So I want honest opinions backed up by facts. Which one is the best camera?

I'll even add a poll which will run 20 days.

Please no banter between Canon & Nikon users. Honest opinions please.

Thanks

I'd go with the XT or even look at the XTi for the few extra bucks; the dust system is worth it. The D40 as far as features and quality go is well below the XT from Canon. Canon's service is far better then Nikons to, I’ve heard horror stories from Nikon owners when it comes to service. I sent in my 400mm to Canon last year and it was back in my hand 7 days later working perfectly, I was shocked at the turn around.

I also like the Canon lineup of glass, the EF system is world class and the choices are great.

I think Canon is more reliable

Canon is more reliable, they have better lenses, ranging from cheap to expensive, and the overall camera is just a better camera.

I would deffinatly look at the XTi though, great camera, 2 more MP, and dust reduction which works AWESOME for me!

So I go to B&H today with a little more money than I thought I would have. I was able to pick up a Nikon D80 with a 18-135 lens and two 2 gig cards for $1179.

I really liked the Canon but since I was able to afford the D80 and my brother who is incharge of the FDNY Photo Unit and has his own stock of Nikon products the choice was the D80. Nothing like borrowing lenses for free :P

Thank you to everyone for their input.

I picked up an XTi with a 28-105 lens and a 2 gig card for around $950.
