F-22 demo! Sweet! I was hoping we'd get that last year, but alas, only as a static display at the McGuire show (which, for anyone who doesn't already know, is the weekend after the Jones Beach show this year). It's one of my favorite shots, but I wanna see it flying!

From their website http://www.cafb29b24.org/index.html

Great News!
For Immediate Release

The Cavanaugh Flight Museum (“CFM”) and the Commemorative Air Force (“CAF”) announced today a Cooperative Agreement that will put the world’s only airworthy B-29 back in the air. Jim Cavanaugh has pledged $1.2 million sponsorship for the re-engine project of FIFI, the CAF’s world famous B-29. “This sponsorship, together with additional donations from CAF members, should go a long way towards completing the project of putting FIFI back in the air again,” said Stephan Brown, President / CEO of the CAF. “Fundraising for FIFI by the CAF will continue, as we still have other restoration maintenance to perform, but Jim Cavanaugh’s generosity will get us a long way down that track,” Brown continued. Cavanaugh is the main financial support for the CFM and has been a long time benefactor of warbird projects and the CAF. “The B-29 played such a significant role in history that it is important that this airplane be preserved. Because of my close relationship with the CAF, I felt the need to get FIFI flying again,” said Cavanaugh.

It doesn't say specifically when she will be back in the air, but it definitely looks like it will happen. Will it be in time for the air show? For some reason, I feel like it won't be, so I should probably change that until I get confirmation.

Awesome. In years past, has this even been good for photos, lighting-wise?

Awesome. In years past, has this even been good for photos, lighting-wise?

At the beach is kinda meh, in my opinion. You can end up with a lot of haze, and since you're mostly facing south, the planes are basically backlit all day (definitely head-on and to one side, varying with the sun). Not to say that you can't get some good shots, but it's better to go to the beach to watch the show than to photograph it.

IMO, Republic Airport (FRG) is the place to be. All day people are parked along the fences and you can get some really nice light with close access. You don't really get the routines, but the T-birds did a little show at the airport last year and I think the Blue Angels did something similar the year before. The downside is that you don't necessarily get everything, as the bigger stuff doesn't base at FRG; last year the B-1 only did the beach, and I think the F-15 demo was out of Southampton (at least two years ago). Fat Albert does FRG though.

I'd love it if the F-22 stayed over at FRG!

Edited to add:

Here are my photos from last year to compare:
* Sat, May 26, at Jones Beach (http://photos.pgengler.net/gallery/2007-05-26)
* Sun, May 27, at Republic (http://photos.pgengler.net/gallery/2007-05-27)

Au contraire, a pair of B-1's did a couple of low fly-by's at FRG the day before the first show, and my camera was at Nikon for a cleaning  . If the F-22's stayed at FRG, well...you know, I'd be moist. lol

The light sucks....its that simple. The light is a$$ on in the morning and then nose on in the afternoon. Plus the crowds blow to...if you want to see the best part of the show go to the practice session on Thursday and Friday. The beach is empty and the practice session is generally longer then what you see on the weekend. I think hanging out on New Highway at FRG is far more enjoyable then the show itself. Bring a cooler a chair and a ladder and your all set. However for pictures if they don't go off early enough its backlit city but again IMO its more enjoyable then going to the beach. I enjoy the Labor Day weekend show better at FRG. This past Labor Day Moose and I sat in the parking lot at Airport Plaza and got some fantastic evening shots of the warbirds going in and out, plus some biz traffic, light was spot on to.

The Thunderbirds did Jones Beach last year; it seems like the T-birds (no, not you, the demo team!) and the Angels alternate the Jones Beach show. The Thunderbirds are doing McGuire and Atlantic City this year, if you want to travel a bit to see them.

The Bone was cool, if for no other reason than how loud it was. There was a Harrier demo at the Atlantic City show last year which was excellent; something like that'd be nice at Jones Beach. I don't know that an E-3 would be a particularly popular thing; it's just not as exciting as fighters and all that. Jones Beach missed out on the stealth planes last year; McGuire had an F-117 and ACY had a B-2.

I would love a low dirty flyby or three by an E3. That would make me happy. The last time I saw a 707 frame was almost a year ago in SRQ when I was at the airport while a pair of 135's took tuns seeing who could bounce it harder on runway 14.

NO PETS. Of course, this excludes animals that aid the handicapped. Unless that animal happens to be a ferret, and if you are using a ferret to lead you around everywhere, you will probably have trouble getting to the show in the first place.

No you REALLY have to go to the beach to enjoy the show. The great thing about 2 days is you do one at the beach and one at FRG. And the crowd isnt so bad if you stay to the east or west of the Jones Beach Tower. More room and less congested. There I will pull up my chair and chill out. Usually have my ipod set up for
some good rockin tunes but listened at a level where they dont drown out the sounds of the engines. In fact you guys should check out "If I Could Fly" by Joe Satriani from the "Is There Love In Space" CD. A few other great airshow Satch tunes are "Surfing With the Alien" and "Speed of Light".
Back in 2005 I was finishing up two months of disability due to surgery and didnt even realize they did "practice" shows. But hearing some chatter on my scanner I drove down to Jones Beach and was pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately I havent been able to do it again. The one other time I was off that Friday rain cancelled the
practice show.

