I have been stuck on this method of photography for the last week and I
am learning so much so fast. I do not think I will ever take night shots
without this method. I am amazed at the results and inspired to go out
an just shoot anything.
The other night I went to the airport and did a few maximum exposure brackets with my camera

I use AEB in the menu's and set it to take 3 shots...
1st shot at 0 exposure comp
2nd shot at -2 exposure comp
3rd shot at +2 exposure comp

With these 3 images I can put together a HDR (High Dynamic Range)
photo that will let me read the tire maker off the black tires of an aircraft
yet not have any part of the shot overexposed. It is AMAZING to just
take some shots around the house..... Here is a good example of a shot
that is not possible without the HDR (or massive grain with photoshop).
Keep the detail in the dark areas but do not overexpose the flame badly...

How do you put them together?
I use a program called Photomatrix but there is sofware in the newer
Photoshop CS2. Normally, the photos look like ass because it is a high
dynamic range which means your little histogram feels like it is now 3
times the size it was with almost no chance of having any pixels blown out
or underexposed. You have incredible detail and the ability to alter the
photo to make it really pop but in any way you like.

Here is a edited HDR shot from the other night....I left it big so you can
see all the details....
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/nycaviation/HDR/IMG_1896_4_5cropped.jpg

If I was going to use the shot, I would have altered it for more contrast.

Not necessarily. It brings out a whole new array of detail and color and you are able to (besides make very low lit shots work) really pull more out of a snapshot. In essence, you take an otherwise boring shot and bring a very spectacular life to it. Check out this guy's work. It's absolutely stunning. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kros

So when shooting against a backlit sky, is it better for me to play with HDR or just take a regular shot and play around with EV?
Also is HDR only best for night time shots/low light shots or does it fair pretty well during the day time?

So when shooting against a backlit sky, is it better for me to play with HDR or just take a regular shot and play around with EV?

You can put any shot you like, day or night, into HDR. It's all about what you envision for what you're shooting. The Poughkeepsie shot, I had dreamed of for months with the intent of using HDR. If you're shooting RAW, play with the EV first. To create an HDR image, you need at least 2 or 3 shots (or copies) of the same image with different exposure then merging them together. If you're using 3 shots, for example, one shot would be under exposed, one over exposed and one properly exposed. Then you merge them and play with luminosity, color and light saturation, and smoothness values to achieve the finished image to your liking.

wunaladreamin
2007-08-11, 10:24 PM
There also really is no set workflow to the actual rendering of your shot as every image will be different and therefore the steps to your finished product will change from shot to shot. And every shot presents a new opportunity to learn and experiment . It's far from editing your aviation shots. The beautiful thing about HDR is that the finished product doesn't have to be perfect from a purist's photography standpoint to be truly artistic and also be appreciated as such.

Anytime. Remember, HDR is not necessarily about making a picture come out oober perfect. It's about how artistic can one get. Pm me if you have anymore questions. :D

I am sorry to correct you but this statement is 180 degrees from the truth
HDR is all about getting the image Oober perfect, it allows you to capture all the data with no black and no white, all values that can be altered. It will make an image with a high dynamic range and low contrast.

Proccessing the HDR to make it artsy is the second step called tone mapping, and this will allow you to make the image fall to a low contrast black and white or so much tone mapping and color that it can look like a cartoon. The tone mapping is what most people think HDR is but it simply is not true. HDR is High Dynamic Range shot.... Think of it as a massive histogram and the image has LOTS MORE DATA.

I hope this helps

I use photomatix

Here are some examples

Inside an aircraft you can not expose as it is too dark.... then HDR come
into play
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HDR/727-6-12-07e.jpg

With just the camera, you can not expose dark christmas tree needles and a
light...the light would be completly overexposed...here you can see the
glass! I could have went further but did not want the overprocessed tone
mapping look
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HDR/9from_IMG_0049.jpg

The moon was way to bright here and I needed to hold the moonlight black...Processed way to far in tone mapping give it a cartoonish look, I like it still
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HDR/IMG_3749_7_8.jpg

Holding back you can see the posibilites....similar to dodge and burn on PS, the clouds look alive.... This was only HDR and tone mapping
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HDR/IMG_7384_2_3.jpg

When the light does not work for you....carry your own or post process....hdr gives you LOTS of info to process!!!!
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HDR/IMG_9451_49_50.jpg

You can also to make reflections pop, check out the nose
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HDR/IMG_9627_5_6.jpg

http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HDR/IMG_9741_39_40.jpg

Well, that is just a few and they do not come close to showing what is possible. Since HDR I have been shooting into the sun with a smile and one burnt eyeball......Hope that is just me!

