Continental and United Said to Be Closer to a Merger

United Airlines and Continental Airlines are getting closer to a merger agreement and would like to wrap up a deal by the end of next week, people with direct knowledge of the discussions said Friday.

The negotiations, which have been under way for months, accelerated after Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines announced a $3 billion deal on April 14 that would create the nation’s biggest air carrier.

The talks between United and Continental are in an advanced stage but are not yet complete, the people who had been briefed on them said. They requested anonymity because the talks were private.

Wait.... Wasn't United supposed to merge with a resurected Skybus??? Or maybe it was Jetblue... No wait, it HAD to be Virgin America! That was it!!!

So it is very clear United is the major player in this merging field.

Either US Airways or Continental, and it is very obvious because American is in talks whoever doesn't merge with whom this will be discussed also.

UA/CO merge, then US and AA have discussions...

If UA/US merges, CO/AA developes an alliance.

Something will involve these four.

Well, UA is kinda screwed now. Tilton has been shopping them for years and CO was the closest he's come to making a deal, and now it's not happening. Perhaps we'll see a bidder emerge for UA once their stock tanks tomorrow morning.

Thank god.

Keep Continental my Continental!

I can't imagine an airline with such great service combing with an airline with such poor service. Although I'm sure Matt Thaler is rolling his eyes right now.
