Qantas, the Australian flag carrier, yesterday became the first airline to announce it was seeking damages from Boeing, the US aircraft maker, for late delivery of the 787 Dreamliner.

Boeing was forced to confirm on Wednesday that it was facing more embarrassing delays in the first deliveries of its 787, its latest range of long range, 250-300 seat jets, the group's biggest investment in commercial aircraft for more than a -decade.

Geoff Dixon, Qantas chief executive said: "We will be discussing the issue of liquidated damages with Boeing in the coming weeks."
