Very nice, I love the Continental 767-400 shot.

For a first timer I have to say you have some good motive there. Be mindful of the light and try to shoot with the light behind you on the subject for maximum results.

what about trying to take shots with the sun in the background like that? I've seen some really cool pictures like that. any tricks to do so? thanks

That works, I'd say though you want to have the subject closer to you. The last one is a good example, if the plane was closer or you could zoom in more it would appear more silhouette, something like the shot below. What settings did you have your camera on? When shooting into the sun like that I generally do is lower my exposure compensation so everything in the shot is black.

Well thats prob. half my problem. I have a digital rebel and have yet to really learn how to use all the settings. I've read the book that came with it on several occasions but never really tried to take pictures using all of the modes. Today I used the flash off auto shooting mode.

I had/have the Digital Rebel. Generally when we shoot in sunny weather we use AV mode F8 to F9. On that camera I took the espouse compensation down a notch in bright sunny weather. If you come spotting one day I can show you the best settings for the Rebel. Its a great camera, most of my shots over the last year were taken with it.
