Some of you not-so-youngsters may remember on Christmas Eve hearing about NORAD tracking Santa as he made his rounds. The funny thing is it began by accident - in 1955, a Sears store in Colorado ran an ad, with a phone number which children could use to call Santa. Unfortunately, they ran an incorrect number - the number published was for the duty officer of CONAD (Continental Air Defense Command, the predecessor of NORAD), who began getting calls on Christmas Eve. The quick thinking colonel on duty began giving updates on Santa's location to the kids who called. This became an annual tradition.

This tradition continues today, more than 50 years later, although the technology has changed with the times. They now have a web site (available in 6 languages) http://www.noradsanta.org and you can even use Google Earth to track Santa on your own computer, or call NORAD directly via a toll-free number. Most of the costs of this operation are now covered by sponsors.
