All the heavy departures were on 22R and all landings 22L, 31L departures were occasional when I was there. With my binoculars, i saw some European departures( Aer Lingus A330, Delta 767-300ER, Finnair MD-11, Gemini Cargo MD-11) with some domestic departures then a few far landings on 22L ( Lufthansa A340-600, Kuwait airways 777, Fed-Ex MD-11)

today we had some great weather.
while we were driving i called LGA ATIS and found out about 4 landings! i first stopped at LGA and took some photos there, but the planes were really back-lit (the sun had a heading of apx 06). here are some from LGA

Then i wanted to catch some 31 landings at JFK. While i was driving i saw a Air China on final. we drove into the first available spot, which was Costco. There i meet Will (winglets747). latter we moved to Firestone.
here are shots form JFK (not in arrival order, but random)

It was good to see so many people out today, I guess the almost perfect weather had everyone itching to go shooting. Started out at Howard Beach with Tommy & Josh May for some departure shots:

Anyone notice something interesting about this A320? Yes I know its jetBlue's 100th A320 but take a look and tell me its not a touch odd.

That's exactly what I was thinking, its rather rare indeed...

Almost all of the shades are down while landing?

Possibly a prisoner transport flight. They use JBU once in a while.

Thats interesting Senga. I was wondering why all the shades would be down but one. I know ppl do shut the shades but I found it odd that so many were closed especially on landing.

Would prisoner flights not land at LGA being closer to Rikers? Or is there a fed facility or something closer to JFK?

WOw, I never knew that.

So then that would be a super-duper-uber-ultra rare photo of ConAir operated by Jetblue.

There are federal lockups in Brooklyn and lower Manhattan where JFK would be closer. Rikers is used only for city prisoners.

It looks like that photo was taken late in the day, and the sun is at Tommy's back which means it would be shining right in those passengers eyes. Isn't it a pretty good likelihood they just closed their shades to block the glare?

MarkLawrence
2007-04-22, 01:21 PM
Ahhhh...ok...thanks Matt - not being from the area - you know - all we see is Rikers on TV

I think that the sun was bright so they closed the shades. i dont think they would transport prisoners on a commercial flight because its too risky and how would they chain the feet cuffs to the floor?

PhilDernerJr
2007-04-22, 04:43 PM
I think it was jsut because the sun was low and probably in everyone's faces. I doubt it was little more than that.

The discovery channel has had the show "ConAir" on a few times and it says that they cannot chain them to the seats because its a safety risk. They have the hand and leg cuffs but they are not chained to the seats. They do in fact charter commercial aircraft as well. There was a Pan Am 727 a couple of months ago that came in to EWR doing one of these flights using the callsign Justice like the rest of them. Was met by prison vans and lots of police.

AirtrafficController

I assure you that the guards had thier fingers on the trigger because the only thing between a safe flight and a take over is the seat belt.
