A U.S. B-1 bomber caught fire after landing at an air base in Qatar on Friday but the crew escaped without injury, the Air Force said.

Fire erupted as the plane taxied after landing at al Udeid Air Base around 1:10 p.m. EDT after what the Air Force described as "a ground incident." "The crew evacuated the aircraft and is safe. The fire was contained," the Air Force said in a statement. A board of inquiry has been appointed to investigate.

Earlier, a U.S. defence official said the B-1 had crashed and that the cause was unknown. The official was responding to report on Qatar-based Al Jazeera television that said the plane was a B-52.

Very happy to see the crew is safe. This is the same base I slept at last year. I've been there several times and I remember watching B-1s tear ass taking off (an VC-10s, RC-135s too )

The base is still closed , one of our flights had a front row seat for the action as they were on final behind it.. we ended up diverting.

The Deid is like the Air Force's International Airport in the Middle East... We send rotators out there all the time... Glad to hear the crew made it out... Sounds like the a/c caught fire on the ground, not that it "blew up" on final... Media over dramatization as usual....
