Memory card confiscated ?

I was at Ikea last week taking pictures of my car (I just washed it) when a security car pulled up next to me. He said to put the camera away or there was a possibility that a cop could come & confiscate the memory card. I'm curious if that ever happened to anyone here ? I never heard of that happening.

BTW, I had to go to Ikea to look for something so I really wasn't there to take pictures of the 4R arrivals. That's the truth.

If a police officer tries to take your memory card, don't let him. If he does take it, that is illegal seizure of property and he can be in big trouble.

They can detain you, but to get the card they need a court order. They can also not tell you to delete pictures

Yes, I have heard of this happening in that general area - from independant sources - at least one of which I would consider fairly reliable.

None of those folks post here however, and I didn't see this happen myself.

The authorities that are alleged to have done this were not the local police, - as difficult as they can be at times.

The greater EWR area is a sort of daily All Star Game of Law Enforcement Agencies. Probably a good thing all things being equal, but not helpful for spotting.

I had this happen to me at JFK a few years back. The PAPD told me to delete the pictures of the concorde I took or he would confiscate the card.

Back then I was not to smart and deleted the pics, Now I would only say one thing...."BADGE NUMBER A$$HOLE!"

At SWF it is pretty ill-advised to take shots of the military traffic through a gate but otherwise if you are taking pictures of normal traffic and not near a security gate they are fine.

At JFK I have also been threatened to have both my camera and memory card confiscated by some security guard who had no idea what he was talking about he. He phoned the NYPD and they just said go shoot somewhere else. Yesterday when I was stopped by the cops at JFK they asked to see my shots on my card because my dad kept talking about the Southern Air. They were quiet impressed haha!

Fred you always make me laugh! Though this approach is not recommended I would say stand up for your rights in this situation.

It took me a bit when I first started to learn what my rigths are, and now I will exercise them when questioned. Although latley, I've not had any problems, as when you're kind and courteous with the police, it rarely escalates to that.

I do not show disrespect unless things go terribly wrong, If a badge is
saying that you have to give up the card...HE IS TRAINED AND KNOWS
HE IS BREAKING THE LAW. He should be arrested and not you being
threatened for something that is legal.

Asking for digital film is the same as ripping film out of the camera...they
are just too dumb to know how to open the cf card slot.

It would be wise to get a badge number and speak if they ask you for the
card. That is the real fight WORTH fighting for as is does not have
anything to do with taking pictures or aviaiton. It has to do with the rights
you have as a citizen. If they want the digital film, they MUST detain you
and get a court order for the film. They still can not delete the images
with a court order, only confiscate. A trial must determine if the photos
are illegal in the eyes of the law. Checks and balances is what our
country is founded on and photography falls under freedom of speach.

On the other hand, if it is a rental cop, he just is clueless to actual law to
begin with. They are almost all clueless when it comes to civil liberty.

I will tell them to call a cop or piss off (IF I AM ON PUBLIC PROPERTY)

They do not have the right to remove my rights as a citizen.

Also remember that if a police officer asks to see the pictures that you've taken, he's asking consent to search your property, and you have every right to say no.

rental cops, The real Police is not dumb......well, so far with me that is.

From the recient posts I am sure it sounds like I do not like the police.
This is not true at all. I do not like Police officers who make up their own
laws. I love the ones that ask what I am doing and look, REALLY LOOK.
There are a few that I wave down and chit chat with. Police are like any
other group, for the most part they are good, some are great and
awesome.....then there are the a$$h0les. They are in every group. The
difference is that these A'ss have a badge, nightstick and gun.

It seems that there is not stop bickering on my part about the Police, It
really is not like that.....but you really only hear about the problems...
Not the cops where their eyes light up and they do not want to go back to
work but just hang and chit chat about planes.

It is nice talking big on a forum, when when it comes down to it, I am allot
more scared then them in EVERY confritaion. I stand up when they make
up laws. If I am asked politely to leave, I do not care where I am, I
LEAVE....I WAS ASKED NICELY! If they go off the mouth with crap, I will
call them on the carpet, THAT SUCKS AND I NEVER LIKE IT.

I keep my head and handle every situation differently, just like all
should. I always show an entuseastic attitude, that's my nature.
