View Full Version : La Guardia Kids Day!! September 30

PhilDernerJr
2006-09-01, 03:54 PM
What I feel is the best yearly aviation event in the area, Saturday, September 30th, is the day where we all get to enjoy LGA up close.

Though times are not definite, it is usually from 12-4pm.

The event is organized by Kiwanis Club for children to get to enjoy the various attractiosn up close ont he tarmac at the Marine Air Terminal.

Open to the public, airliners usually from American, US Airways and Delta Shuttle are on hand to board, meet employees and maybe take in a soda, courtesy of the crew.

Fighter jets usually make an appearance, this year so far are promising a pair of A-10s to come!

There are usually dispplays by the New York Skytypers, the Port Authority rescue trucks, and the Department of Corrections. Appearances by NYPD and PAPD helicopters and more are also common.

You enter through a gate that's a few hundred feet south from the MAT. Food and refreshments are free of charge as well.

Last year we had close to thirty members appear, and I hope many of you come and bring whoever you'd like as well.

Photography is allowed and URGED!! :)

Is this the sort of thing that I'd feel out of place going to if I weren't bringing a kid with me, or are there a fair number of other people doing that too?

The crowds are large and it's certainly not just for kids.

how many planes etc do they have like what exactly all is involved events wise

PhilDernerJr
2006-09-01, 04:41 PM
Each airline usually brings out one aircraft, plus the 4 or 5 Skytyper TExans, the fighter jets and helicopters.

Last year, US Airways borught out an A319 in Star Alliance colors, Delta brought out a 733, and American brought out an MD-80.

In the words of hiss_srq, "I'm all over that!"

I've been wanting to go to kid's day at LGA for two years now. I booked a flight in 2004 to go up there but thanks to a hurricane that year moving up into the northeast after dealing with us in Florida, Kid's day was cancelled. Shame. Thank goodness I was able to change my ticket. Last year I didn't bother because I was afraid of weather again. This year, I have these beautiful benefits from Delta. I am definately going to try to get up to NYC the 30th. Maybe a one day MCO-LGA-MCO trip on the 30th. Anyone willing to pick me up at the DL terminal and give me a ride? Or is it accessible from the marine terminal? I could take the bus over to the marine terminal if the entrance is over by there. Hope to see you all there on the 30th!

Ditto man!

I just looked up flights from MCO. The only thing that sucks is my only nonstop return option is 3pm departure from LGA. That isn't going to work so I'm thinkin of trying TPA-LGA-TPA because I can get into LGA by 10am and get out of LGA at 8pm with decent loads. Only thing that sucks about that is driving 1.5 hrs each way Home-TPA-Home. But oh well. It'd be worth it.

Hope to see you all on the 30th!

I just heard the news that the A-10s had to be deployed to Iraq, so they will not be there. :(

It sounds like the same goes for most of the military participants, so the event will probably be dominated by airlines.

I am definitely in! Looking forward to meeting some of the group finally!

Can someone just refresh my memory as to parking, meeting time, etc? And is there parking by the MAT or is it better to park at the Central Terminal and bus over to the MAT?

I'm totally pumped for this! :D

PhilDernerJr
2006-09-26, 05:58 PM
As for parking, in past years, we've parked near Planeview Park and walked over.

But there is a parking lot near the MAT for Hangar 7 that they usually let you park in for free. There should be many signs around theref ro the event to direct you.

The event starts at 12:00, so just walk on in. I will probably be wearing a collared shirt and my known dark blue Polo hat. Many of us should be easy to spot.

I'll probably just head over to the main terminal and grab a bite to eat until the thing starts. Then head over to the Marine Air Terminal I suppose.

Yeah I agree, AA will probably be a mad dog, Delta could be just about anything, but the real kicker would be one of the US A319's in a heritage scheme!

Would suck if Delta put out a Mad Dog, too. Maybe they can spare an E170 for a few hours, that'd be nice.

A US heritage scheme would be awesome, but last year they had 700UW -- Star Alliance -- and that apparently confused a lot of people. Would be a smart move for them to just send in a new-colored 319, if anything.

I have heard that the odds are in favor of US having a new colors A319.

My personal wish list involves DL bringing Pink Delta, AA bringing the 738 Retrojet, and US bringing the real America West retrojet! :) (OK...back to reality now...)

AFAIK, the new color 737s are all US West and thus won't be out in our neck of the woods.

I have heard the same about US737's, that they are all US West. It would be nice to see a US East A319, as I've only been on a few US West's in the new colors. I would LOVE to see an E-170, I've been dying to check out the new jungle jets!

PhilDernerJr

US doesn't bring in E-jets to LGA anymore.

As for a heritage scheme, it's unlikely, as last year we had a Star Alliance, and non-airline folks didn't know what it was a US Airways plane.

I think the reference may have been to the Delta E-170s, which Brian had mentioned earlier in the thread.

I would LOVE to see an E-170

Even if Delta doesn't formally bring an E-170 to Kids Day, the event is right near the MAT, which is where the E-170s park for the ORD flights. We may very well see a few of those planes taxiing by during the event.