A question about the shots involving people; obviously it is not possible to take multiple pictures at different exposures because the people will move around. How do you go about those ones? Play with the exposures in Photoshop, create copies then combine? Would it be better if those shots were in RAW to get the exposures right?

Derf
2007-08-12, 01:44 PM
I really do not have much to say as you answered your own questions correctly....

the girl shot was 3 Jpegs, I have in the past use 1 jpeg and while grainy
after making one dark and one light, you are able to tone map, but it is not
really an HDR. If you use RAW, you can get +2 stops and -2 stops with no
problem at all. Lots of people do 1 shot raw HDR's. For late night I usually
do many shots...... like 7 or 9 shot HDR's using JPEG. With those, I take
shots that people say are not possible. I just do it to see the look on their
face when they do see it!

With an aircraft that is moving, 1 shot will usually capture all the data I
need, then I can separate and HDR. I have used all three methods (even if
splitting a JPG is not really HDR). I use all three methods, different method
for the type of shot.

You got it so far from what you said...NOW IT IS TIME TO PLAY!

Beware of over and underexposed areas....HDR you NEED all the data.
1 shot HDR from 1 JPG that there was slight over exposed and the plane was
very dark! Looks good the the sky is good for nothing!!!

I like the shot but it seems a bit dark. I notice that many of the night shots you have been doing are a bit dark. If it is your style, thats cool...but if you are just doing the same thing I did, this may help.

1. When you are taking a picture at night and it has any lights showing, you will need to overexpose the shot, the camera can not meter at night while looking into a light and will almost always underexpose (execptions only due to massive lighting where it' is not really a night shot)

2. Never use your LCD at night to "TELL YOU" if you got the shot, your eyes are completly f'in usless as you are looking into a bright picture with fully dialated eyes. I screwed up so many pictures early in night shots becuause it looked good. I still from time to time really muff it up!

If that shot were lighter, I could see that sky about 2 stops brighter...
Ahhhh....wait, Let me photoshop yours really quick so you can see it pop.....

Generally, I like my night shots to be more on the dark side. But there are many that I think are very underexposed, leaving interesting details hidden. Thanks for the advice, I still have plenty of experimentation to conduct in the future!

Don't worry, HDRs of the trains are coming. The last few trips have been merely scouting missions, but now that I know what shots I want (and which trains don't contain hobos), I can zero in and eliminate my targets. The DC-8 was in the main museum gallery, right behind the F-9 Couger.

45 shots...9 panels, each of which is a 5-shot HDR.

It got cloudy while I was taking the shot...you can tell which panel I did before the clouds rolled in :) I'll try it again when the weather gets better and I'm not so busy...

I was shooting from Frank Sinatra Drive (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Frank%20Sinatra%20Dr%2C%20Hoboken%2C%20NJ). It's right on the river, parking wasn't bad, and it's a great view. It's directly across from the mid-teens in Manhattan. They have a fishing pier out into the river that gives you a view from the George Washington Bridge all the way down to the VZ Bridge.

Very nice, but you need extreme LIGHT and Dark...Point the camera into the sun and let at it....the show us some of those....If you can take a picture and not under or over expose...there is not much use in the HDR. You did this right, but you will learn much more if you go extreme!!!!

Lights at night are difficult....here was my attempt at some newer ones
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/397438081_zKzvr-L-1.jpg

This is an HDR when not needed
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/378750526_QZCxr-L-1.jpg
(I am also king of those usless shots!)

Then a non HDR...

Too HDR or not to HDR.....

