JAL B747 fly with engines placed on the wrong side
Thursday, January 05, 2006

A regular maintenance check-up of Japan Airlines in November discovered that a Boeing jumbo jet had been flying for seven months with one of the engines of JAL B747 being placed on the wrong side.

Currently, engines are required to be inspected once every 650 flights but one of the engines this time had completed about 850 flights without being examined.

As a result of the mistake, air would have been flowing toward the fuselage instead of away from it during reverse thrust.

Airline officials confirmed that there were no safety problems during flights. The Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry however have instructed the airline to take measures to prevent any recurrence.

JAL will now revise in-house procedures to ensure that inspections on the planes are conducted after outsourced maintenance work by ST Aviation Services Co Pty Ltd in Singapore.
