Japanese man under fire in Philippines for tapping woman's bottom at airport

MANILA -- A 65-year-old Japanese man continues to face criticism in the Philippines after being taken into custody for tapping the bottom of the Cebu governor's daughter at Manila airport.

A female lawmaker in the Philippines describes the actions of the 65-year-old man from Tokyo as disdainful of women in the country. Newspapers in the country have also branded his actions as thoughtless.

However, when questioned by the Mainichi at the detention facility, the man defended his actions, saying, "I was just warning her about her manners."

Local authorities say the man tapped the bottom of the governor's 26-year-old daughter, who happens to be a lawyer, while collecting his luggage that had arrived at Manila airport from Cebu on the morning of April 8.

The lawyer took exception to his behavior, and the man was taken into custody by immigration officials and detained on suspicion of violating immigration laws through "undesirable" behavior.
