On Saturday, September 29th, 2007, La Guardia Airport will host their annual Kids' Day event for Kiwanis Club.

Going from 12pm-4pm, it is open to the public and is FREE. The public can enter near the Marine Air Terminal (it will be obvious where to go once you get there). Do not be shy to come, as it is not only for children, but also the general public. Refreshments are served (for free), photography is very much allowed, and there are many things to see.

Airlines will bring out some planes for boarding and seeing, and there are usually displays from the NYC Department of Corrections, helicopters from various local agencies and sometimes even some fighter jets. The New York Skytypers are regular visitors and usually do a flyby at the end of the show as well.

Last year there were about 30 NYCAers at the event. I hope as many of you come along this year as well. Bring your families and friends if you'd like.

If anyone has more information, questions, or want to share their experiences from previous years, please post them!

Everyone wearing NYCaviation shirts:?:
I haven't met most of you, but from last year's group picture some of you wore nycaviation shirts.
Also I saw in another post that we should get there around like 9 or 10, are the lines that bad?

No offense to all of you mets fans, but I don't like baseball much. I am angry at my school, this is the letter that I wrote to my parents.

Ya wanna hear the buzzkill of the year? I quite angry right now. On the 29th, LGA kids day, there is an all boarder(required) trip to the mets game. Who wants to go to a baseball game and watch a team that you don't like, nor do you care for. And, you know that your aviation buddies are a football field away having a great time with the big shiny metal planes. I really hate being a boarder.

While I'm not a huge fan of that little league team in Queens, personally I'd much rather go to a pro baseball game, especially if it was free, than to go look at some planes and all... Granted, everyone likes different things, so that's just me; but a day at a baseball game isn't too shabby...

Isn't there a way to get out of the game if you really wanted to?

Since I enjoyed it so much last year, I plan on attending again this year. I'll probably be flying OMA-ATL-LGA Sat morning, arriving around noon and then leaving the following morning. Hopefully flights don't fill up and I can make it! Lookin forward to seein everyone!

Anyword yet on what planes will be there? I'm assuming AA and DAL will have an MD but any word on US? Be nice to see PSA sitting there. I hope 4 is in use in the morning, I haven't spotted 4 in ages. WX is looking better then perfect to, High: 74 °F RealFeelŪ: 75 °F
Sunny and pleasant!

When I went a couple of years ago runway 4 was inuse because of sometype of construction.
I can't quite remember but....
Once you are there where all the kids day stuff is: how is spotting the other stuff landing etc?
Too far?

Anyword yet on what planes will be there? I'm assuming AA and DAL will have an MD but any word on US? Be nice to see PSA sitting there.

AA will have an MD80 as long as nothing goes out of service that day. I believe there two spares now so it should be fine. Delta will have an 80 as well and I'm guessing that US will have a 319 in regular new colors. There was a lot of confusion about who the Star Alliance was when it was there last year. LGA777 can confirm I'm sure.

There will also be a C130 (As I understand with the Ski Skids), E2C-Hawkeye and probably 2 F-18's. There were some others that were being worked on, but there wasnt enough time for the Military to get all the necessary paperwork done - Regardless the C130 and the Hawkeye will be really cool.

Finally, there will be a 182 again (like last year) and, as far as I understand, the SkyTypers will indeed be there. I don't think the P-51's will be there this year, but Im not 100% sure on that....

We won't see the P-51 and P-40 from Warbirds over Long Island that normally attend shows in the area - they will be at The Gathering of Mustangs & Legends in Columbus, OH this weekend. Close to 100 Mustangs, plus other warbirds, are expected to be in attendance.

I plan to visit LGA on Sat. for my first time. I have several questions. What time does the event open to the public? When does it close? Are people ever turned-away because they arrived too late? I might not get there until noon. Is that too late? Are there long lines to get in or do guests just walk in? I understand that cameras are permitted. I imagine that there are long lines to enter various aircraft so you can't linger. I am excited and the weather seems to be cooperating. I plan to wear my Pan Am blue tee (if it still fits). See you there. Can I bring in a bottle of water or are bottles prohibited? Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks.

I believe the door opens at 12 pm. So if you arrive at noon, it's perfect timing. You can park at the Marine Air Terminal parking lot for free. There is a security check and you have to open your bags. They then bus you to the separate ramp area reserved for this event. There will be helicopters and WWII planes along with a few passenger jets from the various airlines (DL, US, AA). The line for getting onto the planes will be fairly long. But the planes usually are the regular MD-80/737/A319/A320. So I found it less interesting than getting so close to the take offs and landings. Most members of this forum will forego the visit to the planes and shoot the traffic instead. You will easily find this group of people, depending on the runway use.

Speedbird1
2007-09-27, 10:08 AM
Thanks for the info. LGA has been using the 22 arrival path all week with 13 for departures, but the wind on Sat. is supposed to change to the north so they might be using the Visual Expr 31 Approach and Rwy 4 for departure. Would that be good ?

