I have a first class medical and honestly its a joke. The only thing that they arepretty strict on is the 20/20 vision - corrected or naturally. Other than that if you can live about a normal life than you can get a first class medical....

However, now that I think about it you dont need a first class for a PPL - I forget if you need a 2nd or a 3rd class but they are not hard to get at all! Good luck!

I've been tabbing and highlighting a buttload of stuff in the FAR/AIM over the past few days, so let's put this baby to use. :)

Here it is, straight from the horse's mouth:

FAR 61.23
(3) Must hold at least a third-class medical certificate -
(i) When exercising the privileges of a private pilot certificate;

And about third-class medicals...

FAR Part 67, Subpart D
See http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=ab62fda9c44bdea81918af9fdca9a8f4&rgn=div6&view=text&node=14:2.0.1.1.5.4&idno=14

Unless you're Captain Hook or Helen Keller, the medicals are a piece of cake. I would just go straight for a First class, since you're going to need it eventually. And heck, it'd be nice to know what you will and will not be able to achieve before you spend your life savings on lessons.

I had to get a third-class medical this summer to fly (weird situation involving a military flying program with civilian IPs and "leased" planes), but like it has been said above, it was about the easiest physical I've ever taken. Nothing at all like the military series of physical exams to determine rated qualification...

Yeah, the medicals are a joke they make it seem like your going to be running on a treadmill all day with sensors and monitors strapped to your chest but in reality it's just like the vision and hearing test after a annual physical.

It is no big deal really...... I mean unless you manage to fail one at least.
