Getting warmed up for the A-380, I did a little spotting this morning. I was also joined by a local writer, who will be doing a piece on JFK spotting with the A-380's arrival for New Yorker magazine. If anyone is approached by this guy, please cooperate - he's a good guy!

Started out at Firestone around 9:30. Between the early hour, and Daylight Saving Time, the light wasn't great, really needed to wait a few hours for the sun to come around, but here are a couple.

Started out the day right, with a Varig Log DC-10

Took a quick run to Howard Beach for a few departure shots:

Ran into John Toomey at HoBe, but before we got too many departures (and no heavies :( ) they switched to Rwy 22L/R. That meant a quick run to North Woodmere Park.

Saw a big, dark thing on approach, and realized we had a C-17 coming in!

While the -17 was arriving on 22R, this Dash-8 made a "dash" for 22L:

Not sure what the deal was with the shots from North Woodmere - it was sure cold and clear, but looking at my shots, it almost looks like there is some heat haze - puzzling.

Great shots, Moose! I hope the large version of that last pic is good enough to upload. Very unique!

Moose Firestone is the last place you should be at that hour, just go to the Kmart lot. Sun is right behind you and lights up those birds so nicely.

The C-17 is awesome!

Today I was at the club having lunch since we are so dead now after the snow and I had my radio with me, as soon as I heard them switch from the 22s to the 31s I bolted for some quick shooting. I shot that all white 747s freighter at Firestone and then headed to Inwood on a lark to see if maybe some special Delta would come. After I got there the all white Austrian came in and then I sat in the car and listened to Delta after Delta go by but then the greatest sight came through the trees. The Pink Delta. I ran to the water and snapped a shot I have wanted (since me and Jakub have screwed it up more than once)

Was suprised that I was alone, the afternoon sun was perfect.

i was wondering where you took the shots of the singapore 744 and the c-17 because i was alone at the mounds when it came over. very nice catch with the dash-8. i was about to shoot the dash-8 when i heard this roar over my shoulder and i turned around for the pleasant surprise.

I was at North Woodmere Park for the Singapore and C-17 shots. If you look on the Spotting Maps link on the NYCA home page, it is point F on the JFK map. That is a much better spot for 22 arrivals earlier in the day. The Mounds will be backlit in the morning/early afternoon.
