South Korea's Asiana Airlines said on Thursday it was buying three passenger planes and leasing another five jets this year to meet rising demand for overseas travel.

Asiana said it had ordered three planes from Airbus and Boeing for delivery this year and would lease three Airbus planes from undisclosed contractors.

Asiana is considering leasing two more Airbus planes this year, an Asiana spokeswoman said, declining to say from whom it would lease them.

Of the three jets Asiana had signed to purchase, Boeing had received orders for two B777-200ERs and Airbus for an A330-300, according to the spokeswoman.
