after Sept. 2 and offering to either accommodate them on other flights or issue a refund.

I never thought much of this service. They pulled out of DAB after 9/11 but came back a year later. Unfortunately, Daytona Beach is losing two airlines in three months. AirTran pulls out in June, and Continental in September. All we will be left with is Delta and US Airways.
