I called ATIS a little while ago and heard that JFK is using 4R for arrivals and 31L for departures. I've never heard this config. before. Does it happen often or is it quiet rare?

JFK is using RY 4R for arrivals, RY 4L and RY 31L from KK for departures. RY 31L from KK is 10700 feet.

The morning of tbe A-380 VIP flight around NYC when some of us where freezing our butts off at Bayswater that was the configuration. Land 4R, depart 4L and 31L with departure runway depending on departure destination direction.

it's a common misconception that when JFK is departing 31L they have to land 31R. not so... they FAA decides on what runways they want to use for whatever reasons. if they can land on two runways they can get airplanes in quicker and reduce airborne holds and arrival delays. usually, departin on two runways is harder to pull off.
