WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon is planning to shoot down a broken spy satellite expected to hit the Earth in early March, The Associated Press has learned.

U.S. officials said Thursday that the option preferred by the Bush administration will be to fire a missile from a U.S. Navy cruiser, and shoot down the satellite before it enters Earth's atmosphere.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the options will not be publicly discussed until a later Pentagon briefing. Read more... (http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/us/AP-DeadSatellite.html?_r=2&hp&oref=slogin&oref=slogin)

some of us just don't have the time to sit on the internet and phone all day. between two jobs, two houses and going to school my time to myself is severly limited. i'm sorry i wasn't able to read it and posed the question, but reading is hard to do when you're sitting on JFK's GAT ramp waiting to go home.

Basically there aren't even explosives on the missile, just a sort of kamikaze kill vehicle that smashes into the target as hard as it can.

Several successful anti-ballistic mile tests have been conducted from the cruisers, most frequently from the USS Shiloh, but no test has the urgency or high profile as the impending satellite shoot-down. The SM-3, when fired vertically, can target a satellite as high as 310 miles. After the third stage of the rocket is spent, the kill vehicle finds the target with forward-looking infrared sensors and steers itself into the satellite. “What we’re talking about is a minor modification in software, from the Aegis system and the missile itself,” Cartwright said.

this was done in a tom clancy book; Red Storm Rising. basically an F-15 took off from langley with a certain missle under it's wing and drop tanks under all it's other hardpoints. it climbed almost vertically until it was able to fire the missle, with the missle doing the rest of the work while the F-15 dead sticked it back to langley. of course, mr clancy could go on for days on such a scenario. definately made for very good reading.

now, if anyone is into military literature and wants to read about a US vs Russia war then read the book. i highly recommend it!