Ditto on the "going to the extreme" mantra. If there is a good mix of dark shadows and bright lights, then its probably begging for an HDR. Sunrise and sunset have been the best times for my shots, since you get the most interesting lighting.

Hey Derf, I did it the right way where I took 6 different exposures from very under exposed to
over exposed.......This day was a very overcast......This is why you really don't see that
much shadow, but you do see alot of detail that I did not get on the regular picture......

And I did go to the extreme my friend.....

Eric

I did not mean to offend, I am not talking about how you did the different exposures and putting it thru the filters and
what..... I was talking about the conditions in which the picture was taken itself.

I am in no way knocking how you processed it, only wanted to say that this type of picture does not fit the need for HDR
as far as I see. THERE ARE MANY OTHERS and I have done many that should not really use HDR as far as the dynamic
range is concerned. I am not trying to beat your shot up, but I will try to explain better were I was going with it.

In overcast conditions there is rarely a need for HDR unless you are trying to make clouds pop but that is only if they have
definition and also if you are looking for a reflection. In the below picture I show both for an example
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/293432488_sRHzx-L-2.jpg

But the real reason for an HDR is this
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/406407168_aeGLy-L-1.jpg
Where there would be over or under exposure or both. HDR gathers all the info that can be had so you can make a shot
with little to no data out of range of the sensor.

If you look at the histogram of properly exposed shot you took of the boat, it will be within range and completely
photoshopable.... HDR will help with lowering noise and help with editing if extreme processing is wanted by the editor.

LIKE EVERY RULE IN PHOTOGRAPY..... EVERY RULE MUST BE BROKEN ....ie, to not take pictures into the sun if you want
foreground info, HDR lets us break that rule much more often then otherwise would be done...but it still can be done without
an HDR as shown below with this non HDR (But there is massive overexposure AND underexposure)
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/42106415_wgC45-L-3.jpg
If this was HDR, You should see less overexposure and more definition of the sun as well as greener trees (instead of black).

There have been times that I used HDR IMPROPERLY for a look of bringing out the dark areas or just because of the low
contrast look. Like I said, EVERY RULE in photography MUST BE BROKEN to get better. BREAK MY RULES AS WELL!!!! but
understand what I am saying as I process more HDR's then the next 50 guys. PROVE ME WRONG as I have those who
taught me, and that is what will make other people look.

Here are just a few that I SHOULD NOT have used HDR but did.
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/280409349_oAPDx-L-1.jpg

http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/280405857_88goN-L-1.jpg

This would have been a black statue and a white background due to the back-lighting, HDR made this the only way It would
not be a silhouette or the sky would have been white if the statue looked any kind of green
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/153294192_NVM4H-L-3.jpg

In closing, I just wanted to see pictures like this
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/161335035_DhSwU-M-2.jpg
turn into this
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/168906719_srEtD-L-2.jpg

I hope I am wrong as I would learn more about something I think I have a pretty good grasp on. Thousands of HDR's later
and I have not stopped learning. Never take anything that anyone says as law, just learn from it. Play with extreme and
use what you have learned to show us more....

the only reason I replied back to your post and not others was you said it was your FIRST hdr.... I have no problem as my
firsts were not as good as that, but I have learned since the first and I just wanted you to turn into the sun with the
camera and have more fun that you have been having. Kenny on this forum has had way less experience on his HDR's than
me, and I think his shots are over process and over saturated....YET I and EVERYONE ELSE LOVES THEM. John has been using it allot and Love his work as well. You do what you want your way, but play....ITS ALL GOOD and I was just trying to give you come criticism.... I wish I would have worded it better, I am good at photography (debatable) but not the
English language (not debatable).

I look forward to you showing us more....please post many more for us :)

It looks like the first shot has the Light Smoothing slider all the way to the left or close to it.... This usually gives Halo's and a
soft appearance, push the slider all the way to the right and it will do little to no editing, I usually use it one or two clicks
from the right unless I want to go apesh!t. Your last two images look alot sharper, but it really depends on what you are
trying to do. I usually find that when I am processing with a really bad lighting, Less color saturation will help.

