Berlin - An Israeli plane with 170 people on board made an emergency landing in Berlin after smoke spread through the aircraft, an airport spokeswoman said Wednesday. The plane touched down at Schoenefeld airport on the outskirts of the capital at 10:40 pm (2040 GMT) on Tuesday evening. The 162 passengers, six crew and security personnel left the plane via the emergency exits.

The only casualty was a woman who injured her arm sliding down an emergency chute. She was taken to hospital for treatment.

The El Al aircraft was on its way from Tel Aviv to the German capital when the pilot alerted the airport after noticing smoke in the cockpit and cabin area.

Technicians were conducting investigations into the cause of incident, but ruled out sabotage, said airport spokeswoman Rosemarie Meichsner.