Matt Molnar
2007-09-27, 10:32 AM
The ramp area is adjacent to runway 4/22 so that would be good for watching takeoffs but we wouldn't see any arrivals. Barring some weird scenario where they were using only 13/31 for arrivals AND departures you definitely have a good view of the action from the event.

The Port is going to close Rwy 4-22 from 0001 on Sat 9-29 till 1200 on Sunday 9-30 for multiple construction projects and based on forecasted winds plan on up and down Rwy 31.

And to answer AA777's earlier question the US Star Alliance A-319 was 3 years ago, we had new colors A-319's the last two years. And there will be a US A-319 on hand this year as well.

I will making a brief appearance early in the event and look forward to seeing everyone !

Cheers

Late Friday Night Pre Kids Day update.

Based on forecasted winds and with the 4-22 closeure should be up and down 31 all day. Event will be at same location as last two years (Echo Parking) so for photographers not as close to the action as 22 last year but some nice dept shots are very do-able from that location, many aircraft make a right turn to heading three-four-zero just abeam our location.

A Few of the Military birds might or might not make it but the star of the show I feel, the C-130 Hercules will be their for sure. I understand this is a search and rescue aircraft that includes ski's and JATO assist for departure, maybe they will demonstrate when they leave ?

While US will have a normall 319 on display I did make some phone calls and got our newest Special Scheme 319, N717UW Carolina Panthers swithched to the Shuttle for 3 LGA Visits. Arriving LGA @ 0909, 1304, and 1707 the latter should have nice light on 31, and departures at 1000, 1400, and 1800, the middle one should be very shootable from our location, hopefully this will not change, if it does not my gift to you with one other very small possible one TBA tommorow.

I hope everyone has a great time tommorow and hope to see many of you at Kids Day !

Cheers

To get there via public transportation, you can take various buses, all reachable by the subway:

--you can catch the M60 bus at various points along its length: it starts at 106th & B'way and then goes up to 125th and across the Triborough Bridge to LGA. It stops at several subway stops: the 110th St stop on the 1 train, the 125th St stop on the A/B/C/D, the 125th St stop on the 2/3, the Harlem-125th St stop on the Metro-North, the 125th St stop on the 4/5/6, and the Astoria Blvd stop on the N/W. The M60 goes right by Planeview Park, then hits all the terminals, saving the Marine Air Terminal for last.

--you can also take the E/F/G/R/V/7 trains to the 74th Ave/Jackson Heights stop, then take the Q47 to the Marine Air Terminal (or the Q33, but it doesn't go to the MAT; you'll have to go to one of the other terminals, then change to the free shuttle bus.)

Sorry no pics to add but lots of great ones from you folks so far, looking fwd to more. I ended up arriving much later than planned around 1400, but as always I had a great time. This was actually around my 7th or 8th Kids Day, when we started US brought a Shuttle 727 followed by a few years of the 734, and this was our 4th year displaying the A-319. It was great seeing lots of old friends and fellow photoags, and meeting Vidiot, Winglets 747, and G-BOAD.

Starting on Thursday my very cool boss Lou and I started discussing requests from the Port Authority about bringing over one of "those cool Special Scheme planes we see all the time" so after some reconsidertion Lou and I started sending e-mails and making phone calls. The end result was N744P and literally 30 mins after we got approval for the aircraft swap mid-day Friday her APU died in BOS and that really complicated things. But thanks to some great folks in our MTC department and the ramp they agreed to "go the extra mile" as bringing over an aircraft without an APU caused both groups extra work and effort, Thanks Everybody. And BTW late Friday night after tearing down and evaluating the APU the proper parts where ordered. she was closed back up, then after Kids Day with the new parts in LGA the APU repairs where complete and she had a full day of Shuttle flying Sunday with a fully functioning APU. I kept 744's appearance quiet hoping she would not get swapped out at the last minute, and also thought it would be a nice surprise ! And in case your curious plan B would have been N749US.

Something very cool a lot of you may have missed was the departure of the Sky-Topper Texans. I had just exited the back of the C-130 when two took off from 31 in close formation and banked left and passed directly over our location low and loud. About 45 seconds later the other two repeated the cool flyover. About 5 mins later all 4 in tight formation flew down closed Runway 4 at about 50 feet altitude with a little smoke show. Very, Very Cool.

Thanks for reading and already looking forward to next year.

Cheers

It sounds like it was a great time...I think next year, I'll have to bring the family up for this event. My son will love it - well...so will I... he'll
love the cockpit access as well - much like a very generous CO Express captain gave us on our return from Amarillo recently:

It was a great event. I brought a former pupil who is fatherless and had never been inside a plane before. He was awestruck. I never knew such an event existed especially since 9-11. I pictured it as being mobbed with long lines to board aircraft; I was wrong. I understand that it is organized and paid for by the LGA Kiwanis Club. This is a generous thing to do. Although JFK doesn't have a Kiwanis, I'm surprised that they don't sponsor similar events.

It was great to see and talk with the NYCA who members came out.
It was great to talk with Ron Peel, who told the story of the Piedmont, and what he does at US airway. Thanks Ron!