Spent the day at FRG & the beach. Horrible conditions this morning, and with the rain and winds, they fooled us - we were expecting the Blues to arrive on Rwy 14, instead they came in the opposite direction. Between the showers we did manage to get some shooting in. Here are some from FRG.

I absolutely LOVED the weather at FRG today...the sporadic rain showers provided for some crazy lighting, and great cloud backdrops. Compared to last year, I am so much happier with the way my pictures have been coming out. I think I'm starting to learn a thing or two about this photography thing.

Is any day going to be necessarily better than the other? I know the weather will be great for both, but I was just wondering if any of the two days had any advantages like less traffic or people.

Also, I'm wondering if my 70-200mm will be sufficient enough for beach shots. I do have that 1.6x magnification from the camera, though.

I don't think there will be much (if any) difference in the show, and I don't think the traffic or crowds will be much different. I've gone on Sunday the past two years, and both days the year before. It's going to be crowded...

Stupid question, I know, but will all seven Blues be on the ramp for Saturday night?

Thanks! If you mean for Night Under the Stars, no the Blues will not be there. They are parked across the field at the main terminal ramp. Unfortunately, we will not have access to that area for our shoot.

nice shot. Was that at about....840 AM on Thursday AM? I was heading into the gym, sitting on Wellwood ave at the light when she thundered upward!

I too am considering heading out on Sunday, if only to give the baby a taste of the Blues.

If I were to leave the house to be there at noon and book outta there as soon as they are done, are the odds that I'll be stuck in traffic? If so I'll pass this year...again.

And plan it in 2 years so that I am off on Friday :)

So, the day before the show my dad decides to exchange the L lens with Canoga Camera in California because of a speck of dust in one of the inner lens that he claims he found. It won't be back for a couple weeks at least.

Shots with that EF-S 18-55mm? Personally, I think not.

The only way to get the planes bigger than mere specks in a photo would be to convince him to buy that Fujifilm S700 that he's been leaning towards for a while. It's not an SLR, but it's better than the 350D with a 55mm lens.

Right?

Oh, and great shots by the way.

Did the F-22 do multiple passes or just a flyover?

Which runway did the Blue Angels use for takeoff and landing?

Thanks

Thanks! The F-22 came up initial in formation with the P-51 (Heritage Flight formation) They did a mid-field break, the P-51 came in to land and the F-22 followed him in for a low approach then headed back to ISP. The Blues used Rwy 32 for departure/arrival both times (they ran down to Annapolis in the morning for the USNA graduation ceremony.)

Forget it. I hit traffic on the Wantagh at 10:30 and wound up watching the Warbirds from my car. And unless you are sitting in your car as soon as
the Angels finish you are going to hit traffic. I was in Lot 3 and had no problem leaving but l waited about 45 minutes after the Angels finished. Sunday
should be worse with even better weather and bigger crowds. With gas prices so high a lot of people stayed home this holiday weekend and the air show
is a good choice for a family outing close-by.

Got home a short time ago from the beach. Many photos to process...not as many as Fred  Will post some later tonight. Second year in a row I didn't have any delays getting in or out.

I've seen all the performers before except the Raptor, and really only went to the beach to see it fly. I was dumbfounded watching it. I don't know what it is, but is clearly isn't an airplane...airplanes don't do what the Raptor did. It was like a religious experience watching that bird fly!

> Second year in a row I didn't have any delays getting in or out.<

My oldest son and his girlfriend left at 11 and got there just in time to see the Angels. In fact they just parked on the side of the road at that point. I was listening to the radio broadcast and they announced if you arent close dont bother. This was around 11:45.

>I've seen all the performers before except the Raptor, and really only went to the beach to see it fly. I was dumbfounded watching it. I don't know what it is, but is clearly isn't an airplane...airplanes don't what the Raptor did. It was like a religious experience watching that bird fly<

LOL I know what you mean. Today I did FRG and was by the Atlantic parking lot on 109 as Raptor 1 did two flybys!! Whoa!! The way it turns on the DIME is truly amazing!!
And when Angel 9, the C-130, returned it came tearing in and as it turned for Runway 14 I swear the wings were pointed straight down.
When it came back I thought it was going to do a high pass then all of a sudden he drops his nose and comes straight down. Nice!!
The Angels did one low flyby with smoke along 32 then did a hard right break to line-up for 32.
It was truly a fun weekend with the beach yesterday and FRG today.

That is a 1963 Sikorsky UH-34D that a group of dedicated volunteers worked on for 5 and a Half years out in Cutchogue (Long Island) to get it airborne. Just a great
story and it was very cool finally seeing it fly on Sunday. For me that was the first time.

Great shots (as usual). Love the shot shot of the Angel C-130 making the turn to come in for the Fly-by. When I was at
FRG by the movie theaters on Sunday that SOB (LOL) came tearing across Farmingdale/Bethpage low level then made a
turn just like the one in the picture with the wings pointed straight down for the R14 fly-by!! Just amazing flying of that big aircraft!!

Gerard, I saw that too, I was on Pinelawn heading home, that wicked 60 degree bank to port just off the ground. NICE!
