Hey Guys:

I noticed this picture on a-net http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1202564/L/ and I noticed that it looks rather rusty or - dirty. My question is does this effect any performance of the wing and flaps, and does it look more like rust or dirt.

No, what are you seeing is a mixture of greese or hydraluc fluid that may have somehow ended up on top of the wing, that mixed with dust as well whick can be aquired in flight. It is certainly not rust though and it certainly does not have a tangible effect on the performance of the airplane.

I would have to say thats just grease and dirt. It would have to be pretty old and ill-kept to be covered in rust like that. Performance would not be extremely affected though.

yea rust is iron oxide which means it creates on iron exposed to oxygen, that would not be rust cause airliner wings are made of steel etc.