Original / Less satuation

http://derf.smugmug.com/photos/427970292_rrJyn-O-2.jpg
Above image I raised the Dark end of Levels about 5% to make the black, blacker (IE, more contrast Less HDR)
The image does not look as much like what most peolple think an HDR is but there is tons of detail left in the white aircraft
itself. I think that all three shots are a good expample of HDR and that view is wild. As you can see my change was
MINOR at best but that is just how I would process. I love the over saturation but not with that lighing at the airport. I
wish they had good lights! With almost everything else, I like to oversaturate a bit.

I look foward to seeing how WILD and tame you can get new images. The best thing to remember is go way out of bounds
in different ways.... Your at a much better start than I was this early. :borat: Excellent!

It is a lot of fun to watch others attempts, Everytime John posts, I want to run out to his spot!....Don't get me wrong,
yours isn't bad either.... Nudge Nudge

You throw a good zoom and let a few HDR cook on some aircraft sitting at the gate with all the lights on and we are going
to have some words my friend.... Especially if you bring that down to f16 or so!!!! NURSE..... My MEDS!!!!

That first shot is eye candy extreeeeme! Setting sun, Gradient in the sky that it shows, the pinks on the right and perfect exposure. It looks like it is not level tho but nothing a little post processing can not handle. Great Capture.

The second shot lacks the punch of the first shot, the mid levels look a little bland, this shot may be much better as a non hdr (Please do not tell anyone I said that!)

Your certainly blessed with a great eye

Fred-

Are all those shots he posted HDR or are they even all supposed to be? It seems like a lot of them may just be single exposure tone-mappers (especially the ones with people since they would create ghosting in the image). In any event, great find! I'd love to get a copy of that program he uses, seems pretty dang powerful.

It look like he is doing a 1 shot RAW and then converting it. He uses Photomatix like I do and he goes into how he processes it. With photomatix and practice, it is easy to get his results but hard to get his consistency.

It helps that the link below shows his entire workflow so you can do the same thing....Woops, was I not suppose
to say that? :borat:

Two new ones

One processed just enough to make it still look like a photo:

One over the top processed, but I think it works in this case...and the "ghosted" people make the picture dynamic, not static.

I like the second Pilatus shot better...first one is too saturated, and there is a lot of CA on all the white edges (paper on yoke, in the dash holder, etc). The first one also looks a tab blurry on the pilot's CB panel. The second one is a lot sharper and the colors look much better.

Ditto on the "going to the extreme" mantra. If there is a good mix of dark shadows and bright lights, then its probably begging for an HDR. Sunrise and sunset have been the best times for my shots, since you get the most interesting lighting.

VERY cool thread. I'm new on the site, and have been very inspired by the photos and images posted here. Though I'm a well-seasoned Photoshop user (almost 20 yrs with it), I had never looked into trying HDR before. So I've done some research on it - both here, and elsewhere.

-------
Disclaimer: I've always been a point and shoot kind of photographer (I'm a pro graphic artist, not photographer), but I'm starting to make my way around the "manual" settings much more. So please excuse my lack of technical knowledge on the camera end of the project. Exposure, Aperture, ISO, F-stop, Bus stops... Agggghhh!
-------

So far, my initial tests have - not surprisingly - been underwhelming, to say the least. When I tried to do a quick experiment, I shot 3 exposures and used the Merge to HDR function in photoshop. The resulting image looked not a lot different than the "standard" exposure shot. What the heck is wrong?

Then I decided to use my photoshop layering knowledge to "fake" an HDR - using Adjustments and layer masking. Here, I got decent results. But I was hoping to use the HDR stuff directly.

The other thing I've tried is the Tone Mapping filter (Photomatix) as I think the surreal image "look" is VERY intriguing! This, too, was very disappointing! I had a GREAT looking preview shot and accepted the settings. When it finished processing, the final image looked horrible!!! Not only was it a lousy conversion, it bared no resemblance to the image in the Preview window! Uggghhh!!

Can anyone please give me some basic pointers to get me on the right track? Thanks in advance...
