Updates were made to the JFK Spotting Map page, adding public transportation directions to the locations of "Point B - The Mounds" and "Point C – Costco/Boston Market/Burger King".

http://nycaviation.com/jfkspotting

There are similar directions for others spots, but they require long walks, sometimes through unsafe neighborhoods, and it was decided to leave them off of the site for the protection of members.

As always, please let us know if we can further updates or corrections to these pages with other information.

Should Firestone be added to the the Costco/Boston Market/Burger King section?

Yes, I'm planning to do that.

I'm glad to see that public transportation for JFK is being acknowledged!

A few comments:
-Not all Q111 buses go the Mounds. Some terminate on Farmers Blvd. I have absolutely no idea what determines which Q111 bus goes where. My only consistent luck has been to ask the bus driver. Perhaps a note should be added saying that if taking the Q111, ask the bus driver if the route goes down 147th Avenue.

-There is the Q113 and the Q113 Limited. The Q113 Limited is usually faster, but does not stop directly near the Mounds. The closest Q113 Limited stop near the Mounds is right after the bus turns from 147th Avenue to Brookville Blvd., requiring a 5 minute walk back to the Mounds.

-Howard Beach can easily be accessed via public transportation. Take the A to Rockaway Blvd. and then transfer to the Q21. The bus stops right in front of the parking lot. I would consider this safe.

You added the mounds bus additions to Costco/Firestone.

Wouldn't it apply to them, too, if the bus does not always go past Farmers?

I discovered last Sunday a (debatably) better way to get to Firestone. It involves a moderate walk through a very nice neighborhood, so it doesn't quite fit in the category of the Bayswater directions that were rightly not included :)

Take the Long Island Railroad to Cedarhurst.
Walk northwest on Cedarhurst Ave (past the park, away from the restaurants) to W. Broadway
Turn left on W. Broadway. Walk to Rockaway Turnpike.
Turn right on Rockaway Turnpike. Walk until you see the shopping center/spotting location of your choice.

It was about a 20 minute walk for me, but that includes several stops to see what plane was landing. :) It's about 3/4 of a mile.

Sorry to be a pain.
But where is Firestone?
I went out to costco/BK a couple weeks ago and me and my friend couldn't find it.
Should I have kept walking south towards Boston Market?

I am not sure there are any signs on the building anymore. Since that Firestone closed quite awhile ago. If you are spotting at the Boston Market location look directly to the east and you will see Burlington Coat factory and Staples and Best Buy. That's it. The reason the location was referred to as Firestone is because Firestone (Which was located at the south part of the parking lot) was open at the time and that is kind of where you parked to shoot.

Thanks! I try to head out there the next time I'm at JFK.

Firestone is in the Bay Harbour Shopping center, its right behind Costco. The Firestone building is vacant and you can park along the fence line and generally will be left alone. You might get a passer by that will heckle you (in fun) but otherwise no worries.
