Great pics, was the NW DC-9 the only T tail plane to lift up?

What causes this Dc-9 to tilt up like that VS. other planes? Heck, what causes it to tilt up in the first place? Was there any damage to it?

weight on the engine pylons and hoizontal stab vetical stab fuse etc etc... from the snow that is builtup it just sits there it does not have much place to go or slide down the fuse. like the forward airplane probably is the reason. Or maybe another attempt for insurance claims on nwa's part (ducks)

hmm....that's odd because when i worked at FRG they plowed the snow away once it was noticably on the ground, a little silly....but thats how we, and op's did it...but then again, every place is different.

Yeah, I'm surprised how messed up BUF looks...I would expect them to be on top of it considering they get at least a foot of snow per week during the winter. In fairness, they've never gotten two feet in the middle of October before, so maybe they just weren't ready.

How much damage will something like that cause?

it depends i doubt it caused any really major damage actually it may have gradually went over or it just suddenly went "PLUNK!"

The DC9 is a notoriously tail heavy airplane when empty or lightly loaded.Add some wet ( very heavy) snow and maybe some well placed gusts of wind and back you go . Similar to the 727-200, except the 72 had the ventral stairs to hold her up . at USAirways when we had them , if you were ferrying it someplace empty , we had to load ballast in the forward belly , we kept sandbags for that purpose.

on an intresting notefor the 717 and i wouldassume the dc9 as well you actually wantto get the tail as heavy as you can always when possible. now in the bin the max was 60 bags to fit in there . anything less than 14 pax though and you put everything up front to balance it all out. there are a few reasons for that which we can safe for pm questions

BUF was a fun nightagain last night. Total mess. On another note for the last week or so there has been a DC-9-30 sitting on the ramp hard standed undegoing some sort of MX work. It is not the one that tipped but the focus was on the tail. Last night we had 3 Dash-8's a Saab a few Embraers and a bus sitting around all waiting for Edicts to go. Jet Blue was in pretty bad shape and United was a total mess. WN was the only one really doing much last night at all but we kept getting crew from all the other airlines trying to get out to LGA. We actually had seats available but some of the birds were not getting roll times till about 1 A.M. I got lucky and got into LGA at 1030 or so. CRAZY BUF ! Plus we had a thunderstorm take power out twice. The runways lights went out the second time just as a WN 737 was roaring up out of there. It was kind of cool. I was just peakin out the window as she climbed out and all the sudden total blackness.
